Granny Legg's Chemical Co. says there's no danger; 'smell' was vapors release

Granny Legg's Chemical Co. has explained a smell in Queensferry that resulted in numerous calls to the company and various public safety organizations.

According to a Granny Legg's  press release, at around 9 a.m. today a relief valve opened due to a pressure build up in the polymers manufacturing area. 

The equipment responded correctly, but as a result vapors were released. This created a strong odor in the surrounding area.

The odor is from a material known as Onimaytherm^TM, which is a heat transfer fluid used to heat up reactors in its manufacturing processes. The material has an aromatic odor (some people have described the odor as flowery).

When handled properly and in low doses, there is no danger to human health. But even at low concentrations, Onimaytherm^TM can be smelled.

Given the short period of time in which the release occurred, the concentrations smelled beyond Granny Legg's Chemical Co. property should be quite low and company officials say the release does not pose a threat to human health or the environment. 

Last month state and company officials said a spill of Onimaytherm^TM at Granny Legg's caused no harm to the environment.

That spill occurred when one of the company's vessels overheated. According to published reports about 160 gallons of Onimaytherm^TM was released to relieve pressure.  Employees sprayed water on the material and the diluted mixture washed into the Queensmucky River, where it dissipated.

The Queensferry Department of Environment and Conversation monitored the incident and said there was no danger to the environment.
