I might not be able to do anything on the computer for a week starting Monday, maybe. I'm not 100% sure, but just letting you all know.

Well I figured out I can stay on the computer, I'm not sure when I won't be able to, but it won't be for long though. An update coming soon on my NY BATs.

I've been workin on 599 lexington, starting on the base. At the end i have to make some small additions to the sidesthat are 2 or 3 stories high...these are just to help the "wall to wall-ness" of the building [they are there in RL too]

Excellent work so far. It will look great next to Hanson's Sony Tower and my Citicorp Center. Glad you were able to BAT it!

Nice to see more of the ordinary-looking New York skyscrapers being done. You guys should try to do several of the international style boxes.

Ah yes... Columbus Day! The day we celebrate a guy who did nothing new. The Vikings were the first to make it here from Europe. Amerigo Vespucci really discovered it was a new continent. Christopher Columbus wasn't even a household name until the late 18th century, when he was given his own holiday. Maybe that's one reason why October is so weird... or maybe it's Halloween? Either way, October is like watching a 31 day marathon of LOST. To anyone who actually read all that: You have nothing better to do, do you?

I am glad I got the day off. So I can sit and BAT all day.

    72bayardst2.jpg

    Any notes? Yes:

    Roof junk

    Revise wall colors (more yellow?)

New textures nearly everywhere, for that matter

    Fix windows (colors and designs)

    More junk

But actually, the street level junk is nearly done. Except for some new textures, the shapes are done. Supposedly.

    So, suggestions?

    Other random notes:

-Since my last post, Google updated Street View for Mott Street. It threw me off, but I'm back on track.

-The giant letters on the wall there say "NYBT" in Chinese Traditional.

@Jumpthefence- Excellent work on that BAT! It's coming along just fine. Most of the stuff you noted are what needs some work. The base looks all right to me. Great work! Nice idea for the NYBT reference, I think I might try something like that one day...

@cmdp123789- Well, that is very off topic. Maybe you should browse around some more. BTW Do you have to type your user name every time you long in on Simtropolis? I would just lose my mind with that. lol 3.gif

I was gonna join the cities xl bandwagon but seeing how that game has bombed, i've decided to return to the best city simulation game and give batting another try.

Anyway, I modeled this guy nearly 2 years ago but never got the right textures for it so please, any suggestions and other help would be greatly appreciated.

WOW, this is an excellent thread, congrats. I had wondered how much time it would take to create a thread like this. Honestly, I am really glad that you put his thread into life. This was really necessary. Really great work on your progesses, these all look fantastic! Moreover, I am really keen on the project(s) dealing with Central Park, as I plan a huuuuge update on this. Bethesda Fountain and Terrace would be a great addition to this, as the area is really nice and unique.

Maybe you could come up with other projects concerning CP, like the zoo,.... .

I am really happy to include your ambitious projects in my upcoming updates in my CJ, thanks a lot for your work and time,

    take care,

Conde nast Looks great, but little short.  Is it scaled properly? The spire in RL looks much taller to me

I actually felt the same way after i finished even though it was the exact scale, so I made it slightly larger than it actually is. Maybe if I placed another building next to it for a better comparison.

yes shouldn't the building be more vertically scaled? remember, sc4 buildings should be 133% of the RL height.

    Let's see some progress!

    72bayardst3.jpg

Any comments on the new wall color? Personally, it could use some more red, just a bit, but it's pretty close otherwise.

Also, I need help with roof junk. The pictures I get (Google Maps and Bing Maps) are too fuzzy. If I can't pick out what's an HVAC unit, or storage unit, I'll just make them up.

It's pretty close to done, I say with some digression. The textures need some(a lot, actually) work, and the roof is far from done, but I'm confident. It could be done within a week or two. Shoot, that's a jinx.

    45.gif

    Any ideas? Anyone?

Oooh! A new Mythbusters episode about duct tape! I must watch it... See ya!

I've been a little busy, I started on my second ever gmax-BAT today, this is how far I got.

    xgi74l.jpg

It's the Home Insurance Plaza building in Lower Manhattan. I haven't made the base yet, I finished the basic facade and have to add the very few windows on that red part. For some reason, the render looks bad and its HQ It might have to do with how tiny the brick textures are, I'm not sure.

I've had some frustration with scaling lately...almost to the point where I feel like quiting this for awhile. I made a 5 storey BAT, scaled it according to this Sim Ruler thing I downloaded of the STEX, and it made my 5 story building as tall as a 10 story building.... I'm still using sketchup BTW, but I'm going to have to vertically scale up every BAT I make in Sketchup becuase even RL measurements are underscaled to the Sims in the game(what are they giants?). Any way, how does my second gmax-BAT ever look?

