Disaster Mod ideas

I want to change the disasters and I don't know how. Here is what I want to do:

I see no need to change Autosaurus, Earthquake or the Robot.

The Meteor, Volcano, Tornado, Fire, UFO and Lightning disasters should be variable in intensity. I could see doing them like a terrain tool or making them like the Earthquake by having them get stronger the longer the mouse button is held down. For example, I want the Meteor to range from a pebble that wastes maybe a 4x4 area to a huge asteroid impact that levels an entire small city. The Volcano could go from a tiny thing that makes a little magma to a supervolcano mountain that shoots lava all over a medium city. The Tornado could go from a tiny twister to a very wide one, and it should survive over water. Waterspouts exist, they are just weaker than land tornadoes. The Fire should vary between a small house fire and a raging forest fire-type-thing that can wipe out a whole city. The UFO could vary its Independence Day-style area effect beam and spout more or less small UFOs. The Lightning could be more intense; what is in the game now should be a 1 on a 1-10 scale because my experience is that it is a joke disaster.

I want several new ones too. First, we need a button that causes a Nuclear Meltdown. It would be nice to bring back the Whirlpool from SC3K as well as the Hurricane or Flood from SC2K. A Tsunami would be an acceptable replacement for the aforementioned water-based disasters. An Air Strike could be a good one, which calls in some Jet Fighters like those from Area 5.1to bomb your city. (This could cause a U-Drive-It mission to fly a Jet FIghter or UFO to defend your city from the attackers.) A button that causes an angry mob to Riot would be nice. There could also be multiple disasters such as a Meteor Swarm, Multiple Fires, or Tornado Superstorm.

I wish I knew how to make all of this happen!

you can make a nuclear meltdown by either waiting for it to reach the end of its life or by setting it on fire. sometimes it just burns down and other times it will explode.

Quaternus: The Tornado Superstorm you can do. Just spawn a tornado, then go back and click on the tornado picture in the disasters. It will let you make another. Just keep doing it really fast and your small towns would be in ruins in no time!

Same thing for many Meteors at once, and robot things, and fires I think.

Riots can happen, but they're small and you can't spawn them or anything.

I would LOVE a large flood or tsunami.

Nuclear meltdown happen. Cut off power to a nuke power plant, then set it on fire and when it burns down, it explodes. Or so I've heard. If you put them in clusters they can go on and on, destroying whole cities.

i would also love bigger volcanoes and meteors.

I would change the earthquake if I could to something that causes landslides, fires, volcanoes, fissures, and tsunamis. it would alsoo be cool to have earthquake-proof buildings.

I'm not even sure if it's possible to make new disasters or change them. You'd have to ask someone with more experience.

Good Luck!

I would REALLY like to see a fairly realistica nuclear explosion added as a non-random button disaster. Obviously this isn't the sort of thing Maxis or EA would want to include for various, good reasons, but this is one reason why mod communities thrive.

I'm not so interested building cities just to nuke them, but in rebuilding in the aftermath, as there are huge and unique problems to overcome.

I'd be perfectly happy with a very scaled-up meteor combined with earthquake effects that creates a deformed crater, causes building collapses and starts fires within a large radius, perhaps some EMP effects that ruin power lines and plants, and leaves radiation tiles around ground zero for a few game-years (technically, most nukes wouldn't, but what the heck)

The crater size, and the fire/collapse radius could be easily calculated from available data to make it realistic. If it could be available in a range of yields with ground or airburst, all the better.

Heck, just call it an "Atomic Comet" to sidestep the whole war/terrorism issue. Please?

At the very least, couldn't the meteor just be scaled up a ton?

Alternatively, I may just have to create a scenario where something like that has just happend, but that wouldn't be quite as good.

I hate to bust everyone's bubble, but if i recall, this topic has been covered NUMEROUS times since the start of SC4(even by myself).

It won't work by modding with iLive; oh no. You need to mod the .exe of SC4...and I believe that itself brings on a slew of legal issues.

Yep everything you said is Spot on. There are LOTS of disaster request threads and im going to tell you now that disaters cannot and will not be made. They cannot be modded either, with two exceptions. The only disaters that can be changed without exe modification is the Volcano and Earthquake disasters. Thats it nothing else.

Ah, we have a winner here.

I've always wanted to mod the volcano. Got an example, by chance? 3.gif

EDIT: It happens I've found a riot exemplar. It also has the 'MousePick Over Water'...perhaps implying this may also work.

I've added a make shift Item Icon and Item order exemplar, but nothings happening.

Any possible way might might get this baby to work?

Disaster idea:

1. Where are the Hurricanes, Flash Floods, Snow Storms, Dust Storms, Heavy Winds, Heavy Rain, and men made ones such as Riots, Missiles, and Rockets.

2. When there are fires cause by riots to tall buildings in my city; is there anyway to make it just burn the building and not collapse?

3. In an disaster, can roads and highways be show all broken up and not with an Street Dead End Road like if I stopped building roads?

Thank You and Keep Up the Great Work.

I doubt Maxis would even care about someone modifying the exe. They haven't worked on it in ages, even when they should have, like they tossed it aside and just focus on that not so great "societies" game. I was hoping for simcity 5 or something.

Anyhow, if it's even possible, I think someone should go for it, do SOMETHING to add/change some disasters, would be neat. Especially water related ones.

Alex opines:

"I doubt Maxis would even care about someone modifying the exe."

Um, I think they would care very much, Alex.  Computer code is proprietary and protected under copyright law.  Maxis/EA controls the copyrights for the code inside the .exe and if anyone messes with it without explicit written permission of Maxis/EA, well first offense for copyright infringement is $10,000 US dollars (not Simoleans).  Maxis/EA was kind enough to provide us players with all kinds of tools that allow us to customize the game in ways few, if any, other game developers or manufacturers do, so rather than spending time and effort dwelling on illegally busting into thier toybox, I think it's wiser to be grateful for the toys we currently have.

If you, personally, are disappointed with the existing disasters menu, I suggest you address your complaints to Maxis/EA directly rather than using a third party fan site to encourage players into criminal activity.  In RL, such actions are considered "abetting" and could get you into a whole heap of trouble.  Lucky for you, persistance in such postings here on St may only get you banned.

I really want Tsunamis, floods, hurricanes. Also, for the earthquake to damage more than only the fault line, and to be able to edit/choose where you want your earthquake "line" to be. Would also be cool to be able to control the magnitude of the earthquake without having to "keep pressing for biggest magnitude", barely changes anything.

Hope someone could do it, sad that even in Simcity 2013 there aren't any floods or Tsunamis which are wanted so much.

In SC4 the "Up26x8_WindPower_1F45" power station that uses the "BatesMotel" building on a concrete pad can produce a nice explosion.  I had 3 of them blow up at the same time.  They're labeled "Cheap to build and squeaky clean", $50 .  The plant condition was 100% before the event.  The sky turned orange then BOOM, 3 craters and a large very large tile was covered in radiation.  I had just openned up the city and a few minutes later, abandoned.  Lucky I had made a backup the night before.

Long and short, making new disasters may simply not be possible to do. Either way it would be a lot of work and may require messing with the main .exe. In practical terms that means the best you are likely to see is slight modifications to how the current ones work.

To my knowledge no such mods exist, probably for the reasons stated previously, hence no one has responded to this request.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

If you want add a/some disaster(s), you don't need to modify the exe (which is illegal). You just create a DLL using a framework, such as Simmaster DLL framework. However, at this time no a DLL framework which 100% (or 80/90%) completed. You need explore the game system to make some disasters.

Thanks.

Whilst I understand it's technically possible to create such a .dll, that's much like saying if you want to live on the moon, you just need to hire a rocket to go there and build a home. In theory yes you could do it, but practically speaking, most people would have little to no chance of making it a reality.

Currently SimMaster07 is the only person with sufficient knowledge to make .dll's for SC4. If you are an expert in C, Assembler and willing to put the time in, great, have at it. But if you are not, no amount of desire will be enough to make such a mod. So back in the real world, that means we're not likely to see any such mods still.

this is just a massive pipedream, this is not like Civ 5 where everything is XML and Python. SimCity 4 is a difficult game to modify. The way it tends to be is its very difficult to add something in that wasn't already there. You can wish all you want but its just not possible.
