Band makes "Guitar Hero" Guitars into real guitars

California-based electronic noise rockers The Guitar Zeros take fake plastic instruments to a whole different level of weirdness.

When unabashed creativity and gaming pop culture collide, amazingly bizarre things can happen. It's quite surreal to see an actual band making original music in a live setting with a drum set, a microphone, a stack of amps, a laptop, and two Guitar Hero controllers. That's exactly what The Guitar Zeroes are all about.

The band has programmed its own software that turns Guitar Hero controllers into playable instruments. Though there are only five colored buttons on the controllers, they can be pressed in 32 different configurations, allowing for a broad range of scales and sounds. Plugging the re-tooled controllers into distortion pedals and other effects units also amplifies their rocking capabilities.

For the technically minded, the band has even posted a comprehensive guide detailing the meticulous process required to turn your own Guitar Hero controllers into "music instruments." Granted, the sounds these devices produce under your novice tutelage are likely to fall under the excruciating category, unless you dig your electronic rock-n-roll in the jagged vein of wild and wooly squawks and bleeps. It's cool nonetheless.

If you have the aural constitution, check out The Guitar Zeros' tunes at their myspace page. quote>

I guess all the nerds who think they are superstars because of this game can rock out?

But, just like Guitar Hero this still undermines the whole concept of playing the guitar, becoming a rockstar, partying 24/7 and then dying from overdosing, sex related disease and bullets.

Still, I guess you gotta give them creativity points.

Wouldnt it have been eaiser ( and cheaper) to just buy a real guitar?

You do notice behind them there are REAL gutiars right?

I love this Quote

"This is the future, American Idol is responsible for. Video killed the radio star. Internet Kills Video. The evolution of sonic unity to kill the mind."

Yup Duke.  That's precisely how I feel about it too.  Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that guitar hero controllers make you look...  nevermind...

I will definitely give them creativity points for finding out how to accomplish such a thing. However, I seriously think these make them look like total idiots. And I really don't think these converted controllers should gain the title "musical instruments".

You should just play the haters at their own game and say it "makes you look straight" in a mocking, insulting tone. 3.gif

Nah, in this case I would fill the blank in "they make you look ____" with words like "stupid" or "ridiculous". Or "ridiculously dorky". Yeah, let's go with that last one. Going around playing guitar hero controllers like they're actual instruments looks ridiculously dorky.

But the problem is no one is telling them that they look ridiculously dorky.

Thier being encouraged ( and PAID) to do this, not ridiculed.

Just seems like a gimik  some one would try who failed at being a real Musician.

uber fail

Yes  playing a real guitar requires talent.

Playing Ge-tar hero  requires none.

I hate Guitar Hero and the like. Just hate it when people think they can play a real guitar after playing some time.

Just want to get the freaking guitar and hit them on the head until the thing breaks.

The lip singing thing is going to get worse. Oh god!!!

There is some connection between Guitar Hero and guitar talent but it's very limited. Finger coordination and flexibility (moreso from guitar) mostly.

(...and don't be silly, Guitar Hero and other rhythm games require plenty of talent.)

Hmmm...I don't get it.  These guys take something that had no musical capabilities whatsoever, turn it into a real instrument, make their own music and perform, and they're hated...but pop singers who don't never use real instruments at all, and have writers write their songs for them to sing are the most popular "musicians" in the world?  How does this make sense?

I think it's amazing that they took a piece of plastic designed as a game controller and turned it into something with real artistic merit.  And I've heard worse music from much more popular bands who play real guitars.  I've also heard much more popular songs played on actual guitars that use a lot less variety of sounds ("Blitzkrieg Bop," anyone?).

You guys always complain that Guitar Hero takes hardly any talent...and it doesn't.  It really is just a glorified Simon.  But it does take considerable talent to rewire a plastic controller into a viable instrument that is compatible with pedals and such, and use it to make coherent songs.  Not that their music is the best, but at least they've got a definite sound and direction using these things.  Don't knock them for trying something different.

One more thing...don't look at it like they made a guitar out of these controllers.  It's more like they made synths that look like guitars.  I bet if they reworked them, they'd make some nice Shoegaze music....
