Hey, what about Ulaanbaator? It's the capital of Mongolia - a country half the size of Europe which has somehow managed to survive between the two super powers of China and Russia/USSR for ages and ages. Sure, perhaps it's not as developed as NY/London (I'd go for London though) but that's not neccessarilyl a bad point.

Allthough its small, (a tiny bit off the subject), If it were to be the capital with the most "Best" view from the sea, I would pick Cardiff, as the sea front on Cardiff (doctor-Who Fan's would have seen it {and torchwood} is really attractive, and Modern.

Back to the subject I would pick "Good Old LONDON!"

I vote one of these three cities: Los Angeles, California San Francisco, California San Jose, California Los Angeles is the "big city" San Francisco is important. San Jose is a slightly less large city that has always gotten the crap end of the stick. It's still a great city...

lol, I think the chances of Earth ever having a capital city are very slim.... However, if I had to choose one current city, it would be New York because it is probably the worlds most known city.

A while back there was this thing on the 5 cities that were considered world cities(various reasons)

No certain order here

Sydney

London

Paris

New York

Shanghai or Hong Kong)

I would say it should be between these cities if it came to decide one.

Shanghai, Hong Kong,Singapore,Sydney,London,Geneva,New York

Personally they should make a new city for it one in the centre of the Pacific but it would have to be on a new island

If any city were to become the world capital, then it would have to be agreed upon by the majority of the worlds nations. If we assume that the current balance of power and relationships continue, then we can rule out about half of the cites listed.

The US would not agree to any city in Russia or China, and likewise Russia and China would not agree to any US city. China would dispute cities in India and Japan, and it is unlikely that the UK, France and Germany would agree to any of each others cities.

Next I think we can rule out any country that is not entirely politically, economically, and socially stable. That rules out:-

Johannesburg

Cape Town

Lagos

Bangkok

Buenos Aires

Also, the capital should be somewhere democratic. That rules out Cairo, Dubai, and makes Singapore borderline.

Ideally the capital would be somewhere central, with close connections to large numbers of nations. That rules out Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland, and is a minus-point for Toronto, Rio, Sao-Paulo, and Mexico City.

From your original list that leaves:

Madrid

Rome

The Hague

Brussels

I think Geneva should also be included, and possibly Athens as well - the birthplace of democracy.

tbh if there was going to be a world-capital it would have to be neutral and not attatched to any country. I would say if, for instance, London was to become World Capital then it would have to de-attatch itself from the UK. I would go for a new city, purpose-built and independent.

I think it should be a city in japan, not necessarily tokyo. Japan mixes east and west, and thrives. The Japanese do not have a strong military.

Edit: Istanbul is an awesome choice, props to Raikkonen!

A world capital should be set up the same way that the U.S. capital was: build a seperate city on neutral territory for the sole purpose of being the seat of goverment. That way, no one country owns the city and there are no more disputes. As I said, the U.S. did the same thing choosing the capital because most of the states viewed themselves as countries at the time and a neutral city was built to settle the conflict that would have erupted had the capital been placed in an individual state.

As a fan of NYC and a current resident in the metro area, I think fo shizzle it should be New York, before 9/11 it was the largest financial district and most important place in the world(one of the most(but it was one of the more important ones)) But if it were to come to a tie(which we all kno would haooen) I would Choose NYC, Paris, London, Hong Kong(although China is not a favorite country of mine) Toronto, Rio De Janeiro, or Sao Paolo.....or Chicago(it has much potential)

If there was to a world capital it should be ( even though it was not on the orginial list)

Bern, Switzerland.

Bern already created a great financial influnce thoughout the world . Plus, Switzerland has not taken part in many warsof the course of history (If not any)  and the world should take example of that.

For all the reasons stated, and because it's my hometown, I support NYC. About the neutrality issue: Since the rest of the county has this weird love/hate relationship with us (Manhattan is often referred to as an island of the coast of Europe") and we've been grumbling about succession for a long time now, there'd be no problem with making us an independent city-state.

I wonder which nation owns as creditor the most of the rest of the world's national debts. That ultimate creditor nation, to whom the rest of the world owes, would probably have the world's real controlling capital.  Fait accompli...muhuhahahaha.

I'm starting to worry where that might be.  How much of the U.S. debt does Tokyo own, or is it now Beijing?

But, you know, I do like the idea of Istanbul...can we go back to calling it Constantinople?

hmmm

after thinking about it, id have to say Rome. the ancient capital of the world, filled with history, it just seems right =]

New York is nice, but it has no long term global history. its relatively new, and a global capital should have been around for awhile

New York, even thought I've never been in London, which I consider it's biggest opponent, I think New York still wins
