    Oops...hit the wrong button...

Who knew islands could be fun?  It's great to see folks experimenting with all the new ploppables out there.  You may see some of the same conduct soon over at my CJ.

It looks like a really well organized and graphically very smart operation here, Bruce.  Schulmania's a pretty cool place to spend some ST time.

    Nice job!

Gecko_2006       Um, yeah, the islands did seem to have a bit in common. I think that little glitch has been fixed. Glad you like the CJ thus far. They are indeed on quite an adventure now!

chocolatemax285     Thanks for your comment. I am glad you like what I have done thus far.

Emilin       Elvis was pretty convincing, but I think eating his competition lost him some votes!

    sc4portugal     Thanks!

eggie99      Thanks! Warning- PUN ALERT!! :-)

GMT       Thanks! More is on the way!

blade2k5      Glad you like it. Hard to believe that John Lennon had to be eaten in the struggle to name new land, isn't it? The moral of this story is that we can settle our differences without resorting to sauté pans.

Dedgren     Thanks for your kind post. And, thanks even more for helping me iron out the glitches in my new table of contents. Schulmania will have something named in your honor for your help. ?

Schulmanicus: It's the End of the World As We Know It!

    (And I Feel Fine)

    [Apologies to REM....]

Truly, it is the end of the world as they knew it! Schulmanicus was no longer the only land in the world. To the great surprise and delight of all, new lands had been discovered. And there was no telling what was in store for future explorers. New philosophical questions cropped up: Are we alone? Are there other Sims than just us Schulminions? Why are there parking lots built on some lots when we have not invented cars yet?

As the word spread across the island about the miraculous new discoveries, a movement arose to build a new shrine on the sacred hill. The temple complex had been an inspirational area for years. It seemed logical to build a shrine in the spirit of thankfulness for the success of the First Fleet and all future fleets of exploration. The Sailor's Shrine was built as a lovely peristyle overlooking the World Ocean, as the great freshwater sea was known. It was in a Temple Style, (which non-Sims call a Greco-Roman Classical style) with a lovely colonnade at which the sailors' spouses and significant others could look out for the masts of approaching vessels and gardens for reflection and prayer. This beautiful monument was designed by the architectural firm of U. Will Pei, whose exorbitant fees were deemed worth it for the great buildings they designed. U's great-great- great-great- great-great- great-great- great-great- great-great-grandson was also a well-known architect. Perhaps you have heard of him?

    sailorsshrinerz2.jpg

This lofty perch served as a great spot for weddings and also as a popular spot known as Lover's Leap, as bungee jumping was coming in vogue at the time. Sometimes, the two events were combined and a newlywed couple actually took a plunge will "taking the plunge".

    sailorsshrine2sd8.jpg

The Temple Style, so well executed by U. Will Pei & Associates, continued to serve as an inspiration. As the population ballooned and new settlements were constructed, Temple Style edifices became very fashionable.

The population of Schulminions tripled to nearly 8,000 on the island as the Age of Discovery dawned. Settlements were expanded at several sites, and abandoned in others. Fleets of exploration ships headed out from the ports to explore the new lands to the south. The great light tower, built on Cape El Mono, became a busy port and a town grew up around it. Settlers from the farm community of Baba abandoned their settlement to seek their fortune in nouveau riche Smightower or in the bustling suburbs of Busscastle. Schulmania was indeed taking off!

On our whirlwind tour of scenic Schulmanicus, let's first see the ruins where the Baba community once stood.

    babaabandoned4rb6.jpg

This wide view shows the farming community's location. The houses and shops have been reduced to their stone foundations. Small clearings show where land was once cultivated, though most of the land has returned to forest.

    babaabandoned5cf5.jpg

A closer view shows remnants of a once-thriving town

    babaabandoned3ve4.jpg

The lonely stone tower still watches over the settlement, still protecting against any vegetable incursions.

    babaabandoned1uk2.jpg

The scenic ruins will someday be a great tourist destination.

    babaabandoned2gg6.jpg

The fine masonry of Baba craftsmen was admired far and wide. Many of the masons left for employment in the larger cities building even grander stone buildings.

