Hey guys

First post on these forums, been downloading and browsing through these forums for a number of months now. Finally thought I should introduce myself. So hi! Just want to say there are some cracking cities on this whole site, I am really envious of all of you with the awesome cities. Hopefully I can achieve that in the not to distant future!

Currently building a new airport for my region, which is still to be built also. But anyway, here is a preview of my progress so far after a couple of hours work. It's based on a real world airport, wonder if anybody can guess which airport it is based on!

Some detail of ops at Queen Charlotte International...

One of the 6 remaining B717-200's in service with Phoenix Airlines between a Titan and a Phoenix B738

Titan is the world's second largest operator of the Boeing 747-8i (after Lufthansa) with 18 in service...

Caledonian also operate the B748, using it on long-haul routes to Europe and Asia

Well... +1 Internet to the both of you. Yep - been working on skins for generic aircraft for awhile now. Don't know whether the a350 or 748 will get released as I need permission from he models' authors. No nightlites either since they're beyond my meager skills.

@mike_oxlong : lovely A350 you got there...i'm drooling at it. :O

meanwhile, i present my small CLASS II B Airport*, Misaki Airport (MSK / PVMQ) my fourth airport project.

* - CLASS II B - Aerodromes with secondary regional roles - runway length of at least 1800m - Taliara Civil Aviation Authority Airport Classification

Overview : A small domestic airport with a 2,400m runway with ILS (Localizer + Glideslope), a terminal with 3 aerobridges (5 aircraft gates), turnaround pads (the airport is not that busy anyway, realistically saves costs as well), a control tower, general aviation hangars, its a nice little airport serving this tiny rural municipality. Its one of my favorite airports to build too. :}

Thanks! I really hope I can get permission to release the a350 and 748 (crediting the author, of course). I have the 717, 737, 757 and 767 in my pocket already. Looking also to do generic 777, 787, a319, 320 and 330's as well. I always felt that we needed a generic fleet to serve Sim Nation.

So I was building another major airport, and then I realised, why should the terminal layout always be orthogonal?

c'mon... google maps, google earth, bing maps, even ios maps if you own apple.

all offer sattelite imagery that gets you close enough for that purpose...

not so shy my dear, not so shy...

of course it's hard, long work with a lot of trial and error... even the self-declared airport-guru - that's me - works a lot with trial and error.

perfectly fine given the vast amount of puzzlepieces and resulting possibilities.

but if you have about a glimpse of what you want to end up with, and consulting reference material (namely the mapping services I listed; I personally love to use google earth for the ruler function) you'll get a decent, if not astonishing result... after a 72hrs shift ;)

don't worry. the time is worth the effort in the end.

I've been making airports for a while and I've decided to post. The airport doesn't have a name but its an Air Canada hub.

And if you need to avoid the shortest of runways, take a look at <a class="bbc_url" href=" title="">GMT's table</a>. I use the following as a general rule:<br /><br />

*Local / regional airport - 800 to 1,000 m (c. 50-65 tiles). ATRs / Dash 8s and the like.

*Mainline airport - 2,000 to 2,500 (c. 125-160 tiles). 737s, A320s.

**London City Airport at 1,500 m is an exception though. ATRs, Dash 8s, Embraers.

*Secondary international airports (like Dublin or Oslo) - 2,500 to 3,500 m (160-220 tiles). Mainly 737s and A320s, A330s/A340s and 767s/777s for long haul.</li><br />

*Primary international airports (like Frankfurt or Amsterdam) - 3,000 and up (190 tiles and up). All types up to 747s/A380s.

Remember that runway length is determined by a number of factors, and rarely are maximum lengths required. At Atlanta and Amsterdam, the longest runways are 3,776 and 3,800 metres long. Dublin live with 2,637 metres. Also remember that maxing out the number of gates isn't that terribly important (Atlanta has 199 gates); placing ground support equipment, hangars, safety equipment, etc., however, will look good!

Nice airport BigBlue. I like that you've made it realistic as it is a Hub of an actual airline. My only critisism/suggestion is how close the planes of your domestic terminal are to the taxi way (the side closest to the taxiway). If a larger plane happens to be rolling through its going to be clipped by the regional jets at the gates.

Other than that good job, the layout is smooth

Thanks Josh6.

I agree with you about the regional jets. The only reason its like that is because I didn't think I'd have enough space to build the runway that runs parallel to the terminal. After I built the runway, I realized that I could've built the terminal the right way but I just didn't feel like going back and rebuilding everything. I might fix it one day.

@Bigblue2010: What an incredible amount of terminals/concourses! Great work!

-------

I'd like to show you Aarenfeld Airport. The airport itself is now complete, but the surrounding area is still a work in progress.

Aarenfeld_01.jpg

A close-up of the Terminal A Lufthansa wing. Today, the giant Airbus A380 is visiting to test the airport's capabilities.

Aarenfeld_02.jpg

Aarenfeld Airport sits on a large city tile and has two parallel runways, both with 220 tiles of takeoff run available.

All the best!

joshrice1

so far nice, but you need a little more spacing around the gates, especially towards the taxiways leading there. right now, each plane would crash into the other. especially the big birds

also, place the VOR antenna someplace more logical. not that it's completely wrong there, but you would get more sense out of it if it was placed on the extended runway center line, then pilots could use it for instrument approaches aswell as a navigational fix, at least for one runway.

mike_oxlong

nice and well planned work, very realistic.

great liveries btw

Drack

good-looking small airport here.

same suggestion with the VOR antenna as for joshrice1.

if I had to give points, you'd get an extra for correct use of the glideslope antenna. a small detail that often gets lost

kccl35

very nice idea to create a terminal that way. looks a little too narrow for the 777 that far "inside" tho. very long pushback and most likely no powered docking allowed...

Bigblue2010

overall a good airport, but the runways look a little at the lower limit.

runway markings are also a bit off. by regulation, these parallel stripes are supposed to be equally spaced from each other as they give a distance indication.

and just what Josh6 said, some more spacing between a couple of you gates and taxiways wouldn't harm. not really a necessity tho as you can always lay down limitations to taxiways (weight, size, noise abatement, whatever comes to mind)

heitomat

wow. nuff said.

Sariah Int'l is going to take me most of this week to finish, considering its size. (Around the size of Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport) I've just finished the International Terminal. :)
