FN + Home/End doesn't work for me. That just moves the map around.

Just to be clear here, on your MK850 you don't need the "Fn" key, JUST the Home or End key to rotate the piece.
Also, using Fn + Home/End shouldn't move the map around, that's what the arrow keys do.

So if the home/end key is still not working, and adding Fn moves the map around,
maybe check if you have some key-mapping or additional configurations going on.

Sorry. I don't mean tabbing through various pieces. I mean rotating pieces before placing them.

Try Fn + left or right arrow keys. See if that works for you. That works for me, but I'm on a Macbook.

Hmm. I can confirm Home and End work fine on my mac mini with a Logitech MK540.

Do these shortcuts work for you?

It doesn't appear so. I'm not quite sure how to approach troubleshooting the issue.

I wish there were a way I could change hotkeys in SimCity 4.

It doesn't. That's pretty much the stock advice, and for some reason, it doesn't work. It actually does nothing (that I can tell) in the game. If I'm not using FN, UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT moves the map around. When holding FN, nothing happens.

Do I remember correctly the trouble is you cannot rotate things on the cursor for orientation? I believe you specifically mentioned NAM items, but is this also for civic buildings? I've managed to mod rotating buildings to use H and J, but that still doesn't work for highway intersections on the cursor.

You can change hotkeys by creating a DAT plugin that overrides one or more of the game's KEYCFG files, but I don't know how to do that on a Mac.

I can't rotate civic buildings or NAM items—this limitation is not specific to NAM pieces. For the most part, I've played around with this limitation, but I'd love to be able to.

If this works, it'll at least give you the ploppable buildings rotation. And, it could be other keys. I just grabbed H and J as a test.

Do I just drop this in the plugins folder?

Yes. Anywhere in Plugins will be fine as this isn't the sort of thing anyone else has likely made an override for. The only thing which might inhibit it is if you are at the Mac limit for the number of plugins.

This works for buildings! Thank you!

However, it doesn't want to shift around road pieces. Either way, this is a big upgrade, and I appreciate that. I guess I'm stuck not being able to do the more intricate detail work until I find a solution for rotating Maxis and NAM pieces.

Woot! And you're welcome. At least one part of your game is now less of a hassle. *:)

Btw, if you do want some other keys besides H and J, that's easy to change. (As it is, you lose H to put a medical clinic on your cursor. J didn't do anything to begin with, although Jail would've made sense.)

Yeah, it's now out of my league as I simply changed the entries for Home and End to H and J. Theoretically, that should work for road pieces too, but my own testing showed it didn't either. Our only hope is if someone can find the exact function codes those use and make an override some other way or make those visible to the KEYCFG entry.

I wonder if those could be separated out to each have their own menu item? Sure, they put them in Tab Rings for convenience and consolidation, but with your situation, it'd be worth the extra scrolling in the transport menu. (This is prolly out of my modding league as I don't understand how Tab Rings are even accomplished. * )

Edit: I wasn't thinking right. This would be to avoid the Tab-Ring and I suddenly recalled that's already ok. You can cycle thru the pieces, just not rotate them on the cursor. So, I'm completely out of ideas.

I do appreciate your effort. Hopefully, someone else will run across this post and has solved my exact, seemingly unique issue 😭

I assume you already tried this, but what about the PgDown/PgUp keys? That's what Fn+left/right arrow (what turns NAM pieces and buildings for me) tracks to on my M1 MacBook Pro (standard keyboard).

Keep in mind that for NAM pieces, sometimes you won't be able to rotate them in the direction you want (or at all) if the network around it isn't conductive to that.

Unfortunately, I have tried that. I've tried a lot of random combinations as well, but haven't gotten to the point where I'm trying every possible combination and documenting it to make sure I find it.

I can't even rotate the starter pieces, so I know something is wrong.

That is most unusual.

  1. Do you have the Steam or the App Store version? Maybe there's some difference in the versions -- I have the App Store version.
  2. Can you rotate pieces with the standard MBP keyboard? (It should be Fn + left/right arrow there)
  3. Would you please go to the Keyboard Viewer and take a screenshot? If you can't find it, it should be in the input menu on the top right corner of your screen, and you can enable that menu by going to System Settings/Keyboard/"Input Sources" under "Text Input" and then "Show Input menu in menu bar". I want to make sure that, when you press the PgUp/Down key on your keyboard, it's actually mapped to PgUp/Down. You may need to take more than one screenshot, since the Keyboard Viewer changes as you press Fn (or Shift, Ctrl or Alt, for that matter).

(This is the Keyboard Viewer and I have pressed the Fn key. You can see that PgUp/Down are represented by diagonal lines)

FWIW, I used to have the App Store version and now I have the Steam version and it's the same in both versions.

Forgive me if you already addressed this, but are you using a program called DoubleCommand with the settting “PC style Home & End keys” enabled? Back when I had to use a PC keyboard on my Mac, I had this very problem and it turned out that's what was causing it. (I had totally forgotten about it until I was reading back through old stuff I had posted on here ages ago.) (Edit: another key remapper may possibly do the same thing and have the same issue)
