A dried-up riverbed during dry times. Water only comes down after a few days of rainfall since the lake that feeds this creek is itself only being fed by ground and rainwater.

I was looking at some old cities of mine (like 2015 old), and found this experiment with CAN-AM canals:

It looks super weird because I'm opening it with my current plugins folder, so there are a lot of mismatches: IRM, no HSRP, different canal colours (because of Diggis' multiple canal mod thingie), and the usual weirdness of yore, like making every single city tile a pincushion of skyscrapers and very steep ramps (though in fairness, there's still no L1 overpasses for the CAN-AM, so there's not much alternative).

I have never seen anything like this, especially with functional water taxis. It's terrific!

Isn't it weird, given that we have had the means to do it for more than a decade?

I assume that many people are reluctant to create artificial canals due to the often problematic transition between those and the "natural" waters. The challenge of determining where docks should be might also be an obstacle to some, especially if one is undecided about trivial bus stops and rail stations!

Presenting my latest coastal metropolis:

 

KINGDOM OF BORIKE

     City of Guamaní     

 

Starting with a formidable panorama, going from the city's seaport, along the city center beaches, the Guamaní River estuary, and the coastal suburbs of the south!

 

 

The city has a robust entertainment offer between its stadium, beaches and coastal vistas!

 

 

Along with Fuerte Guamaní, which guarded the city's coastlines and port area in older times!

 

 

The city's shores feature numerous tall towers, housing the bulk of the city's nearly 240,000 inhabitants!

 

 

Density only drops properly south of the Guamaní River, beaches in this area aren't quite as popular with the tourists. Things might change soon...     

 

I still gotta add some ships, a lighthouse and a marina to complete the coastal look of this lovely place!

     City of Playa Samaná     

 

Playa Samaná is the most booming of various coastal neighborhoods of my mighty metropolis! Ever since this area got its high speed rail connection, and some further freeway upgrades, and an overhaul of its gorgeous sandy beaches, residents and visitors alike have flocked at an astonishing pace!

I'm aware of the visible bug affecting the RHW-8C crossing over the Hybrid Railway track. This is a bug that I identified in my testing and will be fixed as part of NAM 50's publication. Thankfully it's only cosmetic, traffic operates without problem for both the freeway and the rail tracks.

 

This ended up as one of my most complicated railway builds, sandwiching the elevated tracks between the freeway and the mansions, and then finding a suitable alignment to create a station and matching smooth curves. Good news is my sims love the alignment and are riding up-and-down on both slow and fast trains! My original alignment was further inland, along the power lines, but the ridership was lackluster. I eventually re-did the alignment when re-working freeways elsewhere, much to my delight it works considerably better like this.
