Stolen Car Stereo

I don't believe it! My mom's car's stereo was JUST stolen 30 minutes from the start of me making this thread. It happened in the parking lot of the Cinemark here in Plano (Near Dallas.) It costs $700!!! Although, the good news is, that thye have found some fingerprints on the door handle.

I forgot to say how. This is supposedly what happened:

We go in to see Pirates of the Carribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest. We come out of the theater and get into our car. 2 seconds later, my mom sees that the entire radio is gone, the dashboard cracked open, wires left where the stereo was, the door handle extended a little, the window cracked a bit, and the wiring in the entire car messed up. She couldn't even start her car! And, all of our stuff had been gone through. (In the front of the car anyway.) If they had searched some more, I'm sure they would've taken more than the radio. Such as my PSP, a $500 vase, and some letters that had our address on it. Fortunately, the letters wern't gone through, otherwise, they wouldn't have had time to GET THE OTHER TWO STEREOS IN THE OTHER TWO CARS!

Police say that they were able to unlock the door by using a screwdriver (most likely) two wedge under the door handle of the car. They were then able to mess up the wiring in the keyhole of the door in order to unlock it. Obviously, they used the screwdriver to partially remove the ENTIRE dashboard face plate, which, in turn, messed up the ignition. They were then able to easily unplug the stereo and take it away. They then went through our stuff. Luckily, they only went through the front of the car. They then went on to two other cars. For the other two cars, one car's stereo was stolen (In addition to our car), and the other car's radio's faceplate was removed, but the car's stereo wasn't stolen.

Let's just hope this doesn't happen again.

lmao @ sloppet!!

Katie, chill out, it's just a "thing", not exactly life threatening...I've had 3 stereo's stolen from various cars over the years, now I just remove the faceplate and take it with me..best deterrent there is. Stuff happens...that's life

I feel your anger daddyo117272,

Over the years I have had a couple of cars stolen and have had cars broken into at least a half dozen times or more, mostly for stereos.  There was one time when all that was taken (broken glass and all) was a lousy six month parking sticker!!! 26.gif    Another time it was a briefcase (which I don't leave unattended in cars anymore 37.gif) and all it had in it was a Bible.   I hope they read it. 2.gif

Anyway, I hope they either catch the thief (thieves) and or you collect the amount of insurance due you and that your family regains its peace of mind.

Actually the best deterrent to theft is to not have anything to be stolen to begin with.... works for me 3.gif

On a more serious note, thats unfortunate for that to have happened. You're lucky it was just the stereo and not the entire car.

all criminals are stupid, otherwise they'd be able to earn a living....

However, we were burgled once and you get such a sense of violation, almost physical...

Joe, you must have the worst luck of anyone I know or have had some nice cars/stereos to attract so much undue attention. 33.gif

Sorry to hear that daddyo117272, my parents had their car radio stolen once a long time ago as well and at the time it was a brand new car. It has never happened since then though.

There is an old saying in UK

An Englishmans home is his castle.

To have that "Castle" degraded and invaded by a disgustingly inadequate social misfit, (Politically correctly known as a 14 year old burglar) is the biggest insult that can possibly be made. It is almost as bad as the feeling a woman gets after being raped.

Well it is spread out over 18 years of living, going to school, worshipping, and working in an area that sees it's share of crime.  None of my cars, let alone stereos, have ever been anything to write home about and I continue to find it amazing over what so little some people will commit crimes for.

I've never been mugged, but I know wife was glad when I no longer had to do field work.  If there is a sense of violation or a loss of security over property theft and vandalism, I can only imagine, but probably not truly comprehend, how much worse it could be like for someone who has been mugged, physically harmed, or raped.

I have a stereo with a detachable face

I take it off everytime I go to a place I'm not aware of

I'm shocked that some idiot would go to a movie theatre to steal a stereo system

I assume this was done in daylight ...which makes it even weirder....movie theatre = packed with cars and possible witnesses...daylight hours

easy to spot someone doing something odd

I haven't been to plano in years, since I lived there til I was seven

A certain percentage probably, maybe even most of it.  But I also wouldn't be surprised if some of this were bad youths who saw a free opportunity to do the evil thing for fun.

....And even though those things tend to pique my interest, my speculations probably does little for others who are victimized by crime... sigh.  34.gif

defcon pilot: Ditto.  It always sucks when something like that happens.  There are too many idiots out there who do things like that. 15.gif

Ages ago (well, about a decade ago) our car was stolen when I was about 4.  It was an old Ford Crown Victoria Sedan.  After that we had to buy a new car, a 1996 Toyota Avalon, since we needed two cars or else my dad would take the only one to work and then my mom couldn't go anywhere.  We've had it since then.

This is horrible, but I feel your pain. My mom had her Nissan Maxima stolen once, then she witnessed

people attempt to steal her new Lexus SC400 (note the word attempt). So I know how you feel.

While an 'expert' theif might not be affected, a well known and expensive alarm system seems to deter most theft.  At least it has in my case.  I can't even remember how many times a car sitting right next to mine had windows shattered or door handles jarred open - but my vehicle was completely untouched.  (And I have a very bad habit of leaving everything in open view)

I think the shiny CLIFFORD sticker on each window has the same effect as the home security signs in people's front yards.  Plus no matter what is opened on my car, whether it is a door, trunk, hood, whatever - my car will go absolutely berserk, the engine will disable, and I will be notified about what exactly is happening on my key-chain reciever as long as I'm within 200 yards(2 football fields distance).

It's a peace of mind that I definately take for granted.  I'm sure an 'intelligent' car thief could get around any car alarm, but luckily there aren't too many of those around.  20.gif

Let's hope the idiots get caught, daddyo.  But just remember, you only lost a couple of material goods that can be replaced.  The idiots, on the other hand, have risked and given up their right to be free in civil society.  14.gif  They'll get what's comin.

Well, think about this. In most cases, I would rather have the ENTIRE CAR stolen, rather than just a radio. Which would be easier to catch? A stolen car, or a stolen radio?

    Exactly.

Anyways, these guys were clearly proffesionals. The police could tell that they had done it quickly because they right away knew what they wanted. Plus, it IS wierd that it was in plain daylight with many witnesses. Although, it does make sense because it was parked on the side of the building rather than in the front.

TheSonofGray: Wow. What a security system.

Just to let you all know, they haven't caught them yet. Although, I'm sure they will be eventually. 1 out of 10 criminals do that once and never again. I'm sure they'll probably get caught doing it again to some other car.

The police have gotten an idea. They planted a "decoy" car in the same place as ours was when we were robbed. The decoy car was a Black Corvette with a $1300 stereo and boom-box in the back seat. The face-plate for the stereo is golden. SHINY golden. Now tell me that a single thief in that entire parking lot won't go for that.
