I lost the ability to right-click to view those extra options like hide all and convert to mesh. Does anyone know how to get that ability back. And yes my right mouse button still works, just not in gmax.

Um...

Try this.

Go to Customize | Preferences (in the top menu) and go to the Viewports tab. About halfway down on the right hamd side is 'Right Click Menu Over Selected Only'. It works for me and it is unticked so I suggest making sure yours is unticked.

Gary

Oops, haha. I found a solution to this earlier today. Or late last night, I can't remember. But I searched the TurboSquid forum. Interestingly enough someone replied almost like you to that question. (Umm, buy a new mouse?). But apparently it seems to be a pretty common irrational problem. The right mouse button works everywhere but inside the viewports.

What I apparently needed to do was go to Customize/Customize User Interface/Quads/Advanced Options/Reset to Startup.

However, I Uninstalled, reinstalled. Did that, uninstalled. Reinstalled. Did that. Uninstalled. Reinstalled. Did that. Restarted computer. And it finally worked. So I think all I had to do was do that and restart my computer. Or maybe just restart my computer. I don't know. Either way it works now.

But thanks anyway Gary. Through all my searching of the User Interface and customize areas I never saw that little option. One would think it would pop out since it does say 'Right Click'. I must be blind. haha.

Here's a stupid question: How do I import models? I have various objects saved that I want to use on more than one building, but I can't figure out how to get them there...

EDIT: Nevermind, I got it. Turns out you have to use 'merge' instead of 'import.' Who knew?

Hey Everyone,

Im working on my first freeway sign and ive run into my first problem.  This is what the model looks like in GMAX:
<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Model%2001%20-%20Phase%201%20(Part%206A).JPG align=baseline>

Notice the white trim.  Alright, when i export it to the S4 Plugin Manager and Lot Editor then to the game, it looks like this:

<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Model%2001%20-%20Phase%201%20(Part%207).JPG align=baseline>

Notice that the white trim is GONE.  Ive done this about 4 times and I cant, no matter what I do (be it add the lines to the sign via Modifier --> edit spline --> attach multi, adjusting the thickness of the lines) get the sign into the game without losing the lines.  What the heck is ging on?  Any ideas?

i really dont know....but a work around would be to make the sign texture in your favorite graphics editor with those lines painted on....then just add it as a texture to the surface of the sign....saves the fiddling about with splines and such.....anyways i find it much easier this way

I'm making some signs, and it seems BAT is squeezing them all vertically when rendering? I think you can also see it in artforce_1's images. So I was wondering if there are any specs on this so I can compensate properly on my models..

Hi, I have a problem when I try to render.

It does the thumbnail ok but when it gets to south and closest zoom it does half and then my whole computer freezes. The mouse won't move and if I leave it it does not come on.

If I render in medium it gets to the closest zoom, second side and does half but then freezes

Thanks in advance for help,

GM51

PS - did search but did not work.

It sounds like you are trying to render more than you computer will handle.  If you could post the computer spec's that might be helpful.

I would say you might be a little short on memory for a complex BAT, but you might solve that with an increase of virtual memory, but that is a maybe.

Could you give some details about the scene you are trying to render?

Here it is

corp0ej.jpg

It has just over 20,000 polys. Tried merging onto a new scene but did not work. 8 stories high plus spire. I cant think of anything more. Textures aren't too bad. Building is the same on the other side.

Thanks,

GM51

Boy, I don't know, it shouldn't be any trouble to render.  Do you have trouble with other renders?  Maybe someone else has an idea.

One of the first BAT's I did in the wrong grid, and it was of course 16 times as big as it should have been, about a half a mile square, 3 miles tall, it took me a while to figure out why it failed to render.  That was the one and only time that happened.

I am working with P4 3.6GHz and 2GB of memory.  I have done renders that took a couple of hours to finish.  But I don't think the mouse freezes while it is rendering, but the window won't refresh until it goes to a new view.  Pmillers Hobit Dock took over two hours to render but it has over 350,000 poly's.

