I'm moving to Eindhoven, which has the reputation of being the city with the most crime in the Netherlands, yay! Anyway, here's a picture that shows the city center in red (but not all of it) and blue shows the area inside the canals.

ehvcentrumla9.jpg

And another picture of the two churches and what some people think is Eindhoven's best looking building:

Anyway, I'm from Sittard, which is in the south of Holland, but there's not that much going on. Although, there is this:

Also, something that I think is quintessentially Dutch:

Uumke, ik heb één ding te zeggen! Jij zei dat Maastricht de oudste stad is, dat is niet waar, want Nijmegen is namelijk de oudste stad! Bijna alle historici zeggen dat nu... Ik woon in nijmegen, prachtige stad! ik zal binnenkort eens wat plaatjes posten 2.gif

english: Uumke, I have one thing to say! You said Maastricht is the eldest city in the netherlands, but that's not true, because Nijmegen is the eldest city! Almost every historian says that now... I live in Nijmegen, beautiful city! I'll post some pictures soon 2.gif

EDIT: uumke, las net dat je nijmegen niet leuk vond 15.gif  waarom niet eigelijk? ben je er uberhaupt eigenlijk wel eens geweest? zo niet: moet je echt eens doen 2.gif

english: uumke, just read that you don't like nijmegen 15.gif why not? have you ever been here? if you didn't: you really should 2.gif

I don´t really agree that highrises don´t fit this country. Holland is a modern country so in my opinion it has to reflect that. We all know the cute windmills and endless green stretches of flat land full of cows and sheep, but in the 21st century a city needs to have a skyline (among other things ofcourse)  to represent itself.

Personally, as it is now, I don´t mind our highrises being "low" in comparison to the few supertall structures around the world. If someone would put a 500 meter tall building in the middle of amsterdam that would screw up the skyline big time. It would be over three times taller than our current leading skyscraper in the city. Look at Taipei and their Taipei101... the whole thing is one big screw up. Then when you see Chicago and their Sears Tower, surrounded by buildings with comparable hights, it looks beautiful.

In short: we aren't ready for supertall highrises (yet).

However, highrise development has taken a leap in this country since ten years ago. Buildings between 100 and 150 metres are popping up literally everywhere, and now Amsterdam is developing the Sloterdijk area (along with the Zuidoost area, the Amstel area, and the Zuid-As area). This area is the only place where supertall structures can be built in the city, since Schiphol Airport limits most areas to a mere 150m or 100m limit (like the Zuid-As).

Anyways, the main tower featured in the development plan is to be either 180m or 280m tall. It was going to be 380m tall but apparently it was decided that  would be too much for Amsterdam at this time. It is a revival of the old Llamarg tower from the 1980's by the way.

I do think Holland will become one of the "taller" countries in the world during this century. Simply for the reason that we are all stressing to conserve the nature we have left in this country, and are even adding more to it. This means that in the long run our only option is to go up, up and up. I heard someone speculate on our population reaching an estimated 20 million by 2050, which I can not confirm at all, but if this is true, I don't see where we can leave all those people, other than literally stacking them on top of eachother.

We'll see I suppose. I'll just continue my life meanwhile, if you don't mind 3.gif

    Plan Sloterdijk voor 2015

This picture shows the Sloterdijk project, which is supposed to be completed by 2015

well, Simjesse, there are enough speculations around the oldest city of the Netherlands.

Recently, there were found some old Celtic buildings in Maastricht. But anyway, there aren't official reports on that...so...

Well I've been to Nijmegen. As ofcourse there are the same shops as in any other dutch city....I liked the Waalkade...but I didn't like the people. (I don't want to say that Maastrichtenaren are polite 3.gif).

But that was like 4 years ago. Maybe a new visit2.gif

English: Sim_Jesse, I've been in Nijmegen a time ago for some sort of geography-project, I actually liked the city very much. It's pity that a large part of Nijmegen was bombed in the second world war and destroyed most of the older buildings.