Some of the masons migrated to Busscastle, which continued to grow and needed more workers in all field from construction to chocolate taste tester to certified cat brusher. The grandest structure built in the expanded town of Busscastle was the Baby Castle. Baby Busscastle was designed to handle the commerce needs of a growing town. It served as a combination farmer's market and arcade (non-video type).

    busscastlebabycastle3rb6.jpg

Baby Busscastle was built as sort of a suburban shopping mall - a medieval version of one, anyway. It was hard for Busscastle to grow behind the walls, so expansion began outward.

    busscastlebabycastle2ti7.jpg

The Baby Busscastle fit snugly above the hill from Buss Castle and across from the tomato fields. Luckily, the tomatoes have been very docile and have not been aggressive at all. There have been reports of a few brazen, saucy tomatoes. But, that's a different story altogether.

    busscastlebabybusscastlbh2.jpg

Interestingly enough, Baby Busscastle was, in an era without electricity, illuminated at night. I wonder how they did that...

    busscastleanimalstr6.jpg

A new road, Lower Busscastle Road, led from Wanda-Busscastle Road (at the intersection with Baby Busscastle) down to the new suburbs. Some of the cows kept by the locals roam around by the road, apparently oblivious to the pack of bears descending upon them. Luckily, these wise cows devised a plan to deter would-be attackers. They held up signs reading "Eat More Chikin" and the hungry carnivores would turn and leave, heading off to a local fast food emporium. As seen in the top left of the frame, the local gardens provided ample snacks for allsorts of wildlife and domesticated animals. One bunny narrowly escaped a terrible fate in the garden behind the top left cow, belonging to one Mr. McGregor, who planned to put the naughty bunny he caught into a pie.

Lower Busscastle Road leads to Lower Busscastle, a collection of small houses built in the shadow of the great castle and nestled between the hills and the shore.

    busscastlesuburb1bh5.jpg

Lower Busscastle Road terminates near the shore, providing scenic views for those living at the end of the street.

    busscastlesuburbs2ov5.jpg

Some ornamental trees were planted to add to the natural beauty of the area. A nice footpath connects neighbors. Many of the neighborhood cats would sun themselves along the footpath, looking up at the birds in the trees and contemplating their next meal (which, as usual, would be coming out of a can)...

    busscastlesuburbs3yc0.jpg

The village had small gardens to provide the essentials of life- cocoa and the flavorings for cocoa. Farmer Brown was heard to exclaim "Aint nothin' better than a box of Busscastle chocolates, sittin' in yer rockin' chair, pettin' yer cat, and watchin' the world go by".

    busscastlesuburbs5zk5.jpg

The road was steep - hastening the invention of multispeed bicycles.

In the next update, see the new town of Smightower, named for the mighty light tower which was the first outpost on this corner of the island. A sneak preview of what's to come:

    smightowernewferryportdgo5.jpg

A bustling ferry station signals the emergence of Smightower as a major player in Schulmanian economics. Just how much growth does this port and light tower create? Find out next time!

Hello, why don't you edit the lots and take out the parkinglots etc in the Loteditor? I am currently busy doing that, customizing lots that is not necessarily taking out parking lots! I am combining this with a mod which stops the maxis buildings from growing (can be found in the forums) to drastically alter my CJ. I have customized one more thing. But that would spoil my next update if I told you 2.gif

connor_v     Thanks for stopping by. More adventures coming up!

beskhu3epnm        Thanks for your comment. The CJ is a bit unpredictable in that it is just getting started. Once they fan out, they will find new adventures and make different types of discoveries.

