Is it just me or is the STEX downloading running extremely slow? It seemed to take forever for a little half a megabyte file to download.
Any idea, anyone?

Me three. What I wondered, is that when ST went down from the hacking, the recovery slowed the site down. But I hear that Simtro has recovered, so why is it still so slow (not so much the forums anymore...)?

The STEX is not stable at all since a few months, sometimes it seems to work fine and then the other day it just gets awfully slow and it even has a lot more problems with IE like pics not showing and no uploads possible etc........Reason: probably unknown. No one has given us a solid explanation of what all this could be, maybe a server problem, maybe the finances, maybe a bug that we cannot find, maybe........who knows. Just enjoy what you get, that's what I do. 2.gif

Good advice. You get it for free (unless you donated, but then again, you didn't HAVE to donate. . .) so why complain? Could be worse. I hear that the Sims fan exchanges are brutal.

I've been ranging from about 15kbps (which is bearable) at the most to downloading bytes per second. I appreciate that it's a free service, but it's surprising to be downloading at bytes per second.

I'm getting a download speed of only 500 bytes/sec to 4kbps. I do know that if you download during the night (I'm on eastern time) you will get a download speed of around 18kbps. I think it might be the servers which can't handle the amount of downloads from the americas during the day.

    well I downloaded a few things yesterday... 6 or 7 I think...

and it took almost an hour.

ok, I take it like jason said it already: as long as it works it's ok.

but it didn't quite work. sometimes the downloads set out for a couple of minutes and then continued, and a constant dl speed of 2.5 kb/s is not exactly what I call "working". Working as in the opposite of out-of-order, yes, but not working as in satisfying performance (given that I'm used to a FAR higher dl speed at this page).

But I got my downloads, it took them a (too) long while, but I got them. gave me time to do some workout anyways.

nevertheless I hope there's a solution to this issue!

(omg, aren't we all spoiled by high-speed internet...)

Yesterday, on my lotting/mapping computer, I had to download the NAM to test out a new NAM utility. To my surprise, it was so slow I gave up of downloading it a ST and downloaded it at the LEX.

    Just downloaded something at 6kb/s.

Well. When you think about it... the STEX has been on fire lately. Many uploads a day, more and more users.... so it's basically a simple equation.

Well I can get by... even at 3kb/s. I just find something else to do while things are downloading. Yes it is inconvenient, but the fact that I can get FREE, high quality (exceptional quality in some cases) downloads is more than worth the extra wait.

    Long live ST,

If you really want a faster stex, go to the top toolbar, and on the far right, hit donate. Keep in mind, this site is running off mostly our donations.

    wow 4.0kb/s

    getting there :-)

but I guess pats is right, maybe we should donate some more money. ST certainly aint the only site that gets bandwidth cuts when the money gets low.... 15.gif

I thought it was just me...... I've had problems with this as well as the ones on SC4 Devotion and Simpeg.......

Wish I would've known this before I deleted my whole plugins folder because of glitches... Would've picked some stuff out... Now I am basically playing vanilla... Thank god I at least have Pegs port stuff. Can work on that for now!

    It has been ridiculously slow.

And yes I have donated, so in a way I can complain. Maybe we should have something like SC4D. Those that donate always have access to the LEX even during downtime due to bandwidth issues. Would work here I think.

The STEX is still slow (my speeds have been between a whopping 672 bytes/second and 3.5 kbps). I hope Dirk can get it fixed soon.

I've gotten up to around 17, but it is still really slow. I can download a 10 MB file off the LEX in 5 seconds, but a 5 MB file on the STEX takes about 3 minutes.

My record for the last three days has been a whopping... 2.5 kbps. And for one that has donated, this is just getting out of hand. MY solution: All uploads that are locked or haven't had a download in more than two years needs to be deleted.

Even better idea: Locked uploads and uploads that are not of good enough quality e.g uploads that are just loads of maxis lots merged together

would that be a good idea

    No.

First of all, someone put work into that upload and what would you think if your best upload was locked? Also, locking uploads don't mean you are deleting it's files, because you can un-lock it, the files are still on the server. I don't even know if deleting the upload deletes the files off of the server.

    No it wouldn't. 3.gif

People would go "OMG it's unfair", and so on and so forth - the argument would continue. 3.gif

I've been downloading stuff from the STEX at approximately 56kbps, so there's something wacky going on. It could be that the fibre connection that the server uses is congested (rather than actually being the server itself - remember, it's most likely sharing the bandwidth with other servers) - which is the server provider's issue and not ST's.

The number of people using the STEX is roughly the same as it was a few months ago and download speeds have steadily been dropping, so it could simply be just a bandwidth issue, rather than the server not being able to handle it...
