Thanks to Tropod (for making the modifying road tutorial), me and funforfree99 are now starting the Venice project 3.gif
 
The Venice Project will consist of the roads transforming into tiny waterways and the cars turning into boats

pretty nice don't you think?
 
but i still gotta convert the rest of the roads..
 
and funforfree99 will still need to work on converting the cars into boats3.gif
 
so this will be finished soon.....hopefully 9.gif

NICE!!! Good original idea ya got there. You really are doing well in the way of editing game files, nice one!

Could you do that for highways, but would it be possible to lower the elevation of them...?

I have an excuse here for the lack of a boat plugin...
 
first I modded the wrong part of the exemplar (which made the cars have boat headlights)
 
then I crashed the reader before I could savethe dat.
 
within an hour I should have this fixed.

    This venice project sounds good keep it up ALTX and funforfree, you guys are doing good. I'm looking forward to seeing Snow in SimCity 4 much like SimCity 3000: Unlimited and as well as waterways which I doubt they'll put in Rush Hour. Keep it up! This is all great!

    That's awsome! But now we could also pretend that there was a flood! But i would like to see boats, even though there will be more boats in the expansion pack.

    Here is a picture of the progress on my part, actually I am done but I will wait on ALTX before I release a modd, the small things are boats not cars.

    They overwrite the current roads ldymox, I have finished a .dat file for the ships that are there.

    Yes, same question here: in the first screenshot, you have two types of roads: standard and Venice-style.  Will we be able to do that, and will there be a smooth transition between the two, like when you connect a street to a road?  Oops, never mind, already answered, but will both streets and roads be overwritten?

    Ok so here we all are complaining about the lack of ground level Highways and we finally get the tool to edit such things and here we are creating roads meant to look like the waterways of venice. So is it not possible to make ground level highways in the same way you guys are doing this or did we just not think of it. As for the Venice mod i guess its cool although i cant see myself touching it if we can only use one or the other.

    highways use 3dm's (I think) we are just editing 2 dimensional models, if anybody knows a good 3D studio max free trial I will give it a try but I don't make any promises here.

    and also the ground level highways are 2 lanes wide with 6 lanes and right against each other, the cars will look distorted as if they were dirving on the lines if i tried that 23.gif

    You guys have a very unique idea here. I would never have thought of canals. But concerning the overwriting of roads: you said that this would overwrite them. Do you mean just the SC4paths or both (SC4paths and the FSH files). I created another street and put it in a plugin so I know it is possible to have two different types of roads. (This post may seem a little confusing22.gif)

    sorry, this will override almost every "road" in the game 23.gif

    so that means that this is for fun but not permament 3.gif

    I know it is easier just to overwrite the road FSH files, but someday, you may want to think of a way that doesn't do that. I have been able to add another street into my game through a plugin I made. Now I can make it look different than a street if I can just find where the street FSH files are... What I'm getting at is that, although it would be hardwork, it is possible to create a totally knew road type.21.gif

    (currently) it's not possible to add our own new functional road/rail/highways etc because we just don't have the knowledge to do that [yet]. So for these canals that are being done, for them to function as canals so that the automata (cars/dolphins/boats/etc) use them properly (to get from A>B), and also so that RCI and other buildings will develop, these modified canal pieces/textures need to be proper recognisable network pieces for the game (thus overriding existing road ones, so to speak) otherwise it's most likely that nothing will build. So for this, when ALTX is done, you'll get a dat plugin which you can just place in the plugins folder and remove at your own leisure.

    Well this is the plugin that I made, and I tested it and it works. I don't really know exactly how, but I saved a bunch of street-related exemplars and put them into a .dat file. Then I made a custom name and description and unique id's for everything. The result was a new "thing". It still uses the street pieces but I thought you could create new ones and maybe link them so that you get a new road.

    You've not actually created anything new..........for starters there are no FSH files with that dat plugin of yours. All you've done basically is duplicated a menu entry for the game, which at the moment for the network (and zoning) related items, is completely pointless. Pretty much most of those exempalrs you've duplicated will have served no purpose. It takes (quite) a bit more involvement and work than just duplicating an exemplar or two and changing the Instance IDs23.gif. Like I said, it's currently not within our means.
