SYDNEY VS MELBOURNE

MY OPINION

Ooh i've been to melbourne twice and sydney thrice before (Brizzy and the Gold Coast as well). I'm in Sydney now. I must say both cities have their points (Brizzy as well haha). Sydney has its problems (a huge plethora of them by the way);

1) Transport Infrastructure problems seem to take the trophy. I mean just last week, for example, a very busy and important motorway tunnel shut down, and not for the first time.

2) Housing prices are skyrocketing-ly high (mind you, renting here can give you a really big hole in your pocket). Even house prices in the western suburbs (far from the main CBD) are high, and rising.

3) The state government is in a crisis. Which means many projects to improve the way things are are either going to be scaled down, or cancelled indefinitely.

4) The weather here is like a game. A few days ago it was hovering near 30deg C and yesterday its was back to 15. What gives?? In this few days (mind you, its spring now), I've seen summer and winter. And the winds here can blow the hair off your head. Oh. Not really haha.

Yet IMHO SYD wins (in my books anyway)!! I find melbourne to be wanting of the kind of character sydney has, like a few before me have said. Yeah the problems are many, but they don't break the city. In fact, I think they GIVE the city character, in a manner of speaking. I just love going up to the top floor of my place in the eastern suburbs, looking out and seeing the sea on one side, the CBD with Sydney Tower in the middle, and the suburbs stretching out to the far west mist of the blue mountains. Theres great terrain as well. Beaches are only a walk away. And the cliffs there are great vantage points to look out as well. There are many hills which the houses and streets seem to just swallow. The roads and railways here all seem to wind around haphazardly, yet very elegantly organic. if you take a bus on a busy main route, you might go into small streets (though many are called avenues, which I have no idea why) and curve around to main roads so unexpectedly, and up hills and down steep slopes. And the view does not get tiring. And where is there a more beautiful harbour?

PS A side story; My cousin and his wife studied in sydney (for three years) ten years ago. They then left to work in melbourne, and a few years later to london. But the funny thing is, they soon got bored of london and returned to melbourne. I just can't understand how melbourne can be the tops of the three capital cities here. lol. But thats them haha.

Well, here is my input as a foreigner (German) living in Melbourne. I have been to Sydney and I must say, from the setting and the atmosphere it has a very cosmopolitan feel! And who can't feel a rush of happiness lounging under the Opera House with a glass of Chardonnay and gazing onto the bay and the Bridge! Yet, I have to agree with many people here , that I prefer the laidback Melbourne with all its culture, little side street cafes and restos and I love to stroll along the Yarra River towards the CBD. But I am looking forward to my next visit to SYD soon!

No offence, but they both suck. Australia has no culture. If all the kangaroos and reptiles were incharged, it would be worth it.

Sydney, or at least around the inner city, is stunningly beautiful and better looking than Melbourne because of the harbor and little bays. Melbourne has a better culture though as Sydney is more business orientated and somewhat of a better history as Melbourne is slightly more planned than Sydney, because Sydney just kinda grew. Personally from an SC4 point of view Sydney is better looking and has more landmarks.

Canberra was put where it was because they felt there needed to be a large inland town in Australia and the location is more due to the fact it had good water supply from the Snowy mountains than because it was between Syd. and Mel. Bathurst was going to be the capital until they felt a new, planned city designed by Walter Burley Griffin would showcase Australia better. Melbourne was the capital before 1927 though.

[Marc- Please stay on topic and do not discuss each other. Thank you.]

i think melbourne is better because it has more nightlife, more of everything.

i come from brisbane, so it is a neutral point of view 9.gif

i personally think brisbane is a smaller melbourne.

it is like comparing Los Angeles to New York City or something.

Sydney is just a place to live, with average everything,

Melbourne has the best of some stuff, which is why i go there on long weekends to check stuff out.

Please do not revive old threads. Thank you.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.
