In Japan, cars are similar to Duke's European car picture above. My current golf cart shows km/h and... Well, that's it because it's a stupid little thing with no options on it. The gas is doled out in liters from the gas stations, but my car doesn't show how many liters it's carrying.

*bonus: if comments were feet, we have just eclipsed one mile.

I have seen no button to change it to miles, and can think of no reason why such an option would exist in a country that uses metric and is completely surrounded by water, beyond which is other countries that use metric. In fact, the only three countries that would have a need for a "miles" setting are Burma, Liberia, and the USA. Every other country in the world uses metric.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Also the UK. They're gradually accepting metric but they still use miles and mph on their roads.

And it would make sense for countries adjacent to mile users to have the option (speedometers primarily in kph and secondarily in mph may be found in Canada and Ireland)

There was a plan to change all the signs over to metric, but it would have to be done all at once and there are 2 million signs to change. It was dropped on account of cost.

The mile, yard, foot, inch, pint, and troy ounce are the only imperial units permitted to be used in the economic, public health and safety, and administrative sectors, and they are legally defined in terms of metric units. The only goods not permitted to be sold in metric units alone are draught beer and cider, which must be sold in either 1/3 pint or multiples of 1/2 pint.

The UK has this problem because their speed limit signs use exactly the same design as the rest of the speed limt signs in the world outside of North America, just in mph rather than kph. So, yeah, unless they wanted to come up with a new design, they would have to change all the signs at once and be sure to remind people of the change constantly.

In the US, it's interesting. The 2003 MUTCD started listing dimensions and whatnot primarily in meters or milimeters and secondarily in feet and inches, and also included provisions for metric signage:

2003mutcdspeedlimits.png

With these separate standards, one could reasonably switch gradually (start posting both, then start removing the mph versions). But, in the 2009 MUTCD, they went back to just using feet and inches and dropped all the metric signage standards. Why? Because the engineering community accepted the metric halfheartedly at best and the state and municipal governments didn't accept it at all. I know of no metric speed limit signs like the one depicted that were actually made and put up anywhere.

Yeah, sometimes when I get on after I wake up we're on the next page, and then when I'm online before I go to bed (like now) we've hit another new one. Oh well. I really didn't feel I had anything to add to the whole km/mi speedo thing.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

We seem to have lost an entire page somewhere.

EDIT: Yeah, it seems precisely 30 separate posts have gone missing, rather than a full page just dropping out.
