All this is gonna do is distance Willis from the city. I don't know what they do but I know I would never buy anything from them now. And I don't know anyone who is gonna stop calling the Sears Tower

Yeah, we're pretty much all in agreement here that it will always be the Sears, no matter what they want to call it.

Another specter in a similar vein is the likelihood that Wrigley Field will get renamed and/or rebuilt in the next few years, made more likely by the sale of the Cubs. IMO it's matter of time before it gets replaced by Amalgamated Corporate Communications Conglomerate Park.

Well those buildings you mentioned would never be changed becuase corporations can not get naming rights.

As mentioned companies change the name of things all the time, nothing new there. If you want them to stop renaming significant buildings then speak to the owners of the buildings who allow such things under tenant agreements.

No one is going to call it the Willis tower. Everybody knows it as Sears.

It was changed to the Willis tower on June 15th. But to me and everyone else It will always be called the Sears Tower! The will firm bought out 150,000 square feet of the building, and with it they bought the buildings name. The buildings name was expired since 2003 so the name could have been changed ever since then. Indeed...the sears tower should be recognized as a national landmark and shouldn't be changed!

Like what was said here plenty of times, I'm never going to call it "Willis" Tower. To me, it'll always be the Sears Tower. And anyway, "Willis Tower"? Doesn't sound right.

As a proud Chicago citizen, I am never going to call it the Willis Tower. Nobody I know does, and no one has expressed any favor for the Willis name. Just to see how many people liked the new name, we actually went downtown (via rail, thank you vey much), walked to the Sears Tower, and stopped 100 people on the street out in front if it and asked them what the name of the building was, as an experiment. We have a lot of time on our hands in the middle of summer, you know?

Anyway, the results were...

Sears Tower - 97

Willis Tower - 2

I don't know - 1

I was there this weekend, and the lines for the Skydeck were several hours. They certainly are making money off the tour regardless of what they call the building. Perhaps they should rename it The Chicago Mint instead, it's bringing in enough cash apparently.

Future plans will call for it and the JHC to be renamed Tentacle Tower and repainted red. Here's an image to show proof. It will happen in August of this year.

It is obviously a very sophisticated 3d model of the planned rendition.

A darker red would suit it better, me thinks.

I don't see what the problem is, Willis is a major historical corporation, well known across the world. Not many people outside of the US know what Sears is, Willis is a much more historical company (though maybe not within the US). Chicago should be glad they have attracted Willis to their city.

Get over it, it's called the Willis Building now officially. We got over it when they renamed the NatWest Tower in London to Tower 42, a few people still call it by it's old name but most of us have moved on.

I think people are frustrated because Willis Group is a British corporation, and the Sears Tower is an unofficial landmark of Chicago, and we don't like foreign companies coming over here and renaming landmarks, mind you. 20.gif How'd you like it if an American corporation bought Buckingham Palace and renamed it? I think you'd be pretty mad, too.

So here's the difference: Nobody in the US knows what the heck you're talking about. Most people in the U.S. hadn't heard about the Willis Group before this event, but you can bet that they've heard of the Sears Tower.

Willis tower. LOL.

We, stardust, are the oddest observers of self (a.k.a. the universe).

I'm just a group of atoms typing this.

What do I know?

Just thinking, isn't there some way we (Chicago) could have it made a landmark? And then leave the name as Sears Tower? Isn't that like the Marshall Fields Building? Sure Macy's bought it but it's still the Marshall Fields Building. Just look at the signs on the wall. At least, I think it still says that, I haven't  been by in awhile.

Buckingham Palace is a little bit different to the Sears Tower, The Sears Tower is not a royal palace with centuries of history and the largest empire in history. 21.gif

Anyway, big US corporations DO come over here and change things all the time, constantly with US marketing and stuff, so one British Company moves into one of America's tallest towers, so what? You have more than left your mark on our cities.

Anyway, at least it shows Willis love good architecture. They have Sears aswell as this beauty in London

Though their former Headquarters trumps both their London HQ and their Chicago Office....

Very nice, but Im still very angry about the renaming it. For Chicago it's like renaming the empire state building.

Eh, don't really like that one in London, but that former HQ looks nice. But like Ntq$310 said, I'm still mad about it, and it is like renaming the Empire State Building. The Sears Tower isn't just like any old building, it's special to America for two reasons: 1. Sears is a big, well-known American company, and 2. The Sears Tower is the tallest building in the United States. So, the tower itself is almost an American Icon, regardless that it isn't an actual landmark (which it should be), and I guess that's what makes me so mad about it.
