Bill Nye, The Science Guy Boo'd in Waco

Well...he was actually boo'd for a rebuttal against a particular bible verse:

The Emmy-winning scientist angered a few audience members when he criticized literal interpretation of the biblical verse Genesis 1:16, which reads: “God made two great lights - the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.”

He pointed out that the sun, the “greater light,” is but one of countless stars and that the “lesser light” is the moon, which really is not a light at all, rather a reflector of light.

A number of audience members left the room at that point, visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence.

“We believe in a God!” exclaimed one woman as she left the room with three young children.

Story can be read both [here] and [here].

Thoughts?

I want to hear the exact wording of what he said and the context before I pass any judgment here.

There is apparently no video of it on youtube, despite what one might expect.

Ill take science over religion every time, and what Bill said was utterly true. I always enjoy his films (yes they still show "Bill Nye The Science Guy" in 10th grade, but his "The Eyes of Nye" program is very good at explaining particular aspects of science.

And so the stereotype is furthered...

It's not like he went full out disproving it, he just pointed out a valid fact.

Surely everybody knows that the moon reflects the sun's light. It is after all just a lump of rock.

Do these people also believe the earth is flat?

Bill Nye, the harmless children's edu-tainer known as "The Science Guy," managed to offend a select group of adults in Waco, Texas

Found the problem.

If the moon gave off light then the moon rocks they brought back would emit light. Simple. But, in their defense, the bible never said the moon emitted light, it just said it provided light. But that is not a reason to boo Bill, he's too awesome for that.

OH GOD! Someone went to Texas and stated a FACT! In the words of Bush-er- i mean Will Ferrel "they're using such things as 'facts' and 'scientific evidence"

Is this a joke? I mean, Bill Nye is kind of a doofus, but are they really that dumb? I find it hard to believe. I would have to think that this is some sort of sarcasm or prank story. Don't start associating those people with 'fundamentalists' (I know it's such a dirty word to some of you) because they aren't educated enough about science or religion to fit into any fundamentalist group I've ever known.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

to think, we've come so far, we've known the moon is rock for centuries, we've been there for crying out loud, and yet there are people in this day and age still in disbelief of proven facts. I find their ignorance tiresome. I mean i can imagine people arguing this in 1690 but that's 2006, how can people be so thick?

These should prove to be "interesting" times to be alive in.

One thing I cannot figure out, is if you have such a knee-jerk belief that your views of the universe are beyond question, why

bring your children to see Bill Nye, the science guy?  Fundamentalist never make sense.

Oh, and for the record, Bill Nye rocks!

<3 Religion...

This may possibly sound on the verge of racism and/or offensive to Americans, but thats not my intent.

It seems like you only ever hear about things like this coming from America, despite the fact there are plenty of fundamentalist religious people here in the UK. As far as I know about the only real debate/arugument scientists and religious people are having over here is creatioism vs evolutionism, as so many places are.

Is it simply that I havn't heard any 'shocker' stories from here along the lines of this Bill Nye one, or does it actually occur markedly more in Amerca? (for whatever reason be it; higher rate of religious practice, poorer public education etc)

Just curious, and don't mean to offend.

Sorry to pick on you, Manticorefan, but I've heard Bill Nye (as well as Steve Carrell) are incredibly smart people and must take up these comedic jobs for the self amusement or the money. Probably the money.

But on a related topic to the forum, I have to ask, why was Bill in Waco, anyway? It's such a dominant religious town in the region, I'm suprised he got through the front gates. I understand he was only doing his job, but he couldn't do it somewhere that people don't care as much about religion?

Randomtask- I feel it may just be the way the media works in the US, stories like this always gain more coverage than are really relevant, just liek those Tea parties, woo 250,000 people total out of over 300 million, and some people make it sound like the country was tearing itself apart, who knows.

LMAO, wow....

Well, I suppose if you took the piece of scripture literally (as is mostly unintended if you understand the book of Genesis), you would argue that the moon makes its own light. However, any Christian (or Jew or Muslim for that matter) who has common sense knows that the moon doesn't produce it's own light...

Yeah, ahh, let's not generalize the entirety of Texas because of the actions and thoughts of a few random people. Most Texans (like myself) know better 2.gif.

In the same vein, let's also not generalize the entire Christian faith because of the actions and thoughts of a few random people. Most Christians (like myself) also know better 2.gif
