WOW....London City Hall...you have recreated a fantastic likeness to the real thing. I love this building. The Sydney Opera house, and all these other amazing buildings you are making all look great. You need to get these buildings finished and out there dude. Make all us big kids happy.

whenever i need to make night lights, i tend to forget about the building and start a new one. i know there are people willing to do the lighting for me, but it'd just that i'm lazy and i change my mind a lot. that is the main reason why i haven't released many of these other buildings.

here's a very poor representation of the road layout of Sepang (it lacks smoothness):

    /idealbb/files/poorquality1.jpg

this is where it becomes complicated. there is no way all of this will fit on a 64 by 64 lot or even render as a whole. so i have to determine how to seperate the road and organize the lots to make everything align properly.

how about a racetrack kit? have the grandstands and gravel pits and stuff as separate lots so we can use the road tools ingame to draw out our own racetrack? and plop the kit on the side to make it look like a race track?
understand my idea? i think it'll be more feasible then a huge 64x64 lot

i was thinking about that so i could use u-drive it, but the road tools in-game are very limited. the grandstands, pit, etc. will be all exported separately and the gravel pits depend on the shape of the curve. i know the lot will be too large for most people so i will try to be flexible. i will probably make several lots with just the stands and the pit in order to make your own track alongside with what i was originally planning.

an elaboration on the gravel pits, you could do something like PEG's pond kit to make the gravel pits adjustable to any curve

frogface, i'll see what i can do.
edit: would you be interested in making a circuit like the Monte Carlo Grand Prix, which is on the city streets, not on a seperate track?
a while back (in march), i said that i was going to make the city of arts and sciences in valencia. i didn't think i was good enough then, but i decided to start on it now.
this is just the hemisferic (an imax theatre as well as many other things), i have also started on the oceanografic, which is the largest aquarium in europe.

JEC, these two buildings look awesome! i have been wondering that question for a looong time, why are you always starting new things!? by the time SC5 comes out you will have 37 unfinished bat buildings 22.gif. and i want to have all of your creations! ok, maybe if you rlease the puppy i'll stop bothering you 3.gif2.gif. and how did you get the reflection of the building on the water for the oceanografic? it looks awesome! 19.gif

This is currently the list of unfinished buildings (i still need night lighting on all of them):
Guggenheim Bilbao (texturing and some modelling of windows)
HSBC Headquarters (i can't model anything with this one, and if i export it won't have night windows because no computer could handle it)
Santa Maria del Fiore (finish the entrance wall and bottom of campanile)
    Madrid w2w (sides of buildings)
City of Arts and Sciences (lots to do, only the hemisferic is done the one above)
Sepang Circuit (pit, gravel, road, other stands, etc)
Emergency Centre (i'm not sure what i need to do)
Forum des Halles (the park area above)
    Louvre (way too much)
Sydney Opera House (only night lighting)
London City Hall (only night lighting)

i'm very close to finishing the winery (the one below) and if i don't finish the guggenheim soon, i'll release the puppy seperately just for you. 44.gif
    /idealbb/files/riojabodegas.jpg

about the reflections, it's just the building mirrowed across the y axis and placed under the water texture. i only do it with low poly buildings. i think i got the idea from one of raphaelninja's 3d models.

that's a cool idea for mirroring, i should try that sometime... and for the guggenheim, i would really like to have this for my city! (as i'm sure many would). along with London City Hall. (i even thought about bating this like a month ago) so it seems we have pretty simmilar taste in architecture. so if you can't get to the guggenheim soon, the puppy would be greatly appreciated, but do take your time though 2.gif

we do have a similar taste, i've thought about modelling the seattle central library and the cathedral in brasilia. don't worry, i will take my time.
the guggenheim is taking longer than i thought, though. the hemisferic was much quicker:

jtportland, i will try to upload the puppy tomorrow because i doubt i will be finishing the guggenheim soon. i guess reall life syndrome has come; i just realized that i have to write three essays about some books a read over the summer, and then i still have to read a thousand page history text within a month.
though, to tell you the truth, i don't think it will afect me too much since i will probably end up doing everything at the last minute. 32.gif

JEC I love your work...but one question. Will you ever finish the winery, I mean go back and do the night lighting? Or is it finished as far as you'ew concerned?

