You could probably put this in the "Show Us Your Computer" thread. You could even put a picture up. 2.gif

“The American city should be a collection of communities where every member has a right to belong. It should be a place where every man feels safe on his streets and in the house of his friends. It should be a place where each individual's dignity and self-respect is strengthened by the respect and affection of his neighbors. It should be a place where each of us can find the satisfaction and warmth which comes from being a member of the community of man. This is what man sought at the dawn of civilization. It is what we seek today.”

    Keyboard: It's a laptop

    Mouse: Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2

This computer's going to be 4 years old in July. So, it's a bit of an antique as these things go.

I'm not considering replacing it, though. Why not? Well, getting a new computer would mean getting Vista (ick). I like my XP. So I'm clinging to this computer as long as I can. I'm just going to absolutely run it into the ground, then replace it when it stops working and not a second before.19.gif

320 gig WDC Caviar Blue SATA II hard drive

    Rambo DVD-RW multi-drive

Vista Premium... I'll be dual booting w/ XP Pro when I get around to setting it up. I haven't had the CTDs I used to get with Vista Basic, so I'm in no hurry.

I just got this one, and got a pretty good deal. I haven't started to tweak it yet, we're still getting to know each other.

Apparently a lot of people are doing that, although honestly I don't think "Windows 7" is going to really be any better than Vista. Simply because, like Vista, it's its own thing, not a DOS shell. Meaning it's going to have the same lack of reverse compatibility.

I've said before that XP is the latest and probably last ever version of Windows as we knew it and loved it. Every successive version leading up to it was a sequel to the one before, and an improvement upon it. Vista is neither. It's something new and completely different. Which isn't inherently a bad thing, but the problem is that some of the ways in which it's "completely different" are bad, not good... and that by separating itself from that which came before it, it creates a huge divide between old and new. And huge divides are never good for compatability.

I honestly think Microsoft marketed Vista completely the wrong way. They shouldn't have pegged it as the next Windows, they should have pegged it as a spinoff. They also shouldn't have stopped making XP.

As for the other blunders of Vista... well, some of them are just asinine ("permissions"), though others really were, unfortunately, out of their control (the DRM thing).

    Manufacturer-Me

    Core 2 Duo 2.4

    2GB (2 dimms) DDR2 800

1.5 TB RAID array, (3x 500GB WD Caviars)

74GB WD Raptor (Windows 7 installation)

    Asus P5N SLI SE deluxe

    ATI (yuck) Radeon 4800 w/ 512 DDR3

    Benq DVD-RW

    Generic CD-RW

    Sound card-on board

    Monitor-NEC Multisync 90 GX2

I want to say my case is Antec, "aspire" is the name on the side.

    Power Supply- 750w Thermaltake Toughpower

Zantec awesome CPU fan, (sorry, don't remember the model and don't feel like looking it up) lowered my temp by like 10-15 degrees F

Operating System-On the RAID array I'm running Vista Ultimate, on the Raptor I'm running 7 Beta.

All this said, Vista sucks, no matter what version, and it's slow, even the 64 bit version, (though there is a speed increase, at least for me) Windows 7 is everything Vista should have been, Vista eats about 50% (1GB) of my ram at idle, (no windows open). Windows 7 is still more of a hog than XP, but it idles at about 36% on the same machine. Open a few things, (WLM, Zune, few FF tabs, etc) and you're back up to 50%, but on Vista you'd be at like 65-70%. I love 7, definately worth it, assuming they keep the price reasonable.

In my setup, I was only at 17-30% CPU usage with FF, ripping a CD via WMP and doing a Comodo virus scan.

The switch to a non-DOS based OS was inevitable.  As soon as Microsoft attached itself to DOS, it knew it was going to have to quit using the OS because fundamentally, it was a really bad OS.  Every iteration of Windows up through XP has been about removing more and more of the DOS underpinnings.

As for the other blunders of Vista... well, some of them are just asinine ("permissions"), though others really were, unfortunately, out of their control (the DRM thing).quote>

Interesting fact about User Account Control:  Microsoft specifically designed it to be annoying.  Vista and XP have different methods of executing programs.  Vista's method, while certainly not a miracle, is more far more secure than XP's method.  Problem is, Microsoft knew that very few programs would be compatible with the new method, so Vista had to have a means to accomodate the old method of program execution.  Microsoft also knew that if they included the ability to accomodate the old method, software companies wouldn't bother rewriting their code to use the new, more secure method.  Microsoft felt it needed a means to encourage them to rewrite the programs to use the better method, so User Account Control was born.  You could execute your program using the old method, but you'll trigger UAC every time you do.  Software companies realized that Microsoft had just played its trump card, and the major ones started rewriting their code to accomodate the new method.
