    Edmonton January 25th 06

After finally getting in a few hours tonight I thaught I would show a small update. This picture gives a very small impression on how much I have done. The reason I don't show more is most of the work is spread thin and the big picture isn't quite there yet.

Trying to do complex refinery areas isn't easy with Simcity4. And there isn't much for costum lots so I'll be using alot of repetitive lots to get my point across. I've done a wide range of work in eastern Edmonton on the refineries and oil related areas. I wanted to give an impression and early look of what is to come.

I need to get the Industrial jobs up so I can have a better R$$ demand and keep the rest of the city growing. What I really need is a few 1x1 grass lots that proved 1000 jobs in areas like I-D CO$$ CS$$ and so on....this would help fill voids and let me really start work on areas like downtown.

SOMY's buildings are about as good as you'll get for creating refineries. And I know what you mean about not wanting to show the Henday Drive/Calgary Trail i/c just yet; I'm never entirely satisfied with my interchanges either, but at some point I run out of patience and need to go elsewhere in the region. Then much later I'll reopen that city and think, What the hell was I thinking designing this interchange this way? 10.gif

Eurytus : thanks for the link on the walls. Thats a very old picture. I have used probably 3 or 4 different versions since those ones where there. The ones you ak about are simple 1x1 texture lots. I believe those are SC4 textures aswell. You could make those in LE in probably 5minutes.
And yeah I have to mark every 2nd home historical in the etire region. One thing that really takes alot of time when building it up.

1ajs : I know it sounds like a weird lot. But I need it just to add jobs to areas and not have them seen. Alot of jobs. Technicaly I have enough jobs for the city. Which is usualy half of the res. But with some areas so far apart from each other I need small hidden ones to help demands...

Oreon : I know SOMY's lots are great. And I'm very thankfull to have them. But its only a handfull of lots. I showed a very small area of the refineries. After a few hundred duplicated oil tanks, and several duplicated refineries you'll see what I mean.
And as for the interchanges thats exactly what I've done to many times. I may finish it and be happy. Then a month later I look at it and ask why and end up doing it all over again. The whole time I did the Henday interchange I was shaking my head lol. And I dont even have ideas how to get it to look right. I think the problem is, is that I added raised land like real life. I may have to leave it all flat then do simple NAM over passes in places where the land would slowly raise and overpass the lower road.... who knows. Should be a while before I even look at it again...

    Edmonton January 26th 06

After playing around with the lots editor I made another series of transit anabled lots and a set of different 1x1 grass texture lots to give dirty industrial areas a more complex feel. I also re-did the 3x3 Oil tanks I had. Originally they where simply on grass. I added short oil reetaining walls to the lots and a pipe for a little life to the lots. Also I placed them on a dirt texture aswell.

Then I went into an area of the game I worked on a few months ago. I replaced some of the roads with more realistice small dirt roads and brushed up alot of detail. Note : These areas are far from finished but there worth a look now. I really want to get the eastern Refinery area filled in a little more.

Here are a few pictures from a small area of Edmonton. And a google picture for comparison.

Lots of realism. Comparing Google Earth images, and the representations in SC4 is almost like looking at the same thing. Another great update.

Inquisitor : Thanks, I'm very happy since google earth came out. When I startet the City I didn't have it or any detailed satellite maps. What a difference it is to have, and it's also much more quicker. For a while I used arial photos mainly. But now with a mix at times it helps me with accuracy even more.

Greekman : It's 500,000 and then some. And to boot its all mainly housing with every second one marked historical. Remember this region is 19x20 and then with the added on areas. Even filling a portion of 1.8 million squares with houses adds up fast. Wen its finished it should be well over the Edmonton regions 1,016,000 people. And mymap is missing alot of the sarrounding communities.

not sure if this has been said or not before, but if it takes this much effort to emulate a city, imagine all teh hard work that went into actually making the city.. thats why edmonton is such a unique and interesting city. i've never been there or anywhere near it, but it's obvious.

    Edmonton - Quick Facts...

For the readers of The City of Edmonton I want to bring more stories, news, and views on Edmonton to give everyone a true perspective of the City. I hope as this city continues to grow as a recreation, peoples knowledge of Edmonton and Alberta grow aswell.

Edmonton - Calgary corridor economy leads nation : The Edmonton-Calgary corridor posted a GDP per capita of $44,000 US in 2003, a whopping 47 per cent above the Canadian average, states a new TD Economics special report.

And the vaunted corridor, anchored by Calgary in the south and Alberta's capital city in the north, Edmonton, isn't just leading in Canada. Its GDP per capita is even $7,000 US higher than the American average.

The report predicts strong growth to continue over the next several years.

$1.7 billion U of A building boom : A combined $1.7 billion worth of construction projects are underway or will soon start at the University of Alberta.

Projects include the National Institute for Nanotechnology, the Health Sciences Ambulatory Learning Centre, Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and the LRT extension from the underground University station to the Health Sciences Station at street level.

The university is a key innovation and learning asset for Alberta and Canada.

Edmonton ring road takes shape :  Anthony Henday Drive continued to push its way south in 2005, as two new bridges opened across the North Saskatchewan River

Edmonton reaches 1,700 replies, and 150,000 views...

I spent a few hours over the last few days working on another area in the Strathcona Industrial area. Here is another small look at a very small fraction of the city.

1ajs : Strathcona may sound familiar if you know anything about Canada's military or Alberta's history.
-Military wise Edmonton has a few different units. One being Lord Strathcona's Horse which is often placed overseas as peacekeepers.
-And for Alberta's history.. Strathcona was originaly a city which is now a part of Edmonton's south side. Having the large city of Strathcona and Edmonton on either side of the river is one reason why Edmonton was named capital, and Strathcona was awarded the University of Alberta. Leaving Calgary out in the cold lol.

Beebs : The one to the north of the circle on the picture your refering to is the Yellowhead bridge. And the one to the west is the Capilano bridge on Wayne Gretzky Drive.

Ahaugen_05 : Thanks for your indepth reply...
-The Municipal (city Center Airport) barely handles any traffic anymore. A few months ago even more local flights where diverted to the International airport. Beyond a few flights And the Champ Car Grand Prix each summer it isnt used. I am guessing personally that within 20yrs it will be redeveloped into a totally new area of the city. A mega project. this will also allow us to have buildings over 500ft.
-For bats props and mods....I have released a few simple ones. And yeah I do have alot of costum content I have made. Problem isI dont know how to edit them or rename then. So technically they are other lots opened and altered. But they are handy...
And as for the custom newspaper, by all means go ahead....and no need to ask me...its not my original idea....alot of CJ's use them. And like you I got the idea from somewhere else lol.
