I've added some more detail to the back wall... and ...
    /idealbb/files/Render

Work has begun on the front atrium.  The outer rim is just sketched in, but the details of the atrium lobby are shaping up.  The centerpiece is a Koi pond, if you look closely, there are several colors of Koi in there.  There are raised sitting areas on the sides, with tables and stools.  There will be more benches in the rest of the open area, as well as planters and a couple trees.  Thats my next challenge.. modeling trees...

    /idealbb/files/Render

The 2 green sections of walls will become the entrances to this lobby.

Great looking building, i especially like the different styles you have incorporated into the front elevations, nice oriel windows on the top floor, its the little details that make a lot of difference, just as in reality.
I know that Brenda Xne has created some beautiful new trees for her monorail station, perhaps she could help you there. Then just needs some roof junk, nice work, many thanks9.gif

Still on the to do list :
    - Roof Junk
    - Office details .  Just a few shapes to trhow behind the windows, so everything doesn't look empty.
    - lighting.  This will be the real challenge.  Everything behind the glass is shadowed, and I want the atrium to be bright.

I got the atrium glass up this morning.  Still need to finish the top glass, then I'll post an update.

Here's the glassed in Lobby area.  It came out well, but really darkens up the interior.  I'll play with lighting after a few more details.  I'm not happy with the end wall, and the pond looks kinda funny without a walkway, which is planned.

Well, I guess I've figured out why there are no glass atriums.... they don't render well.  After several attempts, I think I'll shelve this project.
    /idealbb/files/Prof

I think going through the layers of glass distorts things too much.  In this pic, the back atrium has a lot of noise:.

    /idealbb/files/Prof

And in this one, it looks better from this angle.  But this is with a LOT of spot lights inside, and it is still too dark.  Any more, and the glare gets bad.

SimGoober, are you sure that your glass texture isn't two-sided?  Also, yes, you do have to go overboard with lighting, and any textures on objects behind glass needs to be brighter than you think it'd need to be to show well, but it is possible.  Is that model a draft export?  If it is, trust me (from experience on this matter) it'll look MUCH better on high quality.

Great looking building so far - it'd be a shame to see it shelved.

I don't think I did two sided, but I will double check.  I'm actually considering deleting the glass from the atriums to see how that works.  And that is at high quality, took 4 hours to render.  The pics are low quality, to get them down to size for the threads.

I'm going to give this one a rest for a few days, and look at it fresh.  In the meantime I was on the road this week, and decided to try a couple more hotels.

This Best Western was across from the Hampton Inn.  I shrunk the picture, and it distorted the bricks...
    /idealbb/files/Best
I started work on it, and it is amazing how fast it came together.  I need to work on nightlights, and then tweak a lot and it should be done this weekend.

    /idealbb/files/Render

I took a few liberties with the design ( I didn't like the corner lobby), but it's the same basic layout.

EDIT : Best Western is now on the exchange.  I have a pic of a Fairfield Inn I'll work on next.

The hotels you do are awesome! Do you think you will eventually get to department stores too?

I'm working on a long list of ideas, but who knows what will get priority... I am working on a couple more real hotels, and have the beginnings of an idea for a larger, more resort one that will be my own design.  I also have seen some smaller office buildings I want to try.  And some strip centers.  I like the more suburban look, as where I live, we have a medium sized city, with a lot of sprawl.  our highest skyscraper is 20 stories. It's new, and I'm planning on BATing that one too.

Got your latest hotel, classic suburban/airport architecture, great work, you've captured it perfectly. I hope you do go back to the glass lobby building, its an amazing atrium, in a lot of buildings with atriums like that in sunnier climes the glass is tinted to deflect sunlight so the insides would  necessarily appear darker in that senario. You've got some nice architectural detailing on the building and it would be a shame to waste all your hard work by not completing it.8.gif

Just for fun, here is a pic about half done on the Fairfield Inn.  I'll probably do more tomarrow.
    /idealbb/files/Render

The roof aren't textured yet, but everything else is.  I find it easier to texture things before I clone anything.  It also helps me get a feel for how things are coming together.

Here's the Fairfield Inn, getting close to complete...

I need to do a little tweaking, and work on a pool/patio for out back.  Seeing as this hotel has no roof junk, I am also going to build a mehanical are for out back.

This shouldn't take more than a day or two to wrap up, then I have a couple new ideas for the professional center, to see about fixing it.

Actually, for a building like that, the roof junk (HVACs and such) would probably be hidden underneath the gable of the roof, or some of them would indeed be in a walled-in area around back. There'd probably be some pipes sticking out and vents hidden in empty spaces between the top of the floors and the roof surface. I'm amazed at the work you've done lately, and you've really improved quite a bit in a short amount of time.

    Keep it up!

SimGoober, the textures on your Fairfield Inn are perfect -- and the roofs on those hotels look exactly like that!

If you're determined to add objects to boost the realism, I'm picturing a big dumpster out back, or maybe two.  But I'm not going to begrudge you a lack of those kinds of details, since my buildings are usually less realistic, and more idealistic. 10.gif

Drewz15 is right about the height, perfect for suburban sprawl, and the nightlighting on those stairs, perfect, just perfect.9.gif25.gif
And thanks vm for taking another look at the prof centre, its too good to waste

I spent a little while, ok a few hours, and made a pool and mechanical area, then decided the lot looked better without them... ah well.

    The lot is now posted.

I am now going to go back and look at the professional center again.  I'll be pretty busy the next few days, so it might take a while.

Professional Center is getting betterm but needs more time.  I started a new hotel.  It's based on a picture I founf of the Embassy Suites overlooking Niagara falls. Here's the pic :
    /idealbb/files/ES___Niagara_Falls_01.jpg

    This one will take a while.  I started on one of the towers, and it's coming along. No textures yet, but the form is there;

    /idealbb/files/Embassy

I don't have any good pictures of the base, but I have one of the other side, about half way from the top down, it is mostly glass for overlooking the falls.  This one should challenge me a bit, and take some time.

I haven't seen this myself, but the structure at the base resembles a parking garage.  Does that sound right to anyone?

Here's some current pics.  For some reason this building won't preview well.  I get a tiny shot, that doesn't show any detail, so I exported it and put it on a lot for a test.  It is obviously still under construction, and when I rotated it to get the best angle, I forgot to reset the LODs so little pieces got chopped....

excellent work on all the buildings

with the smaller building that has the atrium, i would suggest just removing the atrium altogether and release it without it, it is one that iw ould download and use in my cities

    everything else looks wonderful
