No one has replied to this topic over a year, I must revive it.  (CPR)

Anyways, I love and miss all the old Disney, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon TV shows.  They are SO MUCH better than what is on today.  Most of what is on today on those stations are real-life and "reality" shows.  I better stop before I rant even more.  Here are some of my favorite shows.

Dexter's Laboratory

Rugrats

Hey Arnold

Scooby Doo (the old ones)

Angry Beavers

Animaniacs

Sonic

Are You Afraid of the Dark?  (not a cartoon, but still great, used to scare me so much)

Ed, Edd, and Eddy

All That

The Amanda Show

Legends of the Hidden Temple (I know this was a game show.  I love to look at all the "new" prizes)

...and many others

At the moment, I am watching the original Transformers.  When I was little, I never really payed attention to the show and action figures.  But after watching the second movie that came out, I bought the first one and then decided on YouTube one day to watch the start of it all, the G1 Series.  I have also seen a couple episodes of the new show.  Although it is different, it isn't as good as the first one.  The new one is too "anime" for me.  You can't go wrong going "back to basics" sometimes.

Animaniacs rocked, how many of today's cartoons would have Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition as background music? They had a lot of humor directed at the adults, kids aren't going to know who Henry Kissinger is. Very funny, but also smarter than most. Definitely a winner!

Can't beat '40s-'50s Tom & Jerry. MGM stopped making them when they closed their animation dept. in 1959. Early episodes with Spike the bulldog ("Lissen, pussycat...") were voiced by Mel Blanc of Bugs Bunny fame. The MGM ones got Oscar nominations and even won. H/B started them back up in '62 or so, they sucked ever after. The psychedelic 'space' ones were the worst.

Edit: Dr John won a Grammy some years back, I believe, for his remake of Is You Is (Or Is You Aint') My Baby, the song featuring Tom on a stand-up bass in one of my favorite episodes.

Other than that, I feel bad for today's kids with the poor quality of cartoons. It looks like every animation co. hired the worst imitator of Picasso ever, and had him do all the art after a double dose of his drug of choice. All this cubism and surrealism is better on canvas than TV, IMHO.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

Well, I guess I'll start from my early childhood and move on up.

As a youngster, Popeye.  I could never get enough of all the various ways Popeye overcame Brutus/Bluto with contents of a can of spinach.  I certainly never understood  what either Popeye or Bluto/Brutus saw in Olive Oyl.

Star Blazers checks in next.  One day, the owners of this series may release Star Blazers on DVD for a REASONABLE price.  The story was compelling, but I was hooked on the Wave Motion Gun.  I spent many  a day in school drawing the Spaceship Yamato in profile.  I am quite thankful to mas71 for releasing the it to the STEX.

G-Force, a.k.a. Battle of the Planets, a.k.a. Gatchaman Science Ninja Team was another early morning love child of mine.  I loved watching the team change with the command "G-Force Transform" and the deployment of the Phoenix.

Dungeons and Dragons, the story of teenages pulled into the world realm of Dungeons and Dragons after riding an amusement park ride, dominated many a Saturday morning.

"Activate interlock, dynatherms connected, infracells up, megathrusters are go... Lets go Voltron Force!"  I really think this says it all, along with "Form blazing sword!"  I loved Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

More than meets the eye!  Doesn't that statement say it all as well?  Transformers, baby!  Optimus Prime with perhaps the best voice in cartoon history!  His arch nemesis, Megatron.  The would-be-leader of the Decepticons, the ambitious Star Scream and who can forget Soundwave.

Yo Joe, the battle cry of America's highly trained special mission force.  Its mission, to defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless, terrorist organization determined to rule the world! G.I. Joe had me after The Mass Device.  I never had a favorite G.I. Joe character Until Sargent Slaughter made his debut.

As we move into the 90s, Batman: The Animated Series, Spider-man and X-Men ruled the day.  They were followed by Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League.

Other cartoons deserving honorable mention include:

The Flinstones

The Jetson

Tom and Jerry

Smurfs (As much as I hate to admit it)

Wacky Races

Johnny Quest

Thundarr the Barbarian

Scooby Doo: Where are you?

The Perils of Penelope Pitstop

Disney's Steamboat Willie (ancestore of M. Mouse).

Woody Woodpecker

Tom & Jerry

Bugs Bunny and other Warner things but not Porky Pig.

Bob Clampet stuff.  Not great animation but I liked Cecil the seasick sea serpent.

Recent stuff:

Pink Panther

Road Runner

Looney Tunes and the Fairly Oddparents are my faves, if I ever have children I won't want them to watch the new stuff that is out. At least Looney Tunes and Oddparents had good messages.

Naturally. There's a new crop of kids. E.e.e.h What's up, Doc?

The BB cartoon I most enjoy has Elmer as Siegfried and Bugs as Brunhilde in "Kill the Wabbit".

When I was little, i didn't quite understand the nature behind "Whats Opera, Doc". Now that I'm older I find the end sad. But the darkest cartoon I saw was a cartoon by Walt Disney. It's an old Anti-Nazi film that was used as propaganda to turn children against Nazism. Here, like before, I didn't quite understand how the Nazis lived. But when my dad showed the film, it opened my eyes to how awful Hitler's regime must have been to all the citizens who lived in Germany at the time: Hitler's Education for Death

I don't know if anyone watched the show ReBoot, but that show was awesome. Still watch it whenever I get the chance. Oh, and Beast Wars was an epic show as well.

That's too bad about Bugs Bunny. Jack Warner must be spinning in his grave.

I think this is an indication of the creative bankruptcy of Hollywood.
