  1. Galactic Civilizations 3

Anybody else playing this. Are you having a hard enough time pulling away like me? I love it so far and am very pleased with Stardock on this release. Already trying to figure out how many ways I can break the Galactic economy in order to secure victory.
  2. Should parents ever worry about Minecraft?

I think parents should be worried about their kids and not the external factors. "Have you talked to your children about Minecraft?" "If you have talked to your children about Minecraft, did you listen?" Seriously with everything going on these days you really have to talk to people, especially those little versions that we hope you have created and nurtured in the hope of turning them into something cool and functional. If you want to understand something talk about it and see if you can have them show you what it's all about. Do feel free to say what your feelings are in regards to this and do encourage them to talk about their feelings too. if you don't like a certain direction you also cant just tell them to do it; you almost always need to go on the adventure into something new with them. As far as Minecraft goes; it's awesome; I love it; I played the tar out of it and am on a break; but I still like it since yes it is the closest electronically interactive framework that has capture the joy that I feel when creating with art or Lego.
  3. Current teen lingo?

Just for clarification I subscribe to the belief that YOLO stands for "You Obviously Love Owls." I work with youth so new lingo is put to challenge in my presence. I ask them to use it in a sentence, provide a definition, would they use it in an employment interview, would they put it on a tshirt, would they eat it on a boat, with a goat? I find my vocabulary to be very fluid as a person though and seem to mish mash and inventify words with some regularity. I seem to get away with it moreso with younger or easygoing folk; I feel this has a lot to do with the magic of saying more through intonation and body language.
  4. Windows 10 to be the last edition of Windows.

I'd be whole hog on Linux except that I am a gamer and like to play much of the new hotness that comes out. I tried going with Ubuntu and really liked it but in the end I was straight up unable to play a number of games I consider critical in my library. I look forward to the day that Linux is par or better from a gamer's standpoint. If MS goes to a subscription fee then I will be one of those who can no longer afford to use it. I consider myself to be part of a privileged middle-class but this is because I am able to cover my bills, buy games and eat take out food once in awhile.
  5. Canadian Politics

A week goes by and we are all still here in Alberta. The letters to the editor are rife with doomsayers these days. A petition was started to oust an NDP MLA the day after the election too bad those people seemed to miss out voting someone else into that position. Voter turn out was at a record high of 56%, as far as recent times go. The carcass being autopsied this week isn't the Alberta, Canadian or even world economy as some would havve you believe; it's just the rotted unflattering husk of the PC party. Best new meme out it all though is a picture of Steven Harper smiling with the thumbs up, surrounded by an orange border with a heading that says "Proud to be from NDP country."
  6. Our modern world

Can we expose them to horror like making their own fun, playing in traffic, earning a pittance sized allowance through chores that they have to save up for the things they want. I remember getting $1 per week if I did all my chores; it took me roughly 3 months to save up to buy the LEGO set I wanted. My mom also punished me for foolishness like leaving my toys out in the backyard; she told me someone must have stolen them; I found them in a box in the basement 10 years later.
  7. Canadian Politics

Well the pre-season is happening right now in Alberta. The recent PC budget has ruffled many feathers for putting more taxes on the average working citizen, less service for all and hardly a sniffle for higher income earners as well as corporations. I sort of hope we can show some cracks in the conservative power base that the rest of the country can see.
  8. Can Evil be Copyrighted?

If the publisher wins it seems it would be setting a legal precedence for writers to be denied compensation for their work if the publisher finds anything objectionable about the content or the author themselves. This would be opening a door for discrimination of people and exploitation of creative artists. The other bit in the article about the biographer stating that private persons should not be in charge of important historical document is valid but funny. It is simply too bad for him that some government or historical society haven't managed to buy the documents from the estate yet.
  9. Our modern world

I understand the image side of phonership even though I don't ascribe to it; in many professions today it is an indispensable business tool. As far as dating goes, that's rough. I don't understand it as I feel like I would maniacally cackle at a prospective partner trying to assert some form of higher class incompatibility through that; In my head I see them being mortified, embarassed and hopefully unhorsed. @ A Nonny Moose: The kids in these programs were coming out with their schools for a week of outdoor school. I have so far had students for programs lasting as long as 8 weeks and that is a really long period of time in outdoor programming.
  10. Educatering Doesn't Pay

I teach but my classroom is usually out in the wilderness. My commentary choices stem more from a cynical, possibly dystopian, world view where I feel many things would be able to improve if we faced more challenge and adversity. I am currently stepping away from educational roles because my views of the world are starting to be more strongly divergent to many organizations that want me to ply my trade. A future possibility for me is becoming an educational consultant for the fields I have expertise in; the hope of this would be to have people seek me out to make change for the better where I can.
  11. The biggest point that the article raised for me is regarding the issue of consent by saying that a girl who says no is the one you want. "No means no." is just the tip of the iceberg in this as many sex positive people I know, including myself, are pushing forward the message of "Yes means Yes." There are even campaigns showing up with the postered phrase "Just because she isn't saying No doesn't men she is saying yes." The abstinence only style of education isn't just spreading misinformation it is failing to provide people with the basic skills to negotiate and maintain healthy relationships.
  12. Our modern world

I have been working with children for a number of years now in the outdoor education field and I can say that all hope is not lost but the kids should have a good sense of adventure instilled in them. Once after a week in the mountains with a group of school kids we were talking about how the week went for them. One of them admitted to the group that they were really nervous about not being able to play on their Xbox for a whole week but they were really glad they didn't have it because they would have missed out on discovering all the cool stuff they were doing outside that week.
  13. http://www.thestranger.com/features/feature/2015/04/15/22062331/i-sat-in-on-my-sons-sex-ed-class-and-i-was-shocked-by-what-i-heard It seems like the abstinence-only sex education debate is coming into season with the number of articles I have seen lately. This story is entertaining and I feel that it highlights why this issue is something that needs to be addressed and rethought. I have very strong thoughts about this topic which fall close to the author's but I can't confirm all of them. I am an active supporter of sex-positive education and the importance of teaching inclusive interpersonal relationship skills. I want everyone who wishes to discuss the topic here to feel accepted and included regardless of what opinion they hold. I won't make assumptions about anyone; I will respectfully ask for clarification on any point made that I don't understand; I will be respectful in any challenges I make to any points raised and I will respond to any challenges made in a respectful manner; I hope everyone else follows my example or betters it. Welcome. Who would like to start?
  14. Educatering Doesn't Pay

Failure, attrition, personal doom need to be apart of society because everything is bureaucratically out of control and going to lead us to Armageddon. I freely admit that my successful longevity into the form of independent adulthood I am currently enjoying is a result of many of these things. I am now able to see the forest and the trees as it were and often wonder if I will see the collapse of society as we know it. Let people fail, struggle get sick, become injured, rescue and help themselves. The case here seems to be people with good intentions and the wrong mentality trying to throw money at a problem to make it go away. Feels like installing plate glass windows with a hammer.
  15. OMG! My doll has finally arrived! I'm so excited!

It is pleasing to see that this thread is still hopping around.
