I think I'll agree with a few other people and say Hong Kong. Excellent mountain backdrop, nicely designed buildings and also at night all the lights aren't the same colour. It's almost perfect.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>It looks quite unremarkable compared to all of the others becuase of a local bylaw that says that you can't build towers that would enshadow Parliament Hill - a controversial bylaw to those who want to give Ottawa a distinct skylaw like New York or Toronto.

</end quote></div>

That makes the city more excellent, I think.  A city with excellent streetscapes are better for for actually going to and visiting, while a city with excellent skylines are better for looking at over the internet or zooming by on the highway.  (Although there are some cities that can achieve both, still, most skyscrapers are only interesting from the ground for a minute or two.)

The older skyscraper cities like NY and Chicago tend to have better streetscapes for walking around in and visiting, because they became skyscraper cities before the automobile age was in full swing. The newer skyscraper cities are built mainly for cars, so there's not really a whole lot of areas that you really want to walk around in.

Although...

Hong Kong is breathtaking (especially at night),

New York being just plain awesome,

Dubai standing out it terms of highrises and

I am in sentimental feelings for the Phoenix area incl it's skyline,

I lost my heart to this because just nothing can beat the beauty of these 2 sceneries:

Hon Kong for me.

New York is to spread out (almost to the point of having two downtowns),Tokyo is way to drab, and Shangi is too big.

Chicago is second on my list, but I like HK better cause of the archetecture.

I think most people either forget or don't know that the skyline of NYC directly reflects the bedrock below. The shorter buildings in the middle of the city is due to the bedrock being too far below the surface, whereas on the north and south ends, the bedrock is shallow and makes for a firm foundation close with easy access.

You just can not compete with the epicness of Pittsburgh. When you enter the city from the Fort Pitt Tunnels the city just expands in front of you.

Did anybody say Shanghai?

This is a render, though. The tallest tower is currently under construction. And there is a 319m tower being built in the foreground as well:

http://pic.qnpic.com:83/r.jsp?fn=//fanjoin/share/2011/9/3/109572_1315051315.jpg

Still think it will be awesome. Though, not as much from that angle.

Also, what is this error message supposed to say?

"You are not allowed to use that image extension on this board."

I have to say Philadelphia. When I'm watching Good Day Philadelphia early in the morning or their news at 10 pm, and they do their overview of the skyline, it is absolutely breathtaking.

I apologize for the Chongqing "overload", but I think the city is that unknown and imho deserves better recognition as one of the greatest cities of China and one of the most fascinating and exhilarating places I've ever been to. And I have been around proverbial block, so to say...

Virtually all you could see is build in last 15 years or so, and city is on a steroid like growth that has no equal in the world It chops out in excess of 300 million (!) sq f or residential buildings a year! Albeit spread over it's huge territory. None the less it is one of the powerhouses on China and enjoying sustained 14,5% local GDP growth for last 10 years - second only to Tianjin's 16%. Plus Chongqing is still "poorest" of great Chinese cities and sky there is truly limit, given that it largely geared for domestic market (and hence weathered 2008-2009 crisis better than any other (again except Tianjin). Why I say it? Just to let you know that what you see is just a beginning of a place that would in few years perhaps rival in sheer scale Tokyo or Shanghai - another city you, for some bizarre reason, don't see much here...

I'm sure this topic has been done before but I would just like to get some new opinions. Which city do you believe has the best skyline in the world? Personally I love the city of Vancouver B.C but think it's skyline is pretty drab. My favorite is Seattle. I think Mt. Rainier and the Space Needle all go together perfectly.

would you like to see the worst?

future SF...within 20 years:

<img height="365" width="538" alt="" src="https://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m96/mrayatsfo/transbayscheme0107e.jpg" />

also future:

<img alt="" src="http://www.socketsite.com/archives/SF%20Actual%20And%20Proposed.jpg" />

I love SF!! I actually kinda like how its not too vertical, I hope they keep upcoming megascrapers away from transamerica pyramid. That building's so awsome, i'd hate for it to get drowned out. Also hope nothing blocks embarcadero center, looks so beautiful from the bay bridge.

**oh, i guess I can't copy pics in my replies. I was referring to the pics on page 2 which showed sf future development

Only a few mentions of Portland? Sure, we don't have tall towers, but that is to protect the views of Mount Hood to the east.

Been mentioned above but Gold Coast, Australia has a fairly impressive skyline for a city of ~600k. 2834038025_699c408524_o.jpg

Also, this image of Seoul blows me away. The high tech futuristic metropolis look always gets me.
