CHICAGO
/idealbb/files/Chicago

This is my attempt to recreate the city of Chicago from scratch. It will mostly be a fictional recreation based on the real city. I will do my best to get most of the streets, zoning, and even historical events correct, but don't bark if your street is missing or my dates are wrong!

The city will be grown from normal game play. I'm using no cheat mods such as the plop mod or money makers. I have created a few custom lots to enhance the look of parks. I will also use the road top mass transit mod for street bus stops. I'm also considering using one of the reskins of the trains.

There is no way I can entertain as well as lewellan222's Digby region, but I will do my best! Digby is inspiration...

    The current budget for 1811

All cities created in the region will be played using the Hard level. This level gives the lowest starting money and a lower level of demand for development. Below is the city budget for 1811.

    /idealbb/files/Chicago

As you can see the city is doing quite well financially. This is because there are almost no public facilities. The only educational facility is a single library downtown. There is a small clinic for health, a fire department, and a couple of water towers providing limited water coverage.

I don't plan on building schools until the railroads come in and demand a higher educated work force.

Below is a map showing water coverage in the city. I'm limiting water supply in an attempt to control how the city develops.

I think you're forgetting that the city is currently in 1811, long before skyscrapers existed...

I used the jpeg from the Map Exchange. First I toned down the contrast to try and lower the terrain a bit. Then I recreated the config file so that it would better shape to the city bounderies. After that, I had to use the terrain editor in Sim City to shape the rivers more correctly.

I agree, the jpg in the MEX isn't very good. I could try to send you the entire region in a zip file.

I forget the exact date, but the Great Fire occurred sometime in 1871... a good 53 years from the present.

EDIT: For additional information about Chicago's past, click here .

Which photoshop filter did you use? Or was it a more complex technique???

EDIT: I think I sort of know it now. Did you make a new layer, used the Find Edges, then overlay the layers with a Soft Light?????? It is wasn't, then I'm guessing that your method was pretty close.

First I increased the contrast to sharpen the color differences, then used Filter>Brush Strokes>Ink Outline... from there I adjusted Hue and Saturation of the blue to wash it out and make it more inky looking. The text is in a separate layer of course... pretty simple. Most of the pics I'm using one of the filters and/or adjusting color in some way.

I've been fiddling with layers lately to try and find ways for some more dramatic lighting effects (especially for the upcoming fire).

Yep the fire was in 1871, October 8th.

Are you gonna make the canal/river smaller? It seems way out of porportion. And when will the docklands be incorporated.

Oh and are you gonna cover the exibition in the 1890s. I know you are still far off.

I like the nice old-style look of your pictures (black and white), and the news updates. I look forward to seeing more of what happens to Chicago.

Definitely had to use layers on the last image ... created a separate layer and airbrushed the monochrome color on then applied a filter to add grain and texture.

An interesting thing... the harbor is extremely successful in this location. Take a look at the traffic and utilization. This is even with several road connections to neighboring cities.
