Im guessing they only renamed the BD after its grand opening to honor their countries leader, anyways Burj Dubai is much better rather than its new name...

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Dubai opened the world's tallest skyscraper Monday, and in a surprise move renamed the gleaming glass-and-metal tower Burj Khalifa in a nod to the leader of neighboring Abu Dhabi — the oil-rich sheikdom that came to its rescue during the financial meltdown.

It's about as charming a name as "Willis Tower"...

Keep calm and take photographs.

At least the rename has a sort-of good purpose. Great to see the tower finally opened!

This signature does not exist. Continue on.

Perhaps, but then people shouldn't sell naming rights to new tenants 2.gif

The tower itself is a nice building and the opening was fantastic it has to be said. However I can't see Dubai sustaining such developments any more.

It's nice and all, and I don't really care about the name change, however is there really a need for a building this tall? Seems really out of place to me...

Kindof sucks for Dubai, every time they go into the building they'll look at the name and think, we'd be f**ked without him 3.gif

Yes because it's so tall. If we all go round asking is there really a need for this we wouldn't have such amazing things to look at : )

And I imagine people thought the first 2 storey building looked out of place, wherever it was.

But I would hate to be the window cleaners: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/8442192.stm (though I'm surprised a more technical way of cleaning the windows wasn't built in?

If this had been planned to be built in the UK, it would have been completed for the next 100 years and then it would be billions over budget and 20 years late, and completely out of date by the times it's built.

If you have a look at how they're mounting the cleaning patforms, it becomes a litle more hitech. They've got robotic arms mounted on horizontal rails that move across the curved surface, and can be stowed in a compartment when not in use.

Really, what is the big deal?quote>

It's a New York thing. People are stubborn. Once they get used to one name, they're not changing. Ever. The Interborough Parkway was renamed the "Jackie Robinson Parkway" in 1997 - but nobody calls it that.

The argument generally is "It already had a perfectly good name. Why change it?"

That may be, but it's still pointless. It'll only be a few more years til something bigger takes its title.

Of course, this is Dubai, the city full of pointless buildings.

What I find odd about this building is it's a bit of a "combo breaker"...each skyscraper seems to be just a bit taller than the last, but then you have this gargantuan steel and glass erection that's taller than two Empire State Buildings stacked atop each other...

To me Dubai is like that scraper-happy fellow in SimCity 4 who cheats demand by just plopping massive structures downtown that only so many will actually use 3.gif they just kinda built the tower because they could, not because they should

Any large (and mega-expensive) structure is not built "because we're bored". I think is logical all oil-based countries want to change their way of life before they run out of oil. Is that an excuse for building such a tall building? Not at all, but think that this building, therefore, Dubai has been seen in all TV channels in the world in prime time. How would this kind of tourism advertisement cost?