BTW: I live in 'Baarn', a small town with a pop of +- 25000, I don't think it will be necessary to post something about that. Althought the queen (Beatrix) was born here at 'Paleis Soestdijk' 2.gif

Edit: For those who are interested; This is Baarn: (I live somewhere in that red circle)

This is the city where I live... it's called woerden and it is avery poular city for big dutch brands because of it's central position, when you travel west there's Utrecht, east there's Rotterdam and Den Haag (The Hague) and north-east there's Amsterdam. In woerden you'll find Campina main headquarters and distribution and schuitema (C1000) west and woerden is also a famous cheese city, grozette cheesse and the (in holland well-known) ERU goudkuipje 4.gif also the bijenkorf (it is a big store) has it's distribution in woerden so it's a really fast growing city. One of the problems is that woerden is situated in the green hart and a city is not allowed to grow in surface so soon we might be forced to skyline in the centre... (that would be really ugly)HollandGroenHart_416.jpg on the pic below you can see the church in front and the castle behind (they've lowered the towers long ago because we didn't use them anymore, I believe that was one of the stupidest things done in history 3.gif).

    woerden_en_vlaardingen_verkenning_100106

This is a picture of the second centre (pic below) (we now have two conected to each other but they are totally different, one is old one is new) I love the new architecture where they've tryed to keep the old architecture in tactwoerden_en_vlaardingen_verkenning_100106

and here you see a map of the centre (you can still see some of the defending water around it... it's called the "singel")woerden.gif

And the most beautiful city of the Netherlands, surrounded by the best piece of nature I've seen in my life, except southern France. OK, here some pictures:

    70517.jpg

The tower you see at the back is the Kadaster Tower, the 2nd highest tower in Apeldoorn.

    aerial-image-towards-apeldoorn.jpg

And the highest, the Ernst & Young Tower, is the tower you see at the right in this photo.

    apeldoornskanaal.jpg

The canal around which Apeldoorn is built, with some residential towers surrounding it here.

    palace-apeldoorn-netherlands.jpg

'Paleis het Loo', one of the palaces owned by our royals.

    371923.jpg

The interior of the City Office in Apeldoorn.

    junction-from-balloon.jpg

The reason why Apeldoorn has the size fitting the name 'city': The A1 and A50, two of Holland's most important highways, crossing each other.

    orpheus-apeldoorn.jpg

Orpheus, the only Dutch theater being able to be a concurrent of the biggest in the country, Schouwburg Amsterdam.

    apeldoorn-grote-kerk.jpg

And as every Dutch older city, also Apeldoorn has a 'Grote Kerk' (Main Church)

    view-apeldoorn.jpg

And I'll finish with a nice overview of this beautiful city.

    Veluwe-trail-03.jpg

But we still have the nature, so this and the following picture are for showing that.

Eeeeh???? I'm sorry, but current archiological evidence states that Nijmegen is the oldest city of the Netherlands. It just had it's 2000th birthday 4.gif (there has been a competition going on for years about which of these two cities is the oldest 2.gif

Yes I am from Nijmegen, Old Roman town where Charlemagne (Karel de Groote) lived and Frederick Barbarossa of the germans.

In the country, but also to many people internationally the city is known for the 4 days marchtes. People of over 45 nationalities participate in this sporting event.

Nijmegen was liberated from the Germans in 1944, 6 months or so before the rest of the country was liberated. In the same year it was bomed (some say accidentilly, but some believe intentionally, since it was a strategic location) by the americans, killing over 800 people. This is why there are not many old buildings left in the city.

Currently Nijmegen has around 160000 inhabitants and this is expected to grow upto 220000 when new projects Waalfront and Waalsprong are finished.

    Here are some pics 4.gif

@Safari: Translation: I have heard about Dutch Cities that have been founded in the 70s, does anyone know more about that? /End of translation

Yes, Actually, the netherlands founded it's twelfth province during the 60s and built the two cities there in the 70s. They are Lelystad and Almere (the old name of the IJselmere/Zuiderzee)

As for the pictures of Belgium, I sugest that Vlanders first Join the Netherlands and form one country since 70% of the Dutch wouldn't mind if that happens 2.gif ) As for now, I'd post those pictures of Antwerp and Mechlin on a threat called Belgi

Answer: Yup, It is! 4.gif It is at least 2000 years old, believed to be founded by the romans (or perhaps a germanic tribe even earlier. In roman times it was called Novio Magum, which translates to New Market (Nieuwe markt) Which later evolved to Neue Merk,  Nimwegen and Nijmegen
