About This File

This Chicago house was built by Jon Kaifer in 1884, in the Wicker Park neighborhood. Kaifer, a baker, built an beautiful building in the popular Queen Anne style. Featuring an ornate cornice, almost all of the building's ornamentation is on the front and the left side.

Soon after Kaifer built his house, the neighborhood's demographics shifted. The area became the largest center of Polish culture outside of Poland, Mr. Kaifer, his fate unknown, sold the building to be subdivided into apartments. Each floor was divided into two apartments, except the attic and basement, which were kept intact. Recent immigrants crowded the tiny apartments, but they kept the building in good condition.

The building remained apartments until the early 1960s, when developers entered the neighborhood, which was now middle-class again, and built a shopping center. The center occupied 2 1/2 blocks, leading to this venerable old building's demolition.
