Today the largest search engine in the world went live, and its called Cuil. I checked it out today for a second and it looks pretty cool.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuil

This engine says to be larger than Google as well, with 120 Billion pages in its database. Former employees of Google started the search engine. How ironic! 9.gif

I gave it a test run. Not bad, but it does need a lot of work. Perhaps it has too many pages, because many of the pages I came up with in my search turned out to be either dead or suspicious. One of them made my browser do unpleasant things...

Well, anyway, I do hope the best for it. Anyone or anything who can knock Google off their snooty, hypocritical perch is tops in my book! 9.gif

In the meantime, I'm sticking with Live Search.

That's interesting. I must say that it is quite cool. It looks nice, Good luck with keeping the largeness because Google is fierce.

Set it as my home page; don't know why! I feel a strong attraction to it.

The design is quite sleek.

I'm getting spyware after looking around with it...YAY...39.gif

More sites = more possible viruses...hah...3.gif

But those are the topics, not the browser. I'll just have to be more careful...

The question we need to ask ourselves is.

Do we need another search engine?

I vote yes as well.

Search engines shouldn't have a monopoly any more than news outlets should.

Access to information is too important to leave in the hands of just a few people.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I've just tried it and I don't like it right now. Having images could be nice, but the images weren't very useful (the images don't seem to necessarily be on the page, and if they are on the page, they're not very useful). While this layout allows for more description text (which I personally don't pay much attention to), it's easier to scan the page titles and urls with google, and this layout cuts off long URLs, which I like to see. It doesn't seem to have an image search either. And just searching things, I like the search results I get from google better. I'll come back to it later to see if it's better though.

I tried it. Searched "Simtropolis". It found it on the forth article, the main page that is. It did come up with wikipedia first, but I'd rather say that I want wikipedia by typing "wiki" in the search than be shown it as the first options.

Google finds the main page first.

Although it did find 91,648 while google only found 73,200. Its not bad, but I wont be switching anytime soon.

It works rather slow for me. Searching by Google always takes less than a second for me, while with Cuil I had to wait even for 5-6 seconds before the page showed up. I like the 'search by category' function though, and the pictures can sometimes be useful.

Yes.  The more pages it indexes, the better.  Someone has managed to top Google for pages indexed, so that means we needed another one.

Well, it needs some improving, but it's a start.

Well, given that it's searching 15 times as many web pages as Google and probably doesn't have as many servers to run it all, that's not too bad. 3.gif

Lol, once Google hears this you know what'll happen...they'll be amassing millions of pages just to top it. 3.gif You know them. I just don't like this Cuil as much...takes of too much space in the results page, too many pictures, too much scrolling.

According to that logic, we must not need Google either.  Is an aspiring computer geek doing a search on artificial intelligence going to have the time to wade through all of the results (27.7 million results)?  Will a soccer mom need to search through over 40 million results to find out what her local weather is?  Will a 11th grade student doing a report on rain patterns in Cambodia have time to search through 50,000 results?  No, to all three of them.  The point is that the greater the number of results, the more likely you will be able to find what you're looking for.

I haven't tried it yet. I'm leery of security issues. I'm guessing that after a couple of months of operation the new engine will have resolved it's worst security flaws and maybe streamlined and/or debugged any significant technical problems. So I'll try it in a month or two. For now though I'll just huddle down behind my safe, secure, reliable Google.

Yeah, I prefer Google's layout, much easier to use. Depedning on what I'm searching for and depedning on how much I want it dictates how many search results I'll do through but normally its not more than 3 pages on Google.

I doubt anything will beat Google within at least the next 10 years, almost every internet user knows about Google and its one of the first websites that they teach most children in schools. Plus Cuil doesn't sound like a very good name whereas Google is just weird and memorable.

Very good point.  Also consider that there are huge chunks of valuable information that Google doesn't include in its search results, such as research reports conducted by teams who post the results on their university's intranet.  Multiple search engines can be a valuable resource for when you're trying to track down some very specific information, especially when it's not mainstream stuff.

A good search engine has good and relevant results for your search, not a large amount of websites indexes. What do you do with millions of results if most of them aren't relevant?

I searched for many things, yet it failed to give me results as useful as google did.

I hope they improve.