    Btw Calatrava is the best!!

fox, i think i won't be making any night lighting on the winery, at least not any time soon.
on the bright side, i figured a schedule to fit in plenty of time to bat.
however, i used that time to do another bat building. i tried not to do it, i couldn't help it. sorry.
it is the Stadelhofen Railway Station, Calatrava's first major design.
    /idealbb/files/stadelhofen.jpg
i had to make some modifications to the building to make it a reasonable size for simcity. it will fit on an 8 by 5 lot opposed to a lot about twice the size.

That station's awesome! I love how the track area is straight, yet the other platform elements make it look curved!

I don't want to add another project onto your plate, but do you think you could do Gehry's Millennium Park bandshell here in Chicago, once you finish the stuff you're working on now? It's awesome, you drive through the downtown and you see this leviathan free-form metal structure at the end of a long building canyon.

I'd be glad to help you with something in return.

don't worry, i'll finish the old ones, but i have already finished my newest building.
    /idealbb/files/night.jpg
there is something about the lot that seems strange (i think it is the trees in the back, but i don't know what to put there).
any suggestions are greatly appreciated. if not i can release it (after making it transit enabled with ilive reader) with the puppy.

about ghery's millenium park: the problem with trying to make his buildings is that it isn't symetrical or similar. the only reason i managed to make the guggenheim was because i had floor plans. if it wasn't for that i couldn't do it. i would love to do another ghery building though, but don't count on it, sorry.

this train station is awesome! is there any way you can make this a bus station and train station? i love the 2 in one lots 4.gif. and i agree, the trees need to go. make it just concrete with some flowers maybe. night lights look great too! will this come with the puppy? or u mean you're going to release it at the same time? and does the puppy have night lighting? that'd be cool if it had a few spot lights... but if not that's cool too 3.gif

another suggestion about the train station, why is the roof green? it looks cool (and realistic im sure that this is what the real building has). but it might look better with the light blue glass opposite of it. just and idea...

i could make it a bus and rail station, but i would have to read a tutorial because i don't have a clue how to do it. all i know is how to make a transit enabled lot.
and yes, the puppy will be in the same zip as the station (it might save some room on the simtropolis server). i haven't exported the puppy yet so i will make night lighting.
the original roof was just concrete. over a period of time some vegitation grew in that area, that is why it is green. i was going to model some plants on the top, but it would have taken up too many polys. i thought i could have used the game plants, but it didn't work as well as i thought.
i try to make the building very similar to the real one, so i probably won't be changing it to a blue roof, it is a good idea, but i already exported on high, and it takes aa while.
finally, here is what it would look like without any trees, just concrete to compare:

To add bus stop functionality, simply add the two bus occupant groups (0x1301 and 0x1926) to the occupant groups property. Then, add the ride bus in/ride bus out values in the transit I/O property.

Should be easy as pie, if you can understand qbert's tranist-enabling tutorial.

That's okay about the bandshell. Could you share your Bilbao titanium texture, though?

i think i managed to make it bus enabled. it seemed to work okay with mysims. however, every time i try to make mysim go through the lot via rail, the train dissapears, he becomes a pedestrian, then goes back on the train.
the tracks can go right through the lot and same with u-drive it; why does this happen?
also, where is the tutorial to change the png file in ilive's reader because the grey background in the menu is irritating.
about the texture, you can use any texture, just adjust the specular level and/or glossiness to make it more metallic (ask swi21 more about it).

edit: fixed the train problem, frogface, thanks

you mean the icons right? well find the relevant PNG file, then so save as so the file is extracted, once you find it (usually it saves it in the i;ive folder, bt sometimes it saves it in odd places)
edit it in photoshop or whatever and make it look pretty, once your finished just go back into ilive and import the png file that you edited and it should have the same instance and group numbers as the old icon, delete the old icon and save and it should appear ingame,
    hope that works 9.gif

awesome job JEC, thanks so much for the bus addition too! the station looks good with both tree and no trees, if i don't like them i can always remove them in LE. AND ofcorse, thanks for the puppy, Koons rules 2.gif. (i already made a small plaza for it).

about the oceanografic, this looks really good! the only thing is the lot size, it looks huge! maybe you could release two versions, one with the water, and one with out. how about you export the pool sepretly, so u can make it a flat prop, this way you could put fountain effects on it (not sure if there are any in real life) but it sure would look cool! 44.gif

about the hemisferic, i think i have to export the base seperately because it is so large. however, i think it might affect the night lighting if i export seperately.
there are several different buildings in the complex so in the end it will be on one (fairly large) lot.
i started on the lights of the london city hall. i think it still needs a bit more lights.