It must just be too much for my computer which sucks. I'll just have to rely on other people.

Thanks for trying,

Hi - I'm having the same problem as 6underground on page 2, but can't seem to locate an answer

After saving a BAT, I reopened the file only to have the following message:

File open failed: C:\gmax\gamepacks\BAT\scenes\<filename>. gmax

Other files open fine, I tried renaming it...but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know a fix for this?

Thanks
Matt

In short, there is an autoback file in c:\gmax which auto-saves every now and then, so by loading up that file, I didn't loose too much work...I am once again, calm, centred and happy :-)

Sorry, everyone, in advance if this is in the wrong topic.

When I try to load up the BAT I get an error message: "GMAXLOC environment variable not found". Now, what does this mean? I can use regular GMAX all right, and re-installing the BAT doesn't change it. How can I fix it?

How come my BATs all show up tiny when i put them on a lot?I think the building is supposed to be on a 4x4 Lot, but probably only needs a 3x3! it looks like a 1x1 or less!! Im still learning how to use BAT and i probably missed a step somewhere, if anybody can help i would appreciate some info!!Thanks

I am learning to BAT as well.

Your buildings appear too small because your model was too small.

when you open gmax you get 4 ports these are set at the correct zoom point, contrary to past thoughts about this.

But SimCity4's actual size, relative to gmax modeling, is it's farthest away zoom point, not it's closest.

If you use Gmax to model for the DS plug-in; your models/characters, must be much larger. This allows the appearance of, more accurate detailing.

In SC4, you want a standard garage to be 008.00x012.00x however tall you wish the wall. I am very new to this as well so bare with me.

EDIT: these parameters are actually closer

In SC4, you want a standard, single car garage to be, 0008.00 wide by 0012.00

long/deep and wall height should be, 0004.50 gu's to 0005.00 gu's

Notice: I added in the zeros, that are not appearing in your gmax XYZ parameter windows.

This is why SC4's BAT plug-in is not so popular at Turbo Squid.com, the place where gmax download and support are hosted. BAT plug-in is okay, but the models we are creating are actually very very tiny things! We are making litlle bobbles and they are making massive giants, whos' foot step alone, would crush several of SC4's city blocks!

EDIT: This is going to get very long, as I have decided to do a full blown total tutorial on, how I learned gmax from beginning to end.
I will use a new thread in BAT forum for this.
I will make this tutorial a complete package from making my first box, spline, garage, lighting, house, industry, farm, skyscraper and all the little shortcuts, I find in between.
The key will be in the grammatics, as  this will limit the amount of images, I must use to make things clear.
So I will search up a gmax definitions list somewhere too.

...somebody's gotta do it, right?

Just a quick question, I wanted to know when using gmax with the bat, how to 'snap to grid' objects.

I searched all the menus and its a bit over me for now.

I've got a problem, as you can see from the image below. I added the spotlights with the nitelite prefix and everything worked fine until I rendered this building. The final renders are fine and can be accessed below this main image. The problem is that when it is done doing the previews for day and night, the whole building turns black, except where the lights are shining. Not even black and distinguishable. Entirely black. When I preview again, everything still previews fine and no damage is done to the final product. Restarting gmax does nothing, nor does reloading the file or restarting the computer.

Here's the first kicker. Before I render or preview I always save a backup copy of the file. But, when I open that backup, regardless of whether or not I restarted gmax or my computer, it is ALSO BLACK!!! Never been preview before, but it is black.

Here's kicker #2. When I delete the nightlights, the problem goes away!

messed.jpg

For renders of the building, click below:

Day     Night

I decided it wasn't a nightlight problem but a more general gmax/BAT problem. Any ideas/help? Thanks in advance.

@skyfire2275: This is actually a very simple thing to fix. Right click on the word Perspective in the perspective viewport and you will be presented with a menu. On that menu is Configure - select that. When the pop-up opens, on the left hand side you will see Default Lighting ... select either of the options and make sure you check the square box beside Default Lighting. Hey Presto - it's fixed!
