    Replies:

I've recently discovered the joys of the BAT, which has been taking up all of my SC4 time, so I don't have an update ready this week. Here are some replies in the mean time.

crazyarchitect: Thanks!  Ha ha, I guess it's a hotel you're after?  There aren't any yet in Calder City so I'm sure it's about time!  Plus there's the Gelderland Games and possibly the Commonwealth Games to think about!

un1: Glad you like it!  the wind turbines are these.

Godzillaman: It was the obvious choice, although it looks a little 'over-tall' at the moment.  Thanks for the comment.

SirUnger: Thanks.  I've never built a heliport before so I wasn't sure that it would work.  I'm glad you think it does.

Theirishnintendonerd: Thanks.  I think the city hall looks a bit 'old' for my storyline, but it is a good looking building!

Danlikebooks: Thanks, i'm glad you liked the update.

    CraigKingOfIreland: Thanks! Me happy!

Update 5 - City Centre Developments - A New Station

Apologies for not being able to update sooner.  I've been spending more time on other things recently!  Some of you might remember (I've mentioned often in this CJ) that I'm planning a super CJ for the New Gelderland nation.   I've been making flags and regions for that.  I've also been BATing quite a lot, and spending a lot of time in Virgin Shores

Anyway, now I've got the excuses out of the way, I'll show you some of the developments in Calder City!

The citizens wanted to expand the city centre shopping options, so the council built the following development to emulate shopping streets in the UK.  I don't have a name for the district yet.

    shopping1.jpg

As seen from the top of the immigration building:

    shopping2.jpg

Calder City has also been given a new Central Station after the old building exceeded it's capacity.  Fans of the old building should not be disappointed as there is a replica scheduled to be built to replace Calder East Station.

    NewTrainstation.jpg

A new office tower has been built in the centre.  Its primary occupant is the New Gelderland Road, Ocean & Air Logistics Corporation... in serious need of a re-brand to push into international markets!  The building under construction on the left of this picture  currently has no signed-up tenants.

    Skyscrapers.jpg

Now we'll take a flyby past the CBD, Westwards from Calder East Train Station to the new Central Station on the western edge of the CBD

    MosaicA.jpg

    MosaicB.jpg

    MosaicC.jpg

    MosaicD.jpg

I messed this up a bit.  I missed a row of pixels on some of the snapshots... oops

Zooming out from the City Centre for an overview

    Citycentreoverview.jpg

    Completeoverview.jpg

The Commonwealth Games bid is in its latter stages now.  Here's the logo for the campaign:

    bidlogov1.jpg

And to act as a teaser for the upcoming New Gelderland project, i'll show off the national flags here.  They'll feature in the Gelderland Games update so I might as well start showing things like this here!

The official National flag, like the other two large nations nearby; Australia & New Zealand consists of the Union flag in it's canton and a blue background featuring the southern cross.  New Gelderland's flag also contains the nation's national emblem, the New Gelderland Red Fern.

    FlagVersion2-unioncanton_crux_redfe.jpg

The alternative flag, used extensively by New Gelderlander's is a simple red flag with an enlarged fern leaf emblem in the centre.  The original design was a  red fern leaf on a white  background, but the populous thought a solid red background would be more powerful.

    redfernflag1.jpg

The two flags are often flown in unison within the nation, but it is usually only the official flag that is flown abroad.  The use of the red fern leaf helped to create a huge rivalry,  mostly in sports with New Zealand who also use a fern leaf as their emblem.  The result is a series of occasional sporting events named the Ferns Series'.

I hope you all liked the update!  I hope to get another one out in less time than this one took!

The town looks good- real progress here. And, I like the flags - very nicely done and attractive.

Wow, everything is looking great, and yes, I would love to expand into this prospering city, especially for the Commonwealth Games.  I want to build a flashy, yet elegant hotel in the CBD, I was thinking of this one:

The overview of the city looks stunning! Great building style & I love the parks =)

Do watch out for repetition of buildings though 2.gif

Well I said I'd get around to commenting next time you got around to updating, and so here I am.

And I'm highly impressed. Now that's some good city-building. And a very impressive shot of the CBD and surrounding suburbs.

Cool mosaic too. Overall, a very good update!

Schulmanator: Thanks!  I'm glad you like the flags... they're the first i've ever made!  I've also made them into props for lot editing, though I haven't done anything with them yet.  I'm glad you like the progress.

crazyarchitect: I like the hotel.  I'll build it for the next update.  I hadn't thought about acommodation for the games yet.  It might help the city to win the Commonwealth bid if I do!  Thanks for the compliments!

