About This File
This is a map of Eastern Long Island and the Great Peconic Bay.
Some 1380 square mile in area, Long Island is the largest island in the continental United Sates. It was the venue for one of the first battles of the American Revolution, the Battle of Long Island, fought on August 27, 1776.
Long Island is a paradox between remote wildreness and urban sprawl. The eastern end is very rural and quite remote. The western end is densely populated and very urban. It is home to the New York boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens and the suburban counties of Nassau and Sufflok.
The original document, an old NASA photo, says that this is a view of "the Great Peconic Bay near Montauk". Actually, I think the correct location is probably closer to the Hamptions or Shinnecock.
Anyway, for you Long Island fans...enjoy! The map is 1025 x 1025, and not to scale.
