NEW SCOTLAND - ATKINSVILLE - 004 In New Scotland's western, mountainous region lies Pulaski County. Named for the legendary Polish-American Revolutionary War general Casimir Pulaski, the county is home to some of the most beautiful vistas in all of the state. The surrounding Bundok Mountains define the region, and provide a scenic backdrop for its cities. Although smaller than neighboring New Basel, Pulaski County's seat, Atkinsville, is small, lovely town in the Bundoks. Historic Queen Street dominates Atkinsville's small downtown. Immediately south of where this picture was taken is the Vahlbusch Municipal Park, named for the first president of the private college (now a public state university) that made Atkinsville the town that it is today. Nearby Bowie Street (named for the legendary wilderness extraordinaire by the same name) features more of Atkinsville's historic downtown. Shops in this picture include the First Mate's Bookshelf (far right), a bookstore that was first established in 1910. To its left is the Black Sheep Cafe, a coffeehouse that has served Atkinsville residents since its founding by a World War II veteran in the late 1940s. At the corner of Bowie and Queen streets is the Jackson Hotel and General Store, named in honor of President Andrew Jackson, who allegedly stayed at the hotel sometime during his presidency. Just north of downtown is the densely packed, but quaint, Umstead neighborhood. The area's residents are mostly middle-class, but many blue-collar workers call the neighborhood home. Most of the houses here were build at the turn of the century. Being just south of the banks of the Metis River gives Umstead's residents speactacular views of not only the river, but also the mountains that lay right across it. Immediately south of downtown is the Glenwood neighborhood. This area is home to many of Atkinsville's factory workers; due to its cheap rent, however, many students at nearby Jefferson State University call the area home. In the next entry, we will showcase Jefferson State University, and the beautiful countryside surrounding Atkinsville.

NEW SCOTLAND - HAVERKAMP/NSU TEASER - 003 When South African architect Maarten Haverkamp came to Dumfries in 1901 as a refugee of the Second Boer War, he had a dream for the area surrounding Loudon Square. After visiting several other American cities, he drew up designs for a neighborhood. At the time, the area around Loudon Square was mostly thirty/forty year old tenements, and the city gladly granted Haverkamp permission to redesign the square and several of the surrounding blocks. Thus, the Haverkamp neighborhood was born. His design choices included beautifying the park, constructing a large number of row homes around it, and planting numerous oaks in the sidewalk. The neighborhood is now mostly inhabited by students from the nearby New Scotland University. COMMENTS - MCALLISTER/GEORGETOWN/NEW SCOTLAND CAPITOL KSCHIMDT - "Nice neighbourhood; SAM may help to older the streets, one way arrows size can be reduced if necessary in the NAM settings, well done!" Thanks for the advice!

McAllister/Georgetown/New Scotland Capitol - 002
Cacciatoria posted a City Journal entry in New Scotland
NEW SCOTLAND - MCALLISTER/GEORGETOWN/NEW SCOTLAND CAPITOL - 002 Today, I will be presenting northern Dumfries, and the New Scotland Capitol building. Immediately north downtown Dumfries is the neighborhood of McAllister, named for the banker who originally developed the land in the late 1800s. Many of the homes in this neighborhood date back to the 1950s or even earlier. As stated in the teaser, many of Dumfries' and New Scotland's most elite citizens live in this neighborhood. Late in the afternoon and early in the morning, rush hour hits Valley Avenue before it goes into downtown Dumfries. Like in McAllister, the houses along Valley Avenue are older when compared to some of the newer buildings in downtown. A few blocks south of McAllister is the neighborhood of Georgetown. Located near the heart of Dumfries, Georgetown is home to many boarding houses, which are rented out by New Scotland lawmakers during legislative sessions. The local HOA has tried in vain to get the Westmoreland Jewelry Store (bottom left) to remove the palm tree in the front lawn. Built in 1876, the New Scotland capitol has been home to both houses of the New Scotland legislature and the offices of the Governor of the State ever since. Tours are available at 10am, 12pm and 2pm. COMMENTS URBAN CONSTANTA: "Interesting start." Thanks, I'll try to keep it interesting as well as I can!- 4 Comments

NEW SCOTLAND - DUMFRIES TEASER - 001 Pictured here are homes along Valley Avenue, shortly before the road divides into the two one-way streets which go straight through downtown Dumfries. Most of the homes in this area are from the mid-twentieth century, and are owned by the Dumfrien elite and some of New Scotland's higher ranking state employees.
