Hello everyone,

I was bored so I was thinking about a topic about the Netherlands, as I am a Dutchman.
I'm from the city of Maastricht, the most southern city in the country.
The Netherlands' geographic position, makes the country a distribution country. With the port of Rotterdam and Schiphol Airport, it's an economical strong country.
In the 17th century, the country was one of the most important countries in the world, with some large trade cities as Amsterdam. In that time, Belgium was also a part of the Netherlands.
Well, let's start with some pictures. I hope you all post pictures of this beautiful country.

I remember going to the Netherlands once, beautiful place and I liked all the windmills (or should I call them windpumps 3.gif). It is noticeable how flat the terrain is there, making it great for cycling. I missed the chance to visit Rotterdam and Amsterdam however, great cities for architecture, so I will go one day.

I'm living in the great village of Staphorst, I fhink all Dutch will know it, because of it's great reputation.

In the old days, the village was one very long road, (it's about 15 km long) with little streets on each side. In Dutch it is called: Lintbouw.

    plaat.php?fileid=1101&f=235c553bd618afd6

The village is located at the A28 the only highway to the North of Holland, we also have a railway, but no station15.gif

    plaat.php?fileid=1086&f=d3446e0acfddf7d7

One of the farms in my village, the Queen visited it on 27 of July 2006

    I hope you liked it.

Please keep the language English. Thanks! 4.gif (Not that I don't like learning other languages, but you [in general] could be saying something inappropriate for someone who doesn't know English or can't access a translator)

That's where I'm at baby. Up north, on land that was claimed 500 years ago.

There isn't much in the way of cities around here, but plenty of history. I'll dig up some local pictures and info for the interested.

I live in Apeldoorn, but I used to live in Hoofddorp, next to schiphol in a polder, the Haarlemmermeer. The only hills we have in Holland are in southern Limburg (ther highest is around 350 meter) and some little ones on the veluwe (next to Apeldoorn, highest point 110 meter). I like the country, but it's sometimes a bit boring, all those flat areas.

A typical thing of Holland is that it's one of the crowdiest countries on earth, but we still have no real highrises, it's all low neighbourhoods with rowhouses.

That's because we are building on veen ground, you can't build highrise on veen ground, you have to drove piles verry deep, I believe 30 m in the Randstad before you reach sand, and skyscrapers need even better ground, so you have to dig deeper. I think in the futere, we will have higher buildings, but I prefer to live in the countryside.

Zwolle is a nice city in the north

    bwkl_zwolle_gr.gif

I like the brigde over the IJssel

    Zwolle.jpg

It's expanding rappely, if you see the building site of the neighbourhood of Stadshagen.

But Zwolle has no public transport than busses, so is always busy

hahah well, why don't you start right a way, we will certainly teach you some dutch 2.gif

oh yeah and Fledder: I like the skycraper diagram of the dutch highrises compared to the worlds skycrapers. As someone mentioned, we can build high because of the veen grounds, and I personally think, that 200m and higher wouldn't fit in this country. The only city would be Rotterdam to place real skycrapers. In a city like Amsterdam or Maastricht, highrise don't fit.

Check here some " buildings in maastricht":

Thought I'd show a picture of a part of my village. This was scanned from today's paper and shows the local church bell, catchin' some air.

    scanzwevendekloksz1.jpgClick for full size.

Sorry about the poor quality. My house is actually hidden behind the trees, but it's across the road from the big farm you see directly underneath the bell.

David1314: What are you studying? Dutch isn't entirely unlike English, I'm sure you'll pick it up.
