Re-creation of Toronto, or more specifically east york by the looks of it.

You should add more Information to your posts, that way people will know what they're commenting 2.gif

WELCOME TO SIMTROPOLIS. I can see that this is your first post at all. Nice start. As for now the recreation is really realistic. I am waiting to see more

Interesting start, look forward to seeing some more. Looks like your following the real life city well looking at your road layout and coastline. Keep up the good work.

Aw, some people have spoiled the surprise for me if this is in fact, Toronto!! I was looking forward to the mystery unraveling before my eyes. I agree, you've made a good start with your recreation. I like it so far. I also like that you didn't provide much information to begin with. It intrigued me!

Well, i think this is a very cleaver. I mean if he had labled it East York, Toronto, Canada, and gave a detailded explination, i dont beleive he would have received so many posts. Im sure he would have goten  plenty of views, but mostly lurkers.

Simcity4nj: you have racked in 13 posts over two pictures and three words. Congradulations!!!

oh, and welcome to Simtropolis...

EDIT: It is indeed East Toronto, I soomed in on Toronto and was taken to this exact location.

Yep, it's the Beaches neighbourhood and part of Scarborough.

I would change the title, though, "City" just kind of makes it look amateur-ish.

Very good work, but I have a question.

How do you know, from RL throughfares, whether they're a street, road, or avenue? Here in Australia our streets are only different from roads in width, not colour like on Sc4, So I'm just wonderin....

In Canada at least, the cities have seemed to use Avenue, Street and Road for any type of street interchangably, it doesn't actually mean anything, any piece of ashphalt could be an Ave St or Road. Sometimes it is confusing, I suppose it's certainly less clear than in other places, I imagine.

It's not much, but it's progress:

    (click for full size)

    1southeastsc4regionview.jpg

Now, I will give some details on the project.  The goal is to make a complete recreation of Toronto, Canada.  I have started in the south east corner of the map and will work my way west, then north.  Progress will be slow, updates will be sparse, and the chance of completion is low, but I'm hoping for the best.  The current choices i have made on what are streets, roads, avenues, etc, are only approximations.  Once i have a good chunk of road network done, i will go back and revise them for better accuracy.  Here is a satellite picture of the area shown:   (all photos will be click-able for full size)

    2southeastgeoverview.jpg

The pink outline is the approximate area that i have created so far.

The reasons for the slow progress at the moment have been a malfunctioning mouse which has decided it doesn't like to click and drag anymore (very frustrating when trying to make a 60 tile long road)  and that i have spent much my time overhauling my plugins folder to best fit this project.  I have spent a lot of time scouring the internet for Toronto BATS and lots as well as Toronto lookalikes and Toronto style buildings.  I have also spent significant time collecting mods to aid this project.

The current mods that i have installed:

    Network Add-on Mod

    Rural Highway Mod

    Beach Height Mod

    Colossus Add-on Mod

    Street Add-on mod 3

    Bridge Height Mod

    BRF's Tunnel and Slope Mod

Since i was already playing around with Google Earth, and i enjoy showing off, here are two snazzy 3d pictures that i took of two awesome cities.  Sadly, Toronto is not yet available in full 3d.

    Bean-town

    boston.jpg

    Chi-Town

    chicago.jpg

    Until next time...

    Wow,

    I will watching this closely!

Do you know har far north you plan to build?

I live in Richmond Hill, in suburban Toronto. But it looks like you are only doing Toronto Proper.

I wish you lots of luck on this, as Toronto is a massive city. I can't wait to see how it turns out, and you look like you are going to do a great job. What you have so far is beautiful. I can't wait to see how you do the Don Valley, and the downtown core.

So, good luck, and I can't wait to see whats to come!

    Good luck!

    I love T.O!

Oh, and are you a Torontonian yourself? Or somewhere in the GTA? Why did you choose to do Toronto?

    Again,

    Goo luck!

That's a fantastic map, I just hope you use lots of custom content in the way of buildings, a map like that deserves to have the correct buildings on it 44.gif

If it's a complete re-creation you're after, I suspect you'll have to do a lot of BATing yourself. Good job with the streets so far. I assume the map doesn't extend to outer boroughs. Even if it's just the city you're doing, that's still a pretty huge undertaking. Good luck!

Well I don't have an update prepared for you guys but i decided i should probably start replying to people if i want to maintain any interest in this project.  I have still been working on the area of east york, slow moving inland.  Progress is slow but steady and i work on it whenever i get a chance.

    Replies:

psanders5:  I too was thinking the mystery would last much longer considering the small area that i showed of Toronto, i still can't believe people recognized it that quickly.

Almighty Nienaber: Thanks for the support, i was trying to start things off a little differently.

edmonton_stinks: Titled changed.  The old one was just temporary to keep the secret.

    knarfmo: Thanks for the interest!

boon1234: i usually just count the lanes of the roads by looking at google earth and then try to find the best matching network in Simcity 4.  Streets usually show up as a lighter color than roads in Toronto satellite images.

    CKSmooth: Thanks for the interest!

Jamietoronto: I did a little measuring and i think the map extends northward to about where Yonge and Finch intersect, which is obviously short of the Richmond hill area.  I too am looking forward to (nervously) to doing the Don valley area.  It should provide some nice challenges and test the limits of Simcity 4 and my various mods.  I actually live in Maine and recently visited the University of Toronto, which is what inspired this project.  It was my first time going to Toronto.

WillG_75: I've found a large number of Toronto bats so far as well many bats that look similar to real life Toronto buildings.  I hope to make it as accurate as possible.

edmonton_stinks:  Sadly i have zero bating ability so i will have to do the best with the buildlings that i can find.  Maybe people will feel inspired to do some Toronto bats to be used in this project. 19.gif

hmmm... that last comment got me hooked. I think I have some Toronto buildings that I'm going to bat, since I have a person who can showcase 'em for me.

I already know a few the STEX is lacking.

Nice so far. I admire your effort, but it's going to take forever... How exactly do you plan to do the 18 lane part of the 401?

Yes, another re-creation and an unusual, but great start! Altough the first picture seems to be very griddy, there are truly some challenges, which you coped up with in a great way, because your street layout looks very accurate. These are some of the real challenges when doing a re-creation: getting the streets, roads, etc the way you want within / without the limitations of the game. If you need some advice on how to do roads off-grid on a large scale you are invited to refer to my tutorial somewhen at the beginning of my CJ. I've developed a simple, but yet very effective method to get the roads in the right place with the right angle, hope this might help. Great work so far, keep it up, please. In addition, the google earth pics do look very impressive, good luck in creating this. Well, looking very much forward to more and good luck,

    lucky7

Like the idea of the City Journal can't wait to her about it.

You also got the roads and everything correct this defeinetly something to watch.

P.S. I tryed making Toronto before but I failed at it. Had problems when it started heading out to Etobicoke.
