I think you are missing the point. A BAT thread is created to show off work, ask for advice with the hope of improving..that is essentially why people create BAT threads. As a rule, people that create BAT threads, that want advice generally improve from BAT to BAT.

If you aren't interested in gaining knowledge and advice then by all means, create BATS, upload them and that is that...people will comment etc etc.

But because progress is shown here, we are then under the impression that he is seeking advice..note ADVICE, not demands on how to improve. That advice is offered freely, so it becomes a 2 way thing.

With that said, i don't really understand where you are coming from.

Let me start off by saying that On001222 could improve his BATs; certainly there's room for improvement. The night lights and modeling are superb, but the textures could use a considerable amount of work. Still, that's 2/3 of the big three taken care of.

The BAT is quite an intimidating program, which is to be expected, because it calls upon most--if not all--of the same discipline, time management, and visual & spacial skills/intilligence as architecture/the building arts/interior design does. It's not something you can just pick up like riding a bicycle. There are people who are extraordinary at it almost immediately, those who are slow learners but could certainly become very good at it, and those who simply hit a 'talent ceiling'. I hope that doesn't sound degrading, and I'm not saying On001222 is attempting something 'out of his league'; all I'm saying is that the BAT is not for everybody.

Additionally, one of the wisest things I've ever heard is this: practice doesn't make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect.

I do understand tcxalapa's point as well though. There are some BATers who are absolute perfectionists about their work, and a few of them have admitted to getting caught in a loop of never finishing/uploading their projects. There are other BATers who are extremely proficient, and care just as much about the 'fans' and sharing their work with them on the STEX as they do about the quality of their uploads. I think that there's not necessarily a healthier one among the two I just described. Whatever suits your fancy; remember folks, it's only a game.

Art is art and is never truly finished, there will always be something that at least one person doesn't like about it, but it's to be expected. It's true that the purpose of this particular section of the site is supposed to be for the critiquing of and improving of work, as much as it is meant to be a project showcase. But I also understand the disheartening feeling of a wonderful creation never seeing the light of day, even if it was done. I don't think I can even name all of the BATs that were shown with in-game renders, and still never made it onto the STEX.

The best we can do, here, is grace all of the modelers with our good intentions; either our words of praise, our words of criticism, or a bit of both. And we can only hope that the creators will be willing to bring the quality of their work up to a widely accepted release tier; or simply just release something that absolutely blows our socks off.

Ok I understand your point of view and I think is as valid as mine. I get upset when I read replies that say: You NEED to change this or that, like is an order, or STOP uploading until you get better.

I think I'll have to stop taking some comments seriously and move on.

Anyway. Is just a game, and everyone is free to play it the way they want.

Saludos!!

I just have to add that I tend to support more Gutterclub's point of view, however, I also agree with Yoshii about never releasing things (I think I could be included in that list). Nonetheless, this analysis should be done in case by case basis, On001222 releases stuff quite frequently so I don't see him doing something and never releasing, he also seems to understand and enjoy modelling so the natural thing is to try to help him improve, a there is no point at staying at the same level. I truly believe that there is nothing more valuable that having people encouraging to get better at whatever is that you do. Furthermore, his models look quite good, however, sometimes have scale issues and always lack of quality textures. Scaling issues could be easily avoided when planing ahead and won't make modelling more difficult, it would take and extra hour or so, and it could even save time while modelling. Texturing does requires extra effort, however, I prefer one good BAT than three mediocre ones. To me is like designing and constructing a Ferrari and then have it paint by toddlers using acrylic paint. I am sure some people will say ok it is an excellent design so I don't mind the exterior paint, however, I am sure a great majority of the people will avoid it because of bad paint-job.

And about hitting a "talent ceiling", well how would we know if he doesn't even try?

Shame about the language barrier... :( I fear half of the talk in this thread is beyond On001222's grasp of the English language, and nobody of us even speaks Thai at all. It's often hard enough to point out things if both parties are rather proficient in the language that's used to discuss, but when language difficulties are added, the situation can become really frustrating. You're sitting there and thinking "Oh my gosh, this guy is great, he's so talented! With some advice and feedback, he could create amazing things. He clearly doesn't lack the talent, he just needs some input." But you just don't get the message across. :|

I know exactly what you mean, and I completely agree with you here. It's why I refrained from really critiquing his BATs at all. We could give him the most valuable modeling tutorial in the world, but it'd be useless to this user if it was entirely in English, hey?

I've seen quite a bit of foreign sites; in Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and Korean, and they all seem to have a uniform quality standard, with a few exceptions to the rule. Some of those BATs come out very well, while others are in the same boat as here: great modeling, poor textures. The problem is, there aren't as many people with the same expertise as the English speaking SimCity 4 users, who speak their language. And they might not be granted the same access to all the wonderful tutorials and things on here in their own tongue. It's not that they don't have the potential to be great, it's that nobody can teach them in a language they'll understand.
