City of Edmonton - 90 degree angle maps.

I was playing around with some programs and I wanted to get the region views to look as they should from an actual satelitte picture. Here are the two region views, and the actual google view. Half of Edmonton is summer while the other is winter if your wondering about the color difference. (also when rotating, resizing, stretching, and expanding the pictures may be slightly off on either the width or hieght).

That's is sooo awesome. I have a question, though. About how big is a single, medium sized city in the game? Thanks.44.gif

Wonderful city journal, I finally got through all 52 pages, I admit it took me hours over the course of a couple days, but I did it 16.gif

How did you do your airport? I really like it. Also, is your Edmonton map available? I know you worked very hard on it, but its so great! I was hoping to build a city on it 19.gif

Its almost perfect with the exception that St. Albert is off kilter by about 15 degrees counter clockwise, fool.

    Yeah, im totally not serious.

I am pretty amazed that a lot of the major arteries that run through the suburbs are so straight. Edmonton looks a lot like many medium sized American cities. I think one of the major differences is that most of the metro population is part of the central city that covers a larger area...where in the US the many inner suburbs would be several seperate municipalities.

1ajs : I used 3 different programs and some math to figure out how to alter the angled region view to look like your directly above it. I'll still keep up my regular view updates with one of these now and then or upon request.

Greenie123 : A medium map is approx. 2km by 2km in the game. The scale I use is slightly different and can be viewed on page49.

tbar220 : Thanks again for taking the time to look threw the older pages. One thing about having a large CJ is newer members miss out on alot of the things that make the CJ what it is in its entirety.
The Airport is a special mod that a friend gave to me. One condition was I don't share it... So I have to keep my word on that one.
And as for the map. As on earlier pages you can get my email newjersey73@hotmail.com . If you contact me I can MSN it to you. I won't email it however due to being lazy.

Electrocash : St. Albert isn't off by 1 degree. And thanks for noting your joking. I don't need another page dedicated to showing exactly how accurate this CJ is.
As for american cities having many different suburbs that are different cities in them selves, Edmonton has annexed several cities over the past 100yrs. We still have 10-20 Cities sarounding Edmonton knowing as the Capital City region. There is talk of a few of those cities being annexed in the next few years... I can't say if it will happen. But I'm hoping it does.
Also the areas with the straight roads are atleast 20yrs old if not more. The Canadian plains where at one time divided up into sections. When a large city like Edmonton was made and expanded city planners many decades ago placed major roads every two farms. Approx 17 blocks. I learned this from recreating the city and seeing how this is shown over and over threwout the city. You can also see this in the game version or real life.

    City Center Airport 2nd draft
    A work in progress...

This is a small update to an area I showed a while ago. I almost didn't show it because there are some small things that need fixed like the NE area of the runway and a few other things. I'm sure if you take a look you'll see where I have put in the time and effort and see the areas where I need more work. When I note an area is in a draft state it means there is still additional work and areas that need more effort for the level of recreation I am looking for. A medium map like this can take well over 24hrs of work to get any level of previewable work.

Edmonton's City Center Airport is the 2nd largest of Edmonton's 4 regional airports. It handles mainly small aircraft and is home to the Edmonton Grand Prix each summer. This years Champ Car race which was also Edmontons first had the highest attendance for Champ Car (cart). The only thing I don't like about the City Center Airport is it limits our skyline to a 500ft level (approx). The Edmonton International Airport is just a few km south of my regional recreation.

Amazing!  I have flown out of the Municipal a few times, and your realism is stunning.  Good job!  Are you going to extend the map to include the International as well?

West Edmonton Mall - Nov 15th

While at West Edmonton Mall I figured I would take some photos of the areas I visited. I can go to West Ed for hours on end without shopping. Its more a huge entertainment complex. Everything from a Casino, Waterpark, Amuesment Park, 115 places to eat, Animals, golf, you name it....

Some quick facts about the areas seen...
-West Edmonton Mall is 5.3 million sq ft. And the worlds largest Mall.
-The World Water Park is the worlds largest indoor water park. It is 10 acres in size, and can hold up to 5,500 people. It also includes over 15-20 waterslides and the worlds largest indoor wave pool.
-The bungee jump seen at the world water park is the worlds tallest indoor bungee jump at 106 feet.
-The Ice Palace is a full size NHL rink.
-The Sea Caverns are home to some animals that can only be seen at the mall and no where else in Alberta.

This is a small fraction of what the mall has to offer. But this is a few of the things at the mall to do on any given day...

    EdmontonPage52.jpg

    000EdmontonContents2.jpg

Edmonton recently opened the far southwest area of the Anthony Henday Drive. A section of ring road Edmonton is currently building. The new section includes the first road bridge spanning the North Saskatchewan river since 1968 when the Capilano was built.

On my way home from West Edmonton Mall (which the outline can be seen in bright white on the maps) I drove the new stretch of freeway. I haven't seen that side of Edmonton that the Anthony Henday presents. I was shocked at the growth in that area of the city. Edmonton is currently under another construction and population boom. The difference is I see other areas grow day to day...coming across a whole new side of your hometown after 25 years is a different feeling.

To create the new area I had to actualy take out roads that I had previously placed. The freeway rips right threw farms and older roads and streets. I also had to alter the map I use and do alot by eye. None the less it is very close to being as accurate as SC allows. For the river crossing I had to give up and build a land bridge. I'm happy with the way it looks. You can see how bad the angles where off on the previous version just so I could span the river.

    Edmonton Replies....

Sloppet : I should have some more ingame pictures soon.

Sorchin : West Ed is a small city with 22-25,000 employs and up to 100,000 people a day in it. Also the addition of 2 ten story towers for res and com should help your statement lol.

Hyped up boy : I'm glad you enjoyed it... to me its just something to do every now and then. But many who travel here enjoy all the different attractions in that area.

Mr Beer : thats not 24hrs to complete a medium map. Thats about how many hours of work go into it before I will even attemp to show it.

    advance to the Grey Cup.

For everyone who isn't Canadian, Canada has an (american style) football league, the CFL. The Edmonton Eskimos beat the BC Lions yesterday 28-23 and advancing to the finals to play the Montreal Alouttes for the 3rd time in 4yrs. Edmonton last won in 2003.

    Good Luck Eskimos

    Unbelievable precision.
Those regional shots and sattelite maps are really cool. I agree with your assesment of about 17 blocks per mile. In Brandon, the older section, a grid layout has about 17 blocks per mile.
Your pictures of Edmonton are a real nice extra to find in a Cj. Really nice work!