    Waerth     Thanks for dropping by!

infinitum19     Thank you! I am glad I made someone smile! ?

hamsterTK     Thanks! Glad you liked it! Schulmania is just like its creator - a bit quirky! 2.gif

blade2k5        True... maybe ancient parking lots were for oxcarts and wagons and such. Although, I hate to imagine rush hour on cobblestone freeways as Conestoga wagons cut each other off and such back in the days. Some of the lots in Schulmania seem to have cars on them already. Of course, they are just deluxe wagon and cart skins, not automobiles. Schulmanicus and its colonies seem to have some hot rodders - they rev up a team of horses and blow past those oxcarts!

Waerth        Good questions. I have not actually used the lot editor before. I suppose I could. But it really has not been a problem just yet. And, it sort of gets interesting to talk my way out of some anomalies which may occur. I pre-planned for anomalies by having the monkey set up some of that at the beginning. Now, I blame him for everything!!

Jacqulina       Thank you - always a pleasure to have you drop by. I like the ruins too and would like to have more somewhere else. It's fun to have different types of cities and areas - even abandoned ones.

Charles Rodulfo       Thank you for coming by again. Always glad to hear from you. Actually, Baba became abandoned for the official and non official reasons. According to the CJ, the masons left to work on building new structures elsewhere where the big construction contracts were being let. The real reason is that I wanted to put in some ruins! So far, no cars on the roads, but if you see any on the lots- they are upscale wagons, not cars! Thanks for putting my CJ as one of your faves. I enjoy yours as well and would like for the Schulminions, once they reach the edge of the map, to come and visit your CJ. It will take a while though. They are just now starting to explore tile #2 of the region!

Giligone    Thanks! Those bears should listen to the cows and "Eat Mor Chikin"!

sc4portugal        Yep - something is definitely up with the ferry!

Purpledaddy        Lightning bugs... yeah, that's the ticket! Thanks for the comment. Ya know, in RL, I found when my insurance really went up was when the Jr. Schulmanator showed up. No one tells you that they show up they show up with a line of credit in your name!!

pickled_pig        Thanks! I like a little quirkiness. And with initials like I. M., Pei is begging for parody!

patriots_1228   That's it! Custom muscle carts and chopper plows! I can see it now - Conestoga wagons tearing down the streets, flames painted down both sides and a wooden spoiler on the back end! Hilarious!!!

    Architectural Field Guide to Schulmania

    First Edition

    By Dr. Yuri Vilgenius

    PREFACE

The architectural history of Schulmania is complex and multifaceted. The evolution and diffusion of styles can be documented to the earliest days of settlement in the Schulmanicus Island homeland. Distinct architectural styles developed as a result of climate conditions, available materials, and the development and interpretation of regional canons. The original dwellings of Schulmanicus were simple wooden dwellings. These shelters and the farms they served nurtured the beginnings of civilization. As towns developed, wooden housing developed a greater complexity. Stone was used both in paving roads and in building civic structures. Development of civic structures demonstrated both societal development and social awareness. Initial civic structures, other than road infrastructure, began as walls and castles and as religious structures. These beginnings led to the development of orders of architecture and regional variants on these styles. In this guide, we will examine the architectural development of Schulmania, from ancient design to modern cities.

    PART I: Ancient Design

Ancient structures on Schulmanicus were shelter and support structures for early farming Schulminions. As can be expected, farming was the first occupation developed. The fertile and productive fields provided the resources necessary both for survival and for construction. Archaeological evidence has pointed toward tiny villages set up similar to the example shown below.

    schulmanicusvillagedayjg6.jpg

Small cabins built of wood are constructed on the perimeter of cultivated fields. The frames and walls are constructed of wooden beams and boards. The gabled roofs are built of wooden shingles. Homes are constructed around a large common field. This indicates collective ownership of the field and its crops. A high degree of cooperation at this stage of development indicates a healthy foundation for a progressive society.

