That's easy, Melbourne. Note, I may be more than a little bit biased here :-) Sydney's far too fast and focused on business. Melbourne's a much more laid back and easygoing place to live.

What's more interesting is that apparantly the people of Adelaide think there's this big rivalry between Melbourne and Adelaide over which is the better city. I've never met anyone in Melbourne who has ever heard of this rivalry though......

I live in Melbourne and only because I live here, I can't say no... It is the best place to live. So many people say it. Although that doesn't mean Sydney is crap, it's still good. Infact, there are a lot of things that I like about Sydney. For example: The infastructure (railways, road networks etc) is so much more exciting than Melbourne. The roads and streets wind all over the district, but in Melbourne, there is a giant grid that most suburban roads follow (have a look, you'll see). But that is only from a road/rail-geek's point of view...

There is much to love about both, but I think Melbourne wins.... Period.

I'd say Melbourne as someone already mentioned it's more laid back and not so focused on business and to me a laid back city seems more ideal. Though n the end, Brisbane is the best out of all11.gif

Haljackey i never realised that the rivalry between the two cities were that big but im sure they did have problems deciding which city should be the capital. In the end Canberra flew in and took the crown which settled that problem.

Canberra was purposely built for that very reason. It wasn't already there. Anyway, Melbourne had been the capital for the longest (I think...) so, nyah!

Brisbane is pretty cool though...

i agree with bendy with Melbourne being a laid back city, although i live in Melbourne i still would prefer Melbourne over Sydney. I believe it is easier to get around Melbourne, than Sydney. The suburbs of Melbourne are spread out, and Melbourne is much more affordable to live in than Sydney

haljackey: When the fedeartion occured in 1901, they had to build a capital city between Melbourne and Sydney. I think Canberra took 12 years to build, and in those 12 years Melbourne was the capital of Australia. I think that is why Sydneysiders have something against Melburnians, because we got the title of Capital City.

I would go for Meblourne on this one, but not just because I live there. As many have already said, Melbourne is much more laid back, with less hustle-bustle and more culture. However, I like the looks of Sydney's CBD better.

Much of this rivalry is aired by the rival that feels it has more to lose from the comparison. While I prefer Melbourne over Sydney, I feel, like a lot of other people here, that Sydney captures people's attention and imagination because of its iconic status - bridge, opera house harbour etc, whereas Melbourne, which has so much to offer, is often overlooked internationally because it doesn't have such symbolic status. So while you might hear Sydneysiders comment on the rivalry, it is probably kept alive by Melbournians who sometimes feel that the world has its eyes on Sydney, when it would do well to cast a glance at Melbourne from time to time as well.

Possibly the same kind of thing is going on between Melbourne and Adelaide, but the other way around.

I ve been to both and i have to say Melbourne. Its such a wonderful city with all the trams running everywhere. Sydney is overrated and Melbourne should get the recognition it deserves.

Heres picks i took for comparison

Sydney, of course. Partly biased due to a closer affiliation with the city. I have been to Melbourne a couple of times, and I do like aspects of the city, I find it is 'too' laid back for a city to be appealing. I prefer Sydney with its nice combination of bustle and tranquility, and the variety of bays around the harbour, with skyscraper development around some, while others seem set to live eternity in relaxed idyll by the waters. Melbourne is nice to wander around to find those little cafes and restaurants, but ultimately, it doesn't have enough to hold my interest to want to live there.

Melbourne has some beautiful buildings and scrapers... I just love the Eureka Tower. From the East it looks like a very rigid tower but from the south you can see all the different angles that make it a very cool building.

Melbourne has a better atmosphere than Sydney. It's just more relaxed down here.

top melbourne, bottom sydney. Those two cities are well very different of themselves. For a city without a major known landmark like Melbourne, the Yarra River compliments it very well. And the Rialto towers are gems! I wish to see in SC4 one day. Is it true theres a bathroom with windows so you can see the entire view while going?

Yep, its true. The restaurant at the top of the Sofitel Melbourne has a bathroom with a glass wall, so you can see the city even when nature calls 2.gif

Sydney is my favourite(possible bias). It has world recognition becuase it is so beautiful and the city compliments the harbour and everything where as Melbourne is really flat but they make up for it it with culture and the buildings. Hence why Melbourne's trnasport is better than ours, we have to deal witth some pretty hilly terrain.

P.S if any ones says Aus Open and F1 racing for Melbourne

F1 racing was stolen from Adelaide in 1996(Hence the rivalry?)

Aus Open stolen from White City, Sydney althought i don't know when.

    The Canberra thing.

Melbourne was capital in 1901 after Federation(many reasons for this like a gold rush etc)

They choose a spot that was halfway between Melbourne and Sydney to ease rivalry for a new capital somewhere between 1901  and 1920(exact dates i can't remember)

Because of two world wars there wasn't much money for construction and it wasn't untilt he 40's and 50's that most was finished. Melbourne was cap for 27 years i think.

Please correct me if i'm wrong and for the F1 and Aus Open i was only brining to you attention that Melbourne did not always have them. I would love to see them return to their former cities.

I lived in both cites. Melbourne for 2 years & Sydney for 12 years. Have been in & around London now for about 13/14 years.

I can say that I much prefer Sydney by far. Melbourne's pleasant, but has so little going on in comparison to Sydney.

I suppose it depends on what you want to do.

I like the life & busy nature of the city. Plus the fact there's so many decent beaches in close proximity is a major bonus for me.

So I gotta go for Sydney.

Melbourne should be more hilly, especially in the eastern suburbs, and Sydney's lack of transportation is only because of lack of service.

P.S. I know this thread is two years old

I actually live in Sydney and I have lived in Melbourne. Melbourne has a far more efficient transport system where as Sydney's transport in in a state of near collapse. Sydney has far more crime and is way over-priced, Melbourne is better ran. However, both need to watch out as Brisbane might pinch the top spot as Australia's best city.

As for Canberra, it is allegedly "planned", a plan based on an assumption that oil would be cheap for ever (not now), it desperatly needs effective public transport. Canberra is also the country's only "true" inland city (other claimants are actually country towns).

Sydney is fantastic. I spent two summers there as en exchange student. Never been to Melbourne, but what from what I unstood at the time... (I was there in 96 and 97) Melbourne had a city law restricting the construction of skyscrapers to certain areas, resulting in an arc of skyscrapers and thus a very nice skyline. Sydney is a mass of modern buildings and a great city centre. But, having only been to one city, I can't justly pick a favourite. I imagine that Melbourne has it's own attributes, but being from the US I think I'd find it just as great as Sydney. Australia was a paradise in my eyes, and any part of it would be seen so in my opinion. (I spent some time in the bush as well, so I understand the vastness of the country... a little.)

p.s. anyone ever frequent the Royal Hotel in Paddington? That's where I used to work.

Melbourne Is A Better City Than Eny Outher City On The Face Of Earth (Maybe In Tie With Dubai (Ha That Rimes) Sorry About Spelling) i just don't say that becouse i live there its becouse of the multicultuisim (Big Word) It Has A China Town, Arabic Town, Vietnam Towen, And A SriLanka Town ( Hampton Park Near Where I Live) The Only Thing About Melbourne Is The Monash Freeway Its Just Paked The Call It The Monash Carpark. I Live In Narre And It Takes An Hour And A Half To Get To The City. Plus Have You Seen The Skyline Talking Bout The Best Thing Youve Seen And Docklands Have The Nissest Buildings Than SouthBank Than The CBD
