That's right, folks! He's the "hottest and most bankable" star right now, but Paramount apparently got sick of his behavior and quit contract negotiations. That's a lot of money to throw away, so they must have a very good reason.

Either way can I jump up and down on the couch now? His pushing of scientology would be enough.

Imagine catering for all his demands at every movie, set, interview, media promotion etc.....you'd get rid of him too!

Hmmm...oh well! Life goes on for me.

It must have been that South Park episode that pushed Paramount over the edge...10.gif

@DT: He did THAT?!? That's one I never heard about. (Then again, I'm not a big fan) Was it the placenta of his own mystery child?

The Last Samurai was a great movie despite him. I think Ken Watanabe, the martial arts and the magnificent (NZ) Japanese scenery was enough to distract one from noticing Tom too much. Pity Billy got chopped so early in the movie.

The Last Samurai was actually a good film. I also enjoyed Mission Impossible 1 and 3, but 2 was stupid. He's done loads of great films when you think about it. Rain Man is a great film that depicts the troubles of living with someone who is (and being) Autistic. But I'd imagine that his axing was to do with all his demands...

Last "good" film he did was "A Few Good Men", that was primarily down to the writing (Aaron Sorkin, also wrote The West Wing) and some superb performances by Big Jack, Kevin Bacon and Keifer Sutherland.

Collateral was a rather good movie.

In spite of myself, I do find myself watching War of the Worlds whenever I see it on.

Tom Cruise can be a rather talented actor - when he wants to be. Unfortunately, his ego and inability to shut up when needed overrides this. It is when one's ego overcomes ones talent that they become unworthy of unnoticed - this is something we see in all facets of life.

Marlon Brando and Orson Wells were sort of the same - talented, but overrun by ego.

Unfortunately for Cruise, he does not have the talents of a Brando nor Wells.

In general, I'm not a fan of his movies at all. But sometimes I watch TV and see him on the red carpet and doing interviews and I just feel like everything he is saying is fake! He has a cheesy little smile, and that whole Kate Holmes relationship is crap. I think he just wants all this attention and sadly enough, hes getting it! He argues, he jumps on couches and he spreds scientology everywhere he grows. I really don't like him...

And yes, he is somewhat of a good actor. But outside of his job I still feel like he's acting...

EDIT: oh I'm so sorry Tom, it is Kate not Katie. "She is a women now, she will go by Kate"

"War of the Worlds" was good precisely because it was so fun to watch bad things happen to Tom Cruise. "Jerry Maguire" and "Minority Report" were also decent. Actually, most of his movies are at least watchable, which is more than I can say for a lot of actors with a comparable number of films. However, you have wonder how much of the credit goes to Paramount for putting together some quality productions, often with good scripts and supporting actors. It sounds like part of the falling out was over his pay as well, reputed to be at 25% of the gross, not net, per film. To put that in perspective, "War of the Worlds" grossed over $500 million.

In addition, he also received 20 -25 million per film regardless of any box office take.  He was certainly getting some sweet contracts.

My sentiments exactly, MrCinatit. One thing about Cruise...he hasn't had a bad movie as far as reviews and box office receipts go. No bombs, which is something. But then again, I think that's more Paramount's production than him. He just happened to be in the right movies. They don't do much for me (though I kinda liked Collateral), but they sell. And I also find something cheesy and fake about the guy off the screen.

I'm sure he was axed for the sake of Paramounts image.  His liability was starting to outweigh his bankability.

I like his earlier stuff, but I can't stand to watch his later stuff.  Like it's been said here before, he became an egomanic.  More importantly, he's lost touch with how regular people live and behave.

I fear that Will Smith is getting perilously close to that level as well.

I've liked some of his movies over the years and I've thought he was a pretty good actor despite having a stereotyped reputation of being shallow.  But the first Mission Impossible made me angry when the movie turned out to be all about his character and the tv lead character of Jim Phelps was made into the bad guy.14.gif   Oh well, Hollywood remains a business and the "mighty" fall there like they fall anywhere else.

Reminds me of the opera prima donna who p.o.'s the stage crew in a performance of Tosca.  There was a nice, springy trampoline waiting for her when she leaped to her death from the ramparts of Castel Gandolfo in the last scene instead of a mattress.  She made several unintended reappearances after the suicide.

He's been in a few good films, but they weren't good because of him. Minority Report is a favourite of mine, but it's based on a great Philip K Dick story (like Total Recall, Blade Runner etc.). The way I judge an actor (male & female) is whether I'd give the film a look in on a quiet night at the video store. If I saw a film I didn't know that starred Sean Connery, Hugo Weaving or Morgan Freeman (for example) I'd give it a look because they are great actors that often give life to a role. I wouldn't put Tom Cruise in that category.

I was a bit disappointed with War of the Worlds. Imagine if the studio had managed to convey the effect that Orson Welles had in his radio play in a movie. Let's face it, the HGWells story has a dud ending (the Martians get a cold and die) but it can be told better than was done in the movie.

I don't really judge Tom as a person, more of an actor - Pretty well I say, he can be very good at times and other mediocure but I have seen ALOT worse.  This scientology-whatever crap is pathetic, a person's religious views are personal, give the guy a break instead of judging him by what he believes in off stage - I understand he is a shallow, egotistical and in some worlds, greedy pig, but let's look at his past performances and reflect on his achievements... And let him crash and burn on his own instead of pushing him further.

War of Worlds keeps me watching for the aliens mainly, I don't know what it is but I like to watch humanity as a whole fail... Probably why I like Sci-Fi.