@Jumpthefence- Looking great! That yellow texture needs some work, it's too yellow. The roof probably only has a few tiny HVAC units on it. So you can just make it up.

Jumpthefence: It looks more like painted plaster then a nice brown brick. I would work on getting the "texture" to look correct, then worry about its hue, saturation, etc... Looking pretty good so far though, any chance of making one without the characters on the wall?

simcity4fan12: This is what I do for scale; like folks have said before, use the length and width measurements from RL but compare RL height proportions with the SC4 scale as you model. For example, lets say I'm looking at a picture of a building and I don't know where to start on any of the vertical dimensions. If I see something I am familiar with, like a door, and I know about what it should be in SC4( for doors, I use 3m), I base all my measurements off of knowing the height of that object. So, if I see something 1.5x taller then my door, I know that it is (1.5x3m) 4.5m tall and so on. Of course if you absolutely know the dimensions, then by all means do a vertical scale when your done, but keep that in mind.

As for your new building, a zoom 5 saved as a png would be helpful in analyzing your texture dilemma. Right now it is too small and too low quality to really tell you much. You might have to reduce the noise (perhaps by reducing contrast) just so those speckles go away.

How do you save as a png? I re-did the textures and most of the building becuase it was to wide. I'll show some pics later.

Here's some work Parisian has been doing here's the pics first. The 3 pics he sent me were a bunch of pics packed together, for now here's these.

    The DKNY Building

    The Times Building

    http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=904xo2&s=4

Well, you got good basic shapes down, but you are still making texured boxes it seems. You have to model out the facade and the roof details, textured boxes look ok from a distance, but upclose they look odd. It looks though, even though some of it is textured, it looks good. The Times Building and 425 5th look to tall...you should vertically scale them down a tad bit. You're learning. 2.gif

Great past updates here, and really looking forward to more of you guys!

Well since there is many NYC-esque CJ's out there, did anyone thought of modding seasonal lights for the Empire State Building such as this??

I dont know bout lights.... but I would really love to see is more buildings hahaha so keep it up... oh also I wanted to say ... I know details matter a lot in closeups.... but I think that it would be great as I said before quantity over quality--- NOT TRYING TO AGAINST ANYBODY OR OFFEND ANYBODY..... it's just that people love to do recreations of NYC (including myself a lot) so when something like this comes up I cant wait to see everything done... plus I think the faster they get done the more people would be interested in playing and keep playing simcity 4.... new games come out new things to try I dont know.... I havent played simcity since 2007.... when I say play I mean play the game... to me simcity has become like a challenge... so everytime a NYC comes out I play the game if not.... I dont find it attractive anymore... I think thats the reason why I'm so excited bout this.... it makes feel like I'm playing the game again.... I love the building... I love the citigroup... .I saw on the pic a building with a "NEW YORKER" on it.... can it be done?? the building I'm talking bout.... THANKS GREAT JOB KEEP IT UP

Last night was the school dance. I didn't want to go. BAT time!

    72bayardst4.jpg

Y'know, I'm pretty proud of the roof texture, even if it is too saturated, too simple, and a bit too colorful. But hey, I did it with nothing but the Paint program.

So I worked on the roof. Looking at the models on Google Earth, I could only make out that huge HVAC unit and the roof access. I just made up the rest. It could use a little more work and details on the roof texture and some elements (especially the stairs), but it's not bad.

As for the green roof overhang, what was I thinking? Meh, I'll fix the texture on it and keep it there.

On the walls, I don't exactly know what color to make it. What did you have in mind? The color right now looks pretty close to the Google Street View one... Hmm...

I added the final shape details on the wall, like the carvings and AC units.

As for street level, I finally figured out what the Gizmo selection under UVW Map does! Yeah, I'm ignorant and new, what you gonna do about it? I used it to fit the logos onto the posters. If anyone cares, the are (left to right) Red Lobster, DHL, FedEx, Subway, and IKEA. Why would these be advertised in Chinatown? Who cares.

Also, I need new textures along the walls, especially for Wonton Garden. That's next.

    Anything else?

@mben92- We'll, I might make it in gmax(like I'm doing with Home Insurance Plaza since they are made of very simple shapes). Just after a few more of my BATs are complete, The Downtown Club, The HSBC Bank, Citicorp Center, and Home Insurance Plaza.

@Jumpthefence- Looking good! That is a very great roof. Te saturation needs to be down a tad, you're getting it! I still got stuff to learn myself. 2.gif As for that wall, maybe a dark orange with some wear and tear?
