Wisner Apartments, a SHUR Project Release by JBSimio
Welcome to the Skipjack Historical Urban Restoration Project! Learn more about the history of this project here. The Wisner Apartment building holds a prominent place in the SHUR Project history as being the first building to be saved by the fledgling organization. Many city leaders at the time scratched their heads at this choice, failing to understand why this building would be considered so important. Edna Harris, a founding member of the SHUR Project, fell in love with the front façade of this simple building. Knowing that windows were not enough to warrant tax breaks or local preservation grants, she dug tirelessly until she finally found a reason the council would listen to. It turned out that long before falling to the local slum lords, this building was actually a temporary home to the city’s first district court judge, Hiram Wisner. Although he lived here only a short time, his historical significance in the city’s politics was enough to convince city leaders that this was a building worth saving.
The Wisner Apartment building is named after an old building on
Wisner Street in Jackson, Michigan. I have included both low and medium wealth versions of the apartment building. I also added medium wealth office versions, both growable and ploppable, because in reality this building now serves as a law office across the street from the county court building.
