It's quite simple really:  the rule of maximum 800 x 600 per posted picture is firm.  That means 801 x 601 will be deleted without any preamble.

We are graciously allowing picture hosting here, on our servers, and your gracious donations are going to support that.  Please post responsibly.  No one - and I repeat NO ONE is exempt from the above rule.

We could easily change the limit to 640 wide, or none at all, let's not go there!  Thanks, Simtropolians, I know you'll do the right thing, and please remind your fellow members if they break the rules to change their picture before a moderator or admin catches it; because by then, it'll be too late... !  <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/11.gif>

Does this apply to images not hosted on the ST servers?

I have a question about image size. I know that 800 x 640 is the maxium size, it is allowed for images to be 640 x 800 in size?

lol that was one of the things i always caught when i had mod powers, there would be whole days where i would just go through hundreds of posts old and new and clear out oversized pictures or else i would just reuse/resize it.. that easy too, get the location from here on ST then embed the picture with the image height and width the 800x600

In order to help people out, to rescale to be within the limitations, here are couple of common image dimensions and the size to which you'll need to rescale them (percentage wise)

Firstly, remember that all images with dimensions of 800x600 or lower are fine on simtrop, as long as the filesize is correct.

Rescale images of dimensions 1024x768 to 78% (by the way, this makes the image 799x599 <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/5.gif>)

Rescale images of dimensions 1280x1024 to 58%. This will make the image 742x594 - if the percentage is any larger, it'll be too big.

And honestly, folks, it's really not that hard to rescale images. You can even do it in good 'ol Paint. in that program you go to the Image menu, and select the option that says 'Sketch/Skew'. Then, if you're using an image with one of the dimensions mentioned above, change the percentages in the area highlighted in this image (make sure the percentages are the same):

    /idealbb/files/stretchskewpaint.jpg

Whatever you do - don't touch the 'Skew' area of the dialog box.  It will distort your image and probably force your image to be bigger - which would most likely result (if you uploaded it) in the image being taken down from the site.

Hope this all helps some of you. I don't use paint for resizing personally - but I have a program that I don't think many people would have, and thus felt it would probably be better to show an example from paint as for Windows users it's the lowest common denominator (ie all of the versions of windows I've ever worked with have paint).

Why not put an auto-resizer in place, like in the STEX? If it is bigger, it will resize to be no larger than 800 X 600.
    Wadda ya say?

That wouldn't make a difference the size of the image loading would still use a lot of bandwidth. The image size tags just force the image size to be shrunk not the file size.

This 800x600 limit is perfect as the text area of the forums is quite narrow : we couldn't see a whole 1024*768 pic at once. And, as the limit is 150KB, 800*600 pics are usually in low/medium quality : smaller pics are better!

Well as a tumb rule, I keep (most) of the larger screenshots reduced into 500x325 (or whatever in the same proportion of 800x600) to get em' very small<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/22.gif> and not clog up simtrop (thank god)
If I can't donate, at least I keep things little to not overload the server

I know the limit is 150kb, but what is it exacty? Sometimes when I upload 150kb pics off my computer they are too large, so I take some off to make it less than 150kb, and then it works. Just wanna know. I also always put 600x800 pics, too, so, I use a lot of space!

Smaller pics also require less scrolling for people with smaller monitors, or monitors set at lower resolutions.

As for file size, often the program that is creating the graphic does not give the true size. Check the size in Windows Explorer, or simply low-ball the size (ie. for the shots in Digby, I save them at about 140KB)

T'was about time to do something about that.I fully agree with that.

My CJ only has screenshots of 640 max (since the very beginning) , and one can easily see all the necessary details just the same.

Well, it still bothers me how many picture deleted notes I see around. 800x600. It's very simple, honestly. A vertical image that's 600x800 is not allowed, I'm guessing?

yes, and i'm glad the rules are strictly enforced- otherwise people might feel they were
treated unfairly. what gets me is that you see the same people having their pics deleted again and again. it's like they don't learn or something...2.gif

Let's make it even more clear 2.gif

801+ wide it will get deleted

601+ high it wil get deleted

If you are linking images in from offsite, it is recommended that you put a little caveat, and we will allow it to remain since it is not technically using st bandwidth (tho it will slow the load times) Just leave a note like 'Offsite link' [image]
    [/quoteMESSAGE][/bEGINQUOTE]

Ya know Dirk, it should be 801+ HIGH and 601+ WIDE.

Nope, Dirk is saying no more that 800 pixels WIDE and 600 pixels HIGH, i.e. Landscape. If a picture is Portrait (such as a BAT log of a skyscraper) it must be less than 601 pixels high. I often work with a laptop running 1024 x 768, so any threads with pics over about 700pixels wide will involve scrolling horizontally.8.gif' I'd rather see pictures restricted to smaller than 800 x 600.

Well, 800x600 means 800 pixels high and 600 wide, unless I am seriously mistaken.

Edit: Ok, so I'm seriously mistaken.21.gif' Could an admin just delete the last few posts here,? NO need for everyone to see my stupidity.

i dont think that we should make the pics any smaller then they already are...
one reason is that i run my games at 1024x768 so if i want to show a large part of my city at high detail i would have to zoom out but that lowers the detail but if i zoom in i show less of my city...

as i said before...i would like the pic sizes to be larger than what they are...
ill just have to wait alittle longer to see them but it would be worth the wait...

Personally I think that onsite hosting should be limited to 640x480 snd off-site hosting should be allowed to go up to 1024x768.

I guess I should post my images I host off-site linked rather than showing up in the post itself, because one: they are always bigger than 800x600 and two: they take some time to load most of the time.  But in the event I do want to post one in a post, what is the HTML for reducing the width and height?

[img src=(blah) height=600 width=800] was how I *thought* you did it, but it didn't seem to work the other day ... 48.gif

Hmmmm ... never mind.  I guess the point just hit home 21.gif

Well ... that isn't true for me, I can easily fit 1280 x 1024 images in the forum without getting anything other than perfectly normal forum width, etc.

According to what you said here dirk, images over the maximum allowed size are allowed if they are hosted off site, however, I had a room moderater remove several images from a city journal, saying that they must be 800 x 600 and under 200k, even if they are hosted offsite. I feel that them being removed wasn't just since your own post said off-site pics greater then the maxium allowed size are acceptable since they aren't using simtropolis bandwidth.

Now if i misread what you typed here above, i do appoligize and won't press the matter, but I would like an offical word as to whether images larger thenj 800x600 are ok if they are posted off-site.
