About This File
Plattenbauten are residential buildings composed of pre-fabricated concrete elements. Due to the highly standardized and modular construction, they can be assembled very quickly and were used to provide affordable housing for many people in a short time. They are a typical sight in any ex-socialist country, for example the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). Plattenbau (literally "slab building") or the short form Platte have become emblematic terms.
The first blueprints for these buildings in the former GDR can be traced back to the Bauhaus style. In the 70's and 80's, an immense demand for residential buildings had to be satisfied somehow. By means of a few simle and clear shapes, mass housing for the simple citizens should be provided. To some extent, this led to huge Plattenbau complexes, which are now just a few mouse clicks away from your SimCity. Just use the [CTRL] key to zone 4x5, 5x4 or 5x5 tiles of dense residential. If the required conditions apply, you will be rewarded with a complex you might see in the Marzahn district of Berlin, in Schwedt, Rostock or any other East German city.
These lots are part 3 of the first set of large lots in contemporary European architecture style, consisting of allotments for low density, 50's suburban residential estates for medium density and these pre-fabricated tenement buildings for high density. The basic idea was to offer a possibility to create urban districts with an individual character using lots of the same size that can overgrow each other as the city develops, but keep the character of the district. For example, if you overzone one of these lots with the next higher density, you will sooner or later see how the area gets upgraded to a bigger lot from this set - unless you have any other Euro-style lots of this size installed in your plugins folder.
Since these buildings have been erected with average worker families in mind, they have been implemented in SimCity as R-
