2462.

Proposed new topic: Statisticians of the 1800s. Discuss.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

-Steen Eiler Rasmussen, 1898-1990 (SimCity 2000 User Manual).

Not all of them take Walter Breuning for example, looking good for a 114 year old.

And there are still people even older then him.

2467 - Well he was born in the 19th century...but he probably wasn't a statistician in the 1800s.

Someday I want to go to a party where music isn't being blasted ridiculously loud, so people can actually hear each other talk without shouting at the top of their lungs.

Don't get me wrong, I don't blanketly hate loud music (and indeed, there is some stuff that it's just wrong to not blast)... but I only enjoy that when I'm by myself. When there are other people around, loud music is distracting and interferes with your ability to have a proper conversation.

And it's not just parties, it's in the car, too. People drive around blasting whatever and then yell and scream so other people can hear them. This is a particularly annoying behavior that just makes no freaking sense. There is no need to yell, how about you turn the damn music down (or better yet, off) instead? Not "exciting" enough that way? Relax, not everything needs to be "exciting".

It also doesn't help that the way people listen to music has become very... ADDish (hell, society seems to have collectively gotten ADD in general. Everyone's all over the place, nobody knows how to focus anymore). Let's listen to this one song by this artist, then let's go listen to this other song by this other artist, then let's go listen to this- no, let's listen to that- no, how about- no, ah here we go *30 seconds pass* nah, let's listen to this instead, etc., etc.

I fully blame iPods for this. The ability to just skip around like crazy has robbed people of their attention span and their ability to be coherent. In the old days, if you wanted to switch to a different artist, you had to go through the bother of changing the CD. But now you just push a couple buttons and whatever you want comes on. I find it all quite jarring and aggravating, being rapidly pulled all over the place with no aim or direction like that. In order to actually enjoy listening to music, I need consistency. This means that when I have an album, I am going to listen to the whole album, from start to finish. If I do not have time to listen to the whole album, I will not listen to any of it. Listening to this then that then that in no particular order is usually not enjoyable, nor is listening to just a few songs without listening to them all. I mean, think about it. Would you sit down and read just one chapter in the middle of a book? Would you sit down and just watch a five minute clip of a movie? No? Okay, then why do you sit down and listen to just a song or two off an album? At the very least, when you put on a song, let the song finish - don't cut it off in the middle and change it. That's a thousand times worse.

    Okay, end rant.

How so? What is the purpose of getting together with people, if not to interact with them?

Point of inconvenience: all the userIDs changed, and now the URLs for profiles aren't so easily manipulatable as they contain the username, not just the ID#. Same goes for topic URLs, you need to know the thread title. Sooo many old links I had lying around that now no longer work and can't easily be converted... :boggle:
