Fan-blooming-tastic! I love it! Not only did it not totally offend me with carnival colours, it also didn't leave me at one oblique angle to ponder what it could be like - the video showed me what it would be like to see the city from many angles! I L O V E the landscape textures, I love the gritty R E A L I S M of the cityscape. Most of all, I L O V E the fact that you used my idea of going from a WORLD view to the cities!!! AWESOME! I also messaged on the CitiesXL site, but I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited about this game after the disappointment and non-event that was SC:S.

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S Monte Cristo, Phillippe et al for a F A N T A S T I C 1st trailer. As the song says, 'the only way is up' and W H O A dude, that's some heights you're going to hit!

@rebelfish: greaat idea! I would love a plan phase. One time I ahd a nice city of 50,000 or so, and was zoning high-dens residential over my nice suburbs and then my mouse slipped out of my hand. It pulled the zoning roight over my downtown and destroyed the vwhole thing! I really wish there was a plan button!

@cleaner475: Yes, I hate it when I decide "the base doesn't fit with the surroundings" or something, it drives me crazy.

I sometimes have to click open landmark menu, then casually go to the bathroom, then come back and wait... wait... wait... for it to come up. Then I mess up and accidentally bulldoze... ugh. I hope they have a customizable menu. It would save time being able to, say, open the water transportation, then deciding you want a folder for PEG's seaport, or one for Jeronij's seawalls, or something like that. And even a folder that deposits miscllaneous, like ploppable trees rather than filling the landmark menu with 1200 buildings...

The trailer is looking great, the overall game is looking greater, and when it comes out it will be the greatest!!!!! Maybe...

My big question is how customizable will this game be? It should come with something like the "BAT". That is what has kept sc4 so playable for so long and these guys are future thinking then they should be planning something like that.

Unless this game has a wide variety of road types, and REALISTIC ROAD LINES.... I mean WHAT ARE YOU THINKING WITH THE WHITE DOTTED LINES EVERYWHERE??? HOW THE HECK IS THAT REALISTIC???????

And if you're gonna add a ton of detail to the cars, make them look modern and realistic as well.

    Hi BackRoads,

That's realistic if you live in Europe 4.gif but you shouldn't be worried about this... You'll have your yellow continuous lines on roads too for the US people 2.gif

    1. White lines are perfectly realistic for European roads.

    2. Read dasilva's post and calm down.

    3. Please don't post in all CAPS like that. Seriously, you've been here since 2004 so you've had time to review the rules.

This game does look to be absolutely fantastic with its scope.

Its the SimCity I've always wanted, without all EA's corporate watering down the original to pretty much force players to buy expansions (the Sims anyone?), by the looks of it.

I hope landscapes are changeable, so we can add mountains, lakes, rivers and jungles.

When I get this game, id actually make countries, each country having a distinct flavour, so modding is necessary to make latin/european style buildings and asian ones too.

I await updates with a napkin to wipe my drool up when they arrive hehe

How beautiful it is! *dies* 9.gif

I hope there will be alot of European style buildings, since I love building European cities. And asian buildings. Essentially like Sc3000k only 3d and superbly awesome. 3.gif

Pretty Cool. I have another question though, in SC4, you have UDI ( U  (YOU) DRIVE IT) mode ( I think thats what is called)  and now the question, does CitesXL have something similar to that? I like the way it expresses independence, and I now wonder if this new game will have something similar. Also, does this have diffrent types of roadway (highway, avenue, road, street, etc.)?  I like to create cool looking pieces of transportation, and I'm wondering if this will  have some diffrent pieces of roadway. Thanks.1.gif

I love City XL graphic. I hope that City XL's traffic simulator only finds the fastest route, and can also calculate the traffic outside of the city, so the enternal commuter problem and disappering commuter problem won't show up. There is one question, can game use muti processor cores?

I bet City XL is going to make all the EA's city building games look inferior and crappy.

Nice to see a developer that actually bothers with some localisation.

I care a lot about modabilty. There is enough freedom in SC4 that I can litterally create anything I want. It may be a lot work, but there are no structures in my city that I can't BAT if I need them and when there is no puzzle piece for the road layout I want to make, I can make my own new puzzle piece.

    Me too.2.gifquote>

I see your point, but then why aren't there any "burbs" with non square lots? That's kind of a bad sign.

Actually, I don't even see any rectangular lots. That's really bad.quote>

I don't get this. Surely the picture says "no!"? What this image shows is that, yes, you can build curved or diagonal roads, but you cannot put buildings on them/building will ignore them. If you want buildings to grow, you need to make square grids.

It's a shame, but to be honest I don't mind having grid cities that much. What bothers me is that they've tried to lie about it. After the let down that was Societies it makes you wonder if this is going to be all about the graphics and not at all about any kind of sophisticated gameplay engine (which is, after all, what would make the game worth playing).

I suppose in order to get the buildings growing on non-grid roads you'd have to move the city organism away from a kind of block/lot-based model to one that grows organically out from the roads (like real cities do, or did, at least in Europe). Do away with the idea of a block and let the computer try to cram buildings into whatever space is available... maybe it's an idea for the sequel.

Sorry to disapoint you amos2000 but we haven't been lying at all to you. Everything that has been said is still true 2.gif

We actually never said specifically that buildings would grow on non square grids but now I officially tell you: THEY WILL! 3.gif

They already mentioned that it wouldn't be available for Mac because it would be too expensive to develop for more than one platform. Considering how bad console ports of simulation games are, it is almost positive that they won't be releasing it for anything but the PC.

I'm pretty sure that for the foreseeable future Cities XL will only be available on PC. If the game does really, really well... maybe... just maybe you'll see a port to a different system. I'd rather Monte Cristo stick to supporting CitiesXL PC once its released rather than working on something else.

I just saw some videos and screenshots for Cities XL... they look amazing. I am politely "salivating" or (drooling) to get my hands on this game. Is there any date for releasing the game???

Ive not seen the video, but from the look of the pictures, it looks like your using a rather basic shader for the landscape with texture weighting dependant on the height of the land. I would really advise against this, I know its much easier to do this sort of land, but its a bit unrealistic. Maybe use multi passes and create some random texturing function when the city is first created, so the landscape textures are more 'realistic'