Due to the small population at the beginning of Schulminion society and the extensive development of land in Schulmanicus for agriculture and urbanization over the centuries, little remains of these most ancient structures. A more modern, larger and more complex style of construction arose to take its place as the development of villages and towns began in earnest.

    pioneercabinuk5.jpg

This simple structure has been preserved at Schulmanicus National Historic Park as an example of Ancient Design.

    pioneercabin2qk3.jpg

Schulmanicus National Historic Park is the only place in the nation where authentic structures of this style and era can be found.

    PART II: Cottage Style

In a development from simple wooden homes, archaeologists identified a shift in building development to what has been dubbed the Cottage Style. Cottage Style structures are framed in wood but do not rely on solid wooden walls. Timber framing is used as both a structural and as an aesthetic focal point. The walls are completed by a plaster on thatch stucco and the roof is thatched. These structures demonstrate an advancement in Schulminion use of local resources and proved to be far more durable than the original all-wood structures.

    busssettlementwildlifevisitxu5.jpg

The greater flexibility builders had with this new building style allowed for more complex structures in greater proximity. This led to the development of the first villages. The first four settlements developed on Schulmanicus include Stell, Buss, Wirt, and Wanda. Each had a similar configuration. The four villages were connected by roads, which were stone lined trails. Greater population density and the beginnings of infrastructure helped foster trade and development in all villages. The general shape of structures remained the same as before: simple rectilinear buildings with gabled roofs. The scale of buildings did change, however, to reflect varying uses of buildings. Two story buildings were developed during this time as well.

    cottage1sk3.jpg

This well-preserved example in Stell shows the Cottage Style in context.

    cottage2sx1.jpg

This authentic cottage has been used as a tourist destination and guest house for years, but has retained its original rustic charm thanks to strict development and preservation ordinances.

    PART III: Stick Style

The Stick Style is a natural outgrowth of Cottage Style developments. The drawback to Cottage structures is their small size. The materials and structure simply were not well suited to larger or multi-story structures. The Stick Style allows for greater vertical development and greater design flexibility. Hallmarks of this style include visible framing members, hewn of rough or finished timber, which serve both as decorative elements as well as load bearing support for the walls and roof. Greater flexibility in materials selection are available , with a variety of wall materials (including wood, plaster, stucco, brick and stone) and roof materials (wooden or slate shingles). This variety of materials allowed for greater variation in architectural design as well. Many small homes retained the simple rectangular shape with gabled roofs, but other forms developed. Many structures, as they became larger, gained more steeply pitched roofs. This greater pitch allowed for better use of the space above the main floors. Architects began to pierce the roof with dormer windows, allowing in light and making the upper floors fully functional.

    stelltown1ap0.jpg

As shown above, Stell demonstrates the more complex structures developed during this era. The Stick Style features more complex rooflines and roof structures. Above, the house on the corner has a trapezoidal roof with a gabled entrance. To the left is a house with a clipped gable roof. At the top of the image is a larger structure with covered entrance and a pair of dormer windows. Each structure shown is multistory.

    bearinstreetee2.jpg

Above, complex patterns are evident not just in the roof construction but also in the timber framing. Exposed timbers allow for decorative placement, usually in a grid or crossing pattern.

    wirttownvh7.jpg

Many well preserved structures of original Stick Style remain on Schulmanicus. Periodic shifts in fashion have led to "revivals" of antique styles in architecture. Towns such as Wirt, above, inspired developers as they colonized lands across Schulmania.

Oh, now I get it! btw, nice update. I like how you described how the schulminions built their houses and how it has evolved. I want to see more! hmm... maybe someday you'd like to meet the King. hahaha still about 10-20 or so pages 'till our people meet. I expect to see this CJ to exist for a long period of time. It would be like Nexis of Genesis only, I've witnessed it since the beginning. Who knows, we might be looking at the future trixie award CJ winner. =)

By way of a "Thank You" gift, we'd like to send you our STEX Collector's DVD. It's some of the best buildings, lots, maps and mods collected for you over the years. Check out the STEX Collections for more info.

Each donation helps keep Simtropolis online, open and free!

Thank you for reading and enjoy the site!