CarmineHilton: I'm really happy you like the way the city looks.  Don't worry too much about the repeating buildings!  I'm In the process of phasing them out.  In a few updates time they should have a lot less of an impact on the skyline.  In fact, the new shopping district replaced an area of repeating low-rises.  I like having large parks with not too much in them!  I'm glad you like them.

roboo1: The city is indeed expanding.  I'n not too sure yet what's going in all those empty construction areas.  They're being carefully considered! I'm glad you like the City

fabsies55: Thanks!  Advice noted.  I intend to fill in the gaps and build a bit more medium density residential near the centre.  Demand is plenty high enough for lots of commercial developments though.  Many workers commute from surrounding suburbs.

deathtopumpkins: You're here!!  I'm glad you're impressed it, thanks for the compliments.  "good city-building"  I hope that's bodes well for the future of Virgin Shores!!

Rictiovarus: Thanks!  I love water, especially adjacent to CBD's!

edmonton_stinks: Thanks indeed!  Your 'The Costello' has already popped up in one of the residential areas btw.  It looks good!  I'm glad you like the CBD.

Oh wow, amazing update from Calder! And it's a commonwealth huh? Nice, don't see much of those around ST. (I always see either Empires or Federations or Republics, but no Commonwealths.) 48.gif

You sure are one for before developing city planning! I'm loving those sunken highways AND rail lines. Plus the city center looks very nice, the plaza's are well built.

Can't wait to see more of Calder. Looks like its still being built. *stares at those construction lots* 2.gif

Update 6 - New Venues & Business Highrises

In anticipation of further growth and future world events, the Calder City government approved the construction of two new hotels in the city.  The first, The Pearl Coast, is a highrise building for the city centre built by Lunchbox International Holdings Inc and headed by crazyarchitect.  It boasts close proximity to the CBD and to the sports complex.  The new hotel overlooks the lakes and river in Calder Park.

    PearlCoastHotel.jpg

The second hotel was built in Little Helsinki in close proximity to the Helsinki Convention Centre.  This hotel, a more modest building was built by a New Gelderland company; Deep Blue Hotels who specialise in city hotels.

    HelsinkiHotel.jpg

The Helsinki Convention Centre was built to house various industry and business conventions and conferences.  The main auditorium can seat 9000  people, and is used by the Helsinki Hawks for Ice Hockey games. Ice Hockey is big in New Gelderland, and the Helsinki Hawks are the second team in the city.

    HelsinkiConventionCentre.jpg

The Calderfields Arena was constructed in North Calderfields using part city funds for the Commonwealth Games bid.  The second part of the funding for the new arena was paid by the Calder City (??? I can't think of a name right now) Ice Hockey team.  The arena holds 18500 spectators for hockey, and is also used for concerts.  The arena is expected to be used for basketball, boxing and martial arts in the Commonwealth games.

    Arena.jpg

Calder City University & Collegiate Park. I don't think there needs to be much more explanation on this one.  The Uni is located in East Spowston, directly north of the CBD. (I sense I need to make a districts map soon!)

    University.jpg

New developments in the city centre - The Gherkin. This brand new, iconic office tower was built by UK architect Norman Foster of Foster & Partners.  The building was originally planned for the City of London, but British planning constraints tempted Foster to bring this landmark to the more liberal New Gelderland.

    Gherkin.jpg

Surrounding developments in the city centre.  The plaza around the Gherkin is in the process of being filled.  Only one lot needs to be constructed as of this date, as several new towers have been recently completed.

    mosaictop.jpg

    mosaicbot.jpg

This mosaic was going to be bigger, showing the park beneath, but I messed up the last picture and i'd already closed the game.

That concludes update 6!  I was going to include an overview of the city as i've added 40000 homes to the city since the last update, but my zoom related crash-to-desktop problem got the better of me.  I'll take them next time though, when my laptop's at room temperature!  I'll also be working on the suburbs I think for the next update.

    Repliesbanner1.jpg

jacqulina: Thanks very much.  I'm glad you like it.

crazyarchitect: How's it look to you?  I think the bid's in the bag really!  Calder City is odds on favourites to be the host city!

fabsies55: Some buildings have come up... you are the judge on whether they are awesome or not!  Thanks for the comment.

mayorron: I'm glad you like it!  Watch out for the farms, they'll feature in at least one of the next two updates.  Thanks for the comment.

edmonton_stinks:  It has indeed!  I don't think it's in these pictures, but I know there's at least one in the city.  I reworked one of the western suburbs the other day and got whole rows of them in new developments!  I look forward to the second one.

Archean: I'm glad you liked the last update!  Actually, the Commonwealth Games are for all the nations of the Commonwealth of Nations, formerly the British Commonwealth and British Empire.  I've not decided yet what kind of state New Gelderland will be, but it will probably be a republic or monarchy (with Queen Elizabeth II as it's monarch), similar to New Zealand and Australia.

Thanks for the compliments!  I just got some new plaza lots.  I've been having fun with them in this update.  I hope you still like them!  I'm glad you like the sunken networks too!

    Nice!

    Did someone mention a map???

I like the arenas (it appears you've done some re-lotting too on the surroundings, spec. the parking lots), and those are some fine new skyscrapers as well.

Lastly, I see LIH has expanded into Calder City now too.

Great highrise/arena update! The scrapers are looking great. I can't think of a team name either...
