I think that should be the Cairo because there we have found the first amazing buildings of civilization. Or maybe should be Rome, even if I thiks that the city can't guess a world parlament... But from Rome we get many things, from Law to Sport and show business!

New York City                             Paris                                               Hong Kong

Los Angeles                               Madrid                                            Beijing

Toronto                                        Rome                                             Singapore

Mexico City                                  Moscow                                          Sydney

São Paulo                                   Frankfurt                                         Melbourne

Rio de Janeiro                           Berlin                                               Auckland

Buenos Aires                             St. Petersburg                               Tokyo

Johanessburg                           Calcutta                                           The Hague

Cape Town                                 Chennai (Madras)                        Brussels

Lagos                                          Bangalore                                       Dubai

Cairo                                            Bangkok

London                                        Shanghai

Sure, I know a few cities here may not be as important as others, but I just picked a whole bunch to make choosing better.  It there's another city that someone requests, I'll see if I can add it.

What are you talking about? The population of greater London is about 7,300,000, and the  metropolitan area of London is about 13,000,000. Greater New York is about 8,300,000, and it's metro area is about 20,000,000. And according to this, New York has overtook London in size since 1925.

New York City probably has more financial and cultural influence over the world than anyone else, but Tokyo is friggin' huge, I think it's metropolitan are is something like 26,000,000 people.

While my home town of San Francisco is awesome, and was once seriously considered for the UN HQ, I'd have to say that there is no one specific capitol of the world. There are continental capitols, like say Brussels for Europe (HQ for the EU), and niche specific capitols in certain industries or in politics (New York, London, Tokyo for their economic weight). I trust you get what I'm saying.

If we were to go by neutrality and number of international organizations in the area, I'd go with Geneva. It's a part of perhaps the most neutral country in the planet.

(Huge invite to a flame war, so I'm jumping in.)

What I'm most shocked about is how many of the above posters don't know where these cities are on the planet?!     DAMN PEOPLE! get a globe and a subscription to National Geographic.

That being said NY,NY. -at least it's the capitol of the western world.

Thats Population. Not Size. Why do people always think Size means Population. I mean actual land area.

Also London is 7,600,000 and 18,000,000.

I vote San Francisco and the Bay Area metro area.  I am a resident of San Jose, and I think this would be a perfect place.  Beautiful terrain, readily-available space, and a transportation network to beat the band! (Well, except for the 101)  What else could they want?

Actually think you'll find that London is the most important financial centre in the world. New York has lost ground to London given the more 'relaxed' financial restrictions imposed on companies. Mayor Bloomberg himself stated that New York had lost its 'World Financial Capital' position to London.

London is also the centre where new Asian and Russian businesses come to seek to raise capital and list their companies. The only area where New York us better than London is in the public offerings.

In pretty much all other areas, London comes top.

Best to be aware of all the facts and do some research.

Wrong London metro area is between 12 and 14' million inhabitants, not need to use fantaisist numbers.

18 million inhabitants is not the metropolitan area of London but its metropolitan region, it is not the same thing.

God we still going on about population.....how awfully tiresome and boring.

Greater London - 7,355,400

Urban - 8,278,251

Metropolitan - 13,063,441

Metropolitan area, Metropolitan region and Urban area are all pretty similar and inter-changeable terms. Lets not be rather anal about such things.

The Greater London Urban Area is the conurbation or continuous urban area based around London, in south east England with an estimated population of 8,505,000 in 2005[1] The urban area measured 1,623.3 km

The only city relevant enough to even be considered a world capital is New York City.

Come on guys, be realistic...quote>

New York can never be world capital, it is the largest city in one of the most military active countries on earth. Brussels, already home of the EU parliament (the EU basically meaning piece between some of the worlds most influencial and powerful nations) would be a more likely candidate.

And I try to say this with as little bias as possible, London would beat New York as London IS more culturally active than NYC and actually took back it's title of World Financial Capital from NYC in 2006 after around 80 years. Everything I have said has been backed up from Belfastuniguy already if you look through the pages.

The World Capital could never be in the USA because the USA is too much of an offensive nation rather than defensive with it's military. Same with the United Kingdom and France.

Geneva is the most neutral city in the world, home to many more international conferences than any other city in the world.  Switzerland on the whole is considered the only truly neutral ground in the world.  Why would you not put the world capital there?

The capital should not designated by the power of the city.  It's designed to be a neutral ground, where all can meet on equal terms.  If you place the world capital in New York, the balance of power (or the perception of it) would inevitably shift towards America.

Oh, and just to prove the point - the UN isn't in NYC.  It's placed on International Territory, and New York has no juristiction there.quote>

With the exception of the "America" thing (which is not the name of a country) I agree with every word. Geneva is as neutral as it gets. There have been similar threads here with regards to neutral capital cities... Canberra, halfway between Sydney and Melbourne; Ottawa, halfway between Toronto and Montreal (and also literally on the border between English and French Canada), and Washington as you mentioned, in a territory all its own. As far as the United Nations goes, since people have used it to support New York City, Geneva is currently host to the headquarters of many UN agencies. And of course it's also the home of the Geneva Conventions.

So yeah, Geneva it is. Overwhelmingly.

If we're talking for shear notoriety it would be New York.

Paris, Rome or London for culture perhaps? Hong Kong and Tokyo should be thrown in to, and Toronto could be considered, so could Sydney in that matter or the new ones of Shanghai or Dubai, but, there is only one real true metropolis on earth right now and that is New York.

However with this Financial trouble I see NYC not being as powerful as it once was...

Geneva is a pretty good idea but is it big enough or notable enough?

Why don't we just build a world capital in Anarctica. We could build it out of legos and k'nex.

There is no world capital. There never was and there never will be. Our entire civilization is so diverse yet distinct from each other culture. Plus we all rely on each other. New York has business, Paris, London, Brussels all have history and culture, China has manufacturing and Japan has technology, Chicago and Sydney has architecture, Los Angeles has entertainment. New Orleans and Liverpool are important Industrial and Economic Ports. But not one city or nation has it all.

That's what I hate about many of these threads. There are great and very important cities on the list, but overall, not one city is better than the other. We all have our strengths and weaknesses.
