878. Are these one-letter, one-word, or one-emoticon posts really necessary? We can get along fine with proper, informative posts.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Can we not make one word, or no word, or even just 1 emoticon posts. It can be seen as spam and isn't the most welcomed thing around here. Thank you 9.gif

    887.

Get rid of the zots, chptrk, and it'll look even MORE fantastic!

I'd be cool if you developed around it and made a GLR in road.

    Trixies, hmm...

For a new catagory, I choose best mod. And the winner is...

Pegasus for his wonderous landscaping and SimGoober for the wonderful retail stores to put ON that landscaping.49.gif

Thanks Hamish, and citiesxlfan42, don't worry about the zots, it's just a begining test thing right now. I've already developed a lot around it, and I don't have GLR.

And I think I deserve best mod. 3.gif Hmm...by the looks of things, I think I've said I deserve best everything by now. 3.gif

Vote for me or fear the kitty! nekogifj.gif

    491. *Astronelson does some math*

Well, the oldest domain on the Internet was started on the 15th of March, 1985. I'll just take the 1985 bit for this.

So, if it is a forum, it's been around for 24 years.

100,000 posts in 24 years is 4,166.6666... posts a year.

Ignoring leap years, that's 11.4155 posts a day.

So, I can safely assume no-one has ever reached a six-digit post count on any forum in the history of the internet.

    492. Well, if we are using your equations, then I wouldn't be so sure about no one reaching 100,000 posts in a topic.

We are currently chugging along at just under 14 posts per day, or 13.937 ppd.

If we keep that up we will reach our goal of 10,000 in about november 2011. So the end point is getting nearer.

If we wanted to go to 100,000 then we would get there at about the 10th of July 2029. Any one got any plans for the next 20 years? 3.gif

    I did it again.

    896. I think the post rate is reasonably respectable now.

897 What's better? Firefox or IE8? I tried Firefox... it seems to be faster than IE8, but when posting new messages it deletes the "upload to Imageshack" button....

Oh please. It's taken over six years for me to get to this point. I'm not getting to 100,000 here anyime before 2040.

On the other hand, I have seen people churn out over 10,000 posts in one year. A couple people have done it here. Sloppet did it in 2006. Jackie did it in both 2006 and 2007. The problem is that while achieving such a posting rate is perfectly doable, sustaining it for long enough to get to 100,000 isn't, really. For one thing, one person keeping that up for 10 years (or something a bit less for a bit longer) is hard to fathom. For another, very few fora manage to hang around for ten years. Usually within that time the webmaster gives it up, or a server crash or software switch or something will cause all the board data to be lost, meaning everyone has to have to reregister and start over with a zero post count when the site is relaunched.

This did actually happen with Simtropolis, once - for the first few months of its existence, as "Simcity 4 discussion zone", it did not have its own domain and was using a completely different software. When it became "Simtropolis" on January 11th, 2003, every user from the old board was automatically given an account, but no posts were moved and everyone's count was reset to zero. Fortunately, the move from idealbb to FuseTalk in April 2006 did not involve a similar reset - all the data was transfered over.

Also hampering any attempts is the fact that many forum software programs will have your post count go down if one of your posts is deleted - something which never has been the case on Simtropolis.
