***Warning: This is a high graphics journal, and may load slow for dial up users.***

Hello and welcome to my newest journal, Newark. Newark has been in the works for a few weeks now, and while there is a good years worth of work ahead before I can call this project complete, I think it is now far enough along to start a city journal on it.

Most of you are probably familiar with my last journal, Klondike Delta, and those who aren't can check it out by following the link in my signature. It was a great journal, and had well over 20 pages, a huge accomplishment for me considering that its journal was started January of this year. I hope that this next journal will last even longer and get even farther, but only time will tell.

I am using a new map by the very talented mapmaker flamesrock, who was kind enough to send me a copy of the new version of the map I was originally going to do this journal on, and I have to say that the second version is mind-blowing. It utilizes the Terrain Edit modd, which allows mountain ranges to be taller and more beautiful than what was originally possible with the Maxis terrain parameters. This map is massive, and features towering snowy mountain ranges, lowland plains, marshes, a beautiful cliff face, beaches, a massive river with large islands, and a bay.

With this large map, I am going to try to create my own mini nation, which means that this won't just be a look at the pretty pictures journal, but will also cover my nation

I see a very interesting dual freeway setup from up here. 10.gif

EDIT: One more thing, upon reflection. I see way too many Sun Bank buildings. Those things are weeds and don't look right in most mid density places (I have a few problems with them too) so perhaps get rid of most of the out-of-place ones.

Oh, wow this is a nice looking city journal, but that downtown looks alot like the one in your last City journal, but I can tell this one is less dense, and it looks great. 1.gif

Amazing, Mayor Tim! The downtown is great, much variety! The harbour is beautiful; what did you do with the embankment to get it this way?

You've made an excellent start! 44.gif

Excellent start to your CJ and a very nice downtown. I especially like your sunken highway - I can never get mine to perfection 8.gif.

Also, I'm glad to have joined with your great cj in the SCJU. It's going to be interesting to see how the SCJU will play into both of our CJs.

Keep up the good work!

    Wohoo Comments! 39.gif<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office />

oroen: Yes, I did spend a lot of time working on my highways, because it always annoyed me a little having only a 6 lane highway going through downtown areas, when most real life cities usually need a highway with 12-28 lanes to accommodate all the traffic. It was never possible before, but now with the GLR Modd I can finally make a functional highway with 12 lanes.  I also know what you mean about all the Sun Bank Buildings, I will demolish most of them soon, I haven't yet though because the city is still in its early growing stages and every job counts.

Cjah: Wow thanks for all the encouragement! I am honored that you put my journal into your sig after only one update, and I will try my best to keep my journal worthy of that link. I have to agree with you, the Japanese boat lots do indeed own. 1.gif

kingofsimcity: Thanks dude! It really means a lot to know you will be following this journal from the beginning! Hope to see you back in here really soon! 2.gif

    Traffic_Jam: Thanks!

DragonAnime: It really means a lot to see you in here, thanks for the support! Yes, this downtown does look much like the downtown seen in my previous journal, mainly because The Chicago Skyline is one of my favorite skylines in the world and both this downtown and the downtown from Klondike Delta were based on it. I did try to make it less dense, and some areas might get even lower densities, but for now, that

hmm you know, it could almost be newark NJ...

You do have the highway positioned where it actually is, Newark NJ is also on a river...maybe in 50 years newark NJ will look like that? I hope maybe please... 1.gif Anyway i go through newark everday and i will pretned to see your city on my way home today!
Could you enlighten us on your higways, maybe some closer screen shots, especialy of that interchange?
    Thanks

Time to take a second, much more in depth look at downtown Newark! I didn't change much today, so I just let it run for a little while and took plenty of pictures to keep you guys interested.

