sorry i dont mean to bump this again... but i feel a bit of hostility from a few people and some criticism where none is needed...

i did know how to make diagonal roads since sc2k...

i play this game all the time and have cut about 20% off my build time because of this little bit of information that is less than a sentence in the game manual with no picture to show you what they mean...

some of you may have already known this tip... good, then why didnt you share?

some of you are gracious for the information... which makes me happy to help 9.gif

some of you tell me to quit playing the game... and that makes me sad...and sorry this game is like crack to me... and i dont think ill ever quit

i just wanted to put a picture with the quote from the manual... if a pic was there i wouldnt have to say anything

should i keep my discoveries to myself? how do you feel when you've been doing something for so long and then find an easier way to do it? im not trying to change your play style... i just thought i would share something... something no one ever told me and i would only figure out if i read the maxis game manual ... btw prima has some good tips also but it is mainly numbers stuff and nothing with the actual planning of networks..

oh and do it with power lines and you can get some strange angles over other networks... like off the 45 degrees

ah, it's not hostility, just ignorance... don't worry about it. The vast majority of your replies were appreciative of the new information (and knew that you weren't just discovering how to make diagonal roads ;-) ) Focus on the majority.

And as for the power lines, I'm going to try that out, thanks. Anything that will give me a bit more control over them is good. (I hate how they "bunch up" occasionally, I wonder if this method might prevent this in some circumstances...)

And also, you are far from the only addict, I am only giving it up when SC5 (or equivalent) comes out. (and it WILL come out, one day...)

yeah... i give all other city simulators a chance... but the amount of space and region control make it the bee's knees... i still play 2k and 3k and it only makes me appreciate sc4 even more. any new discovery i make for the game (in game) will go in this area... and i would like for you all to do the same... because after all sc4 has been out for a long time and its like OMG!! i just figured this out!

btw i dont use plugins or cheats anymore... they started getting complicated and i want to fully figure the game out before i start adding new things and messing with the games base controls... and i dont like cluttering up my menus... so this will be a thread for un modded game play

For those who are posting about posters not knowing how to do diagonal roads, what they found out how to do was being able to build a straight road that turns diagonal without having to do it in 2 steps. I personally didnt know that you could do it BUT i did know how to build diagonal roads.

    Edited for derogatory wording.

I was curious about that too one day. I noticed it out of the corner of my eye and I sat there and thought about it. I know water pipes burst when the water budget is low. I know roads degrade when the road budget is too low. So I came to the conclusion that the power lines degrade when you lower the power budget. Which is annoying because the total power budget gets lower when you lower the amount that goes to power plants. So for example, in the city that I discovered this in, I build a STEX Geothermal plant that has (I think) a 6000 MWh capacity, but I only needed about 800 MWh, so I lowered it to 1000 MWh. Well that lowered my power budget to 1/6 of what the game thought it needed so the maintenance given to the power lines was cut causing them to degrade and eventually spark. And if you don't fix this, they will cause a fire, which I found out later. Kinda interesting how they added that into the game.

After playing this game to death when it was released, and now back into it for 3 months, I just realized that there is no CO$ in the game. Lol4.gif

I never knew that you could change from straight to diagonal road without letting up on your mouse just by pressing shift, either.  doh.gif  I read the manual all the time, and play almost every day.  Thanks for passing this along, it will save time.  Nice topic, Tysons444.gif  Yeah, I think we should keep it going for some other "I'll bet you never knew..." items such as Jezus mentioned about the power poles.  If you like, I could put something in the Topic Summary to that effect.  Or you could do it.  Just edit the first post and you can fill in the summary window.

Never be afraid to share knowledge, or ask a question if you have one.

To those who already knew this, or thought they did 3.gif, do you suppose there is a little thing you might not know?  After all, how would you know you didn't know if you didn't know?  41.gif  Don't answer that!  This is a pretty complicated game.    29.gif

For instance, how many of you knew that you could click on a "udriveit" with the query tool, and it will cruise you all over your city without doing a thing until it fades away?

    Everyone knew that?  Oh.  33.gif

    Thanks, guys!

Jezus, your udriveits should last a little longer.  But have you ever tried the modd found on the STEX here and discussed in this thread?  It is a bit more resource intensive for your system, but it seems to work pretty well if you follow the instructions carefully.  I know this is just for unmodded stuff, sorry!  3.gif

    Enjoy the game.

Livin in Sim: i do that all the time... i usualy find where the blue udi icons are... wait till the transport is at a stop, turn off the udi icons transport query click and ride... get some pretty long commutes sometimes... really shows what is out of place in the city... never would have thought to add this but yeah it is a fun thing to do in the game... oh, and rename it whatever you want and make it a place for photos of eastereggs videos of udis, alternate building methods and all other things you would never find but are hard coded into the game... maybe call it something like'show us your... bet you didnt know'... then you take a pic of whatever anomaly or alternate way of playing the game, unaltered

the bendy thing would be mine to start it

Thanks for that Livin in Sim, but I'm just not into that stuff right now. I'm more into fixing cities. Example, I took one of the defult cities (I think it's the region London, which ever has the two cities, one industry and the other residential and farms) and added a highway and GLR system, which I must say, crashes my system a lot. Really annoying. Maybe once when I finish fixing cities I'll do it, it seems like a cool idea and as Tysons4 said, it is a great way to see what's going on with commutes. Another problem, I don't have a lot of computing power. My dual core could porbably do it, but I do a lot of things at the same time in the background, example, convert video files or audio files.

Hey ST! I've just made a small or large discovery...which ever you think it is. You can make faded, old looking streets, roads, avenues, and highways with this method. Here's a picture of what it should look when your done.southbreatonfeb10371272.png

Picture from an upcoming update in my CJ...(I think my medians aren't effected because they are a plugin from simpeg.)

Look at the avenues. They are faded. I'm not sure this will stay this way when you re-enter your city. If it doesn't,then you will have to do the method again. Anyway... First,go to the water pollution data view. Build the road, street etc. that you want to be faded. Then exit the data view. The textures of the things you placed should be the same as they were in the data view. Congradulations! You have roads that look faded without plugins instaled(You might need to do it a few times to make the roads look right, and whenever you build a street, road, etc.connecting to the faded road or you build a road over that faded road out of the data view, the textures will go back to normal.).Also, if this is already known,be free do delete this if you're a mod.

New Ticker message: One step Tool for Two step outcome: Manual is Culprit

I think most of you are finding the smallest things far more exciting than they are, But Im not going to tell you its wrong. I played this game for 6 years(within a 5 year timeframe 2.gif ) and never cared to use it.

I didn't know you could use the shift to do it either. Tho, I wish we could build diagonally so I rarely use it at all 15.gif
