    Architectural Field Guide to Schulmania

    Third Edition

    By Dr. Near Lee Dunn

    PREFACE

The architectural history of Schulmania is complex and multifaceted. The evolution and diffusion of styles can be documented to the earliest days of settlement in the Schulmanicus Island homeland. Distinct architectural styles developed as a result of climate conditions, available materials, and the development and interpretation of regional canons. The original dwellings of Schulmanicus were simple wooden dwellings. These shelters and the farms they served nurtured the beginnings of civilization. As towns developed, wooden housing developed a greater complexity. Stone was used both in paving roads and in building civic structures. Development of civic structures demonstrated both societal development and social awareness. Initial civic structures, other than road infrastructure, began as walls and castles and as religious structures. These beginnings led to the development of orders of architecture and regional variants on these styles. In this guide, we will examine the architectural development of Schulmania, from ancient design to modern cities.

    PART VII: Lake Style

Lake Style (English Style to non-Schulminions) has its origins in the Lake George area of Devonshire. A series of planned communities line the picturesque lake. Using indigenous materials, buildings were constructed of dark red/brown brick and wood instead of stone and other materials favored in other parts of Schulmania. The small, closely packed homes and shops are often appointed with stonework and often feature peaked roofs with chimneys at opposite ends.

A classic example of this is Georgetown, the oldest of the Lake District towns. Its central area is a cluster of Lake Style buildings, perfectly demonstrating the theme. Here, we note the twinned chimneys, each featuring multiple ventilation holes.

    essexlane1py6.jpg

One might also note the generally symmetrical layout of the façade, with selected featured highly articulated while other parts of the façade remain relatively unadorned.

    nen5es9.jpg
This massing of dark brick buildings in similar style is a radical departure from vernacular architecture in the older parts of the nation. Also worthy of note is the extensive use of the gable and cross gable roof, often pierced with dormer windows.

    lake1gg3.jpg

The characteristic multiple end chimneys are a feature of this style.

Some typical Lake Style homes as seen today.

    PART VIII: Georgian Style

    church1ha6.jpg

The church in Georgetown was the first to demonstrate this style. It features elaborate corner towers and crenellation along the roofline in addition to stone tracery around the pointed arch windows.

    church1rh5.jpg

In neighboring St. George, another church in the same style was built. It is a somewhat simpler version, featuring the crenellated roofline, but more subdued in its tracery and other decorative elements.

    sqch1ph6.jpg

In Schulmericho, an exuberant version in red brick now serves as the tallest structure in all of Devonshire. It trades the roofline crenellation and stone tracery for bold verticality, topping a large entrance tower with an impressive steeple.

The classically Georgian Abbey of St. Grapeape, located 15 miles east of Monkey Power Mountain is a fine example of the style.

The exuberant architecture and fanciful roof of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Fancy Feast.

    PART IX: Narrow Style

Narrow buildings have been built before in Schulmania, but never in such masses that the assumed an identity of their own. That is, until the walled city of Schulmericho. Taking an expansive city plan and condensing it into a compact, walled area required certain accommodations. Chief among them, narrowing the buildings and reducing open space. More enclosed space would be gained from building up instead of across. Most buildings in the Narrow Style are built of the local dark red/brown brick. Most are several stories tall and are less ornamented at street level that they are at the top. Steeply pitched gabled roofs often feature intricate designs or fanciful scrollwork. Using the most of the space, Narrow Style buildings have allowed the compact town to quickly emerge as the largest n Devonshire.

The crowded streets of Schulmericho seem more so because of the preponderance of Narrow Style buildings.

    As always, just awesome!

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

My index page is being eaten again. I have come to understand that it is bigger than the forum can handle for size of an individual post. So.... I will work on Index 3.0... be looking for it to span several posts when ready.