First, here are some close ups of the downtown core.

    p4d2tx.jpg

Picture taken just East of the International trade center. Newark is famous for its skyline, which is one of the tallest in the world due to pro-skyscraper policies by the Chamber of Commerce.

    p5d0af.jpg

Even further east, we hit the geographical center of downtown. No super skyscrapers have been built in this area, and this section of the skyline is mostly dominated by residential skyscrapers. There is a nice park, and an office complex, but this is one of the quietest areas of downtown.

    p7d1zl.jpg

Continuing on our eastward path, we hit the Hotel district. Surprisingly enough, the hotel district is mainly made up of hotels. This is the perfect spot for a hotel - very close to the downtown core but far enough away to avoid the huge land prices of the CBD.

    p8d6vm.jpg

Just behind downtown is the sunken freeway, and in this picture you can see the Semah Tower, the first glass shard type turn of the century building ever built anywhere. It faced fierce opposition from the citizens while it was under construction, though the people of Newark have now grown fond of its bold and airy new design.

    p12d3iw.jpg

Turning directions, this is the area West of the International Trade Center.

    p13d5fa.jpg

Finally, the center of commerce in Newark, here is the Financial District. Made up almost completely of Bank HQs, more money flows through here every week than there is in Fort Nox.

Now that the downtown pictures are out of the way, lets move on to transportation!

    p11t6ma.jpg

This is the interchange where Highway 2 (the sunken highway) branches off from Highway 1 (H 1)

    p12t8pk.jpg

This is currently the largest interchange in Newark. H 1 (Highway 1) and H 12 (Highway 12) meet up here.

    p9t4nq.jpg

Further down H 1 is the bradford Tunnel and where H 2 re-enters Highway 1.

Now, time for some pictures of various places of interest around Newark.

    p18yz.jpg

Doland Station. Doland Station is the largest mass transit hub in the region, with 4 elevated rail lines, 3 monorail lines, 4 rail lines, a bus stop, and a subway stop all in one. A super project of the 70s, it has never really been used enough to justify its construction, and now serves mostly as a cargo and shipping hub. It also includes a mall, and several important buildings like the convention center, city hall, the court house, and the Chamber of Comerce all share its parking lot.

    p28ht.jpg

Some low wealth appartments near H 1.

    p35qv.jpg

Shot showing the City Hall, Court House, Convention Center, and Chamber of Comerce that all share the Doland Station's parking lot.

    p64rz.jpg

The tourist district. Too far away to really be considered a part of downtown, the tourist district is full of resturaunts, gift shops, condos, and clubs. The Board of Transportation also has its hq here.

Phew... well thats the whole update, please leave a comment and tell me what you think! 29.gif

Great start, Tim! I love the downtown core and its high density. The hardest part is always picking which skyscraper best fits in your city, and where.

Now this is a nice big town! Not a forrest of skyscrapes but they just appear where they are should. Great. I love Benigman's warf too, really nice and realistic spot! I also like your traffic systems, highways AND railways (some people do only highways but no or almost no railways 15.gif)

    Great job!

sirgeoj2: Thanks for all the support. Glad you like it!

    jacqulina: Thanks!

Padraig_2: Some nice highway shots are in the next update, and this is not Newark, NJ. I have no clue what that city looks like, so if the highway layout is the same it is just by coincidence.

Jerebannus XVI: Yah, the SCJU really is a great thing. So much potential. Anyway, thanks for all the support, and I hope to see you in here again sometime soon.

zxqv8: Thanks! I put a lot of thought and hard work into my transit system, so it is nice to see that people like it.

Cjah: Thanks! Yah, even I was surprised at how well my transit system worked, the city of 150,000 has an average commute time of 0.6 minutes! And while I know that my skyline is not the tallest on Simtrop, it is the tallest in my nation, and it is just as tall as other realistic cities on simtrop because the International Trade Center is one of the tallest realistic buildings on the STEX.

Cypherus21: Thanks, and I agree with you. Making a downtown that looks natural and realistic is one of the hardest parts of city building.

    jacqulina: Thanks again!

Nardo69: Thanks for all the support!

seltay: The current population is just under 150,000 sims.

    dhoppeii: Thanks!

    newy2: Thank you!

To all: Thanks for looking at my journal, even if you didn't comment. I really appreciate it, and I hope that you continue to look at my thread and maybe even comment once or twice. 1.gif
