so a minor update. playing SC3KU with proton or wine seems to be the best option if you want a tinkering free experience. but the loki version still works! here it is on Manjaro running the latest KDE using the latest stable kernel, nvidia drivers, etc. might require some tweaking for the audio but with the tweaks to get alpha centauri working it should be doable provided the correct 32bit audio library is linked to enable OSS support.- 16 Replies

So I got my hair cut today. Took a picture wearing my cloak and band-o-gear. I like the new hair though, it hides my large forehead. And they did a great job with the bangs and getting a shag haircut while keeping it just below the shoulders in length.

Why should the person above you be banned? V2

Banned because there are better movies than Zoolander. -
Here's me working on the jeep with my band-o-gear for storage.

erm... one sec I have something quite old... if 1980 is old for a PC game lol. Now this is running the 1991 open source version of Zork compiled to run in the linux terminal. the original game was released in 1980. so I hope this counts. if not here's the actual original 1981 DOS release running in modern terminal using FROTZ Gods yes, I want to see this! big fan of space war and the old pdp computers given they were what kickstarted the early hacker/tinkerers at MIT at the model railroad club way back when. -
Currently? I'm re-reading Hacking the Xbox by Andrew "bunnie" Huang.

4GB Patch not being applied!
Leo_the_robot replied to UnknownPro's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
TLDR, try it with Lutris or Proton, they often use a script which enables LAA if you want to stick with just straight up wine, you're going to need winetricks. so, it's a bit technical but you need to first create a 32 bit wine prefix. copy the SC4 executable and the 4GB patch into that prefix. run it there. then copy them back to the 64bit wine prefix. with this it should recognize LAA. instructions taken from similar problems in the wine db forums. https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=32854 -
@Bruh Man Surprisingly yeah, a lot of music in that era was tracker, it was a brief moment where it surpassed midi before MP3 became the main form of music. I'll have to get my disc drive fixed so I can double check of course since I have SC3KU as a physical copy but I'm fairly certain it's tracker based with high quality sound samples.

So not midi, but SC3K used XM files which are similar in that they're tracker music, this was later converted into MP3's for the official soundtrack release. basically tracker music is like midi music but it uses sound samples stored in the file rather than samples stored in a sound card or software synthesizer, both types of music were used in computing pre-2000 and were phased out in favor of MP3 and occasionally OGG files.

Hidy ho simtropolites, sorry for my long period of silence but work and life has been keeping me busy. Got a GF, rebuilt my jeep and got it fully working, rebuilt my computer, twice. and I got my A+ certification in general computer knowledge, currently working on networking certifications because from my perspective college is a bit of waste with no jobs for when you get out. also got into Geocaching! which is fun. anyway I'm back, I'll try to drop in from time to time in the technical, general, and linux posts to say hi and share what I can to help!

So, a few bits here, First, you're not the only one having issues with modern 64 bit linux @Malouine unfortunately it's been a struggle for me, but it worked on Pop! OS 18.10 which I was running at the time of that screenshot. did you try the updated installer here?: https://tetration.github.io/Simcity3000_Modding_Revival/linux_installer_page.html the primary issue is exactly that, the 64bit OS has issues linking the game to the 32bit libraries, this also causes a sound issue. I've been researching this for the past year or so but the only real solution I have for the Loki games on linux is to run them on a 32bit distro, which I think there's a few ways to dual boot that. also padsp if you're running an OS with pulse audio. it worked for Sid Meier's alpha centauri, SimCity 3000, and several others which I've managed to get physical copies of. I've also been writing to the LIFLG group about this in an effort to maybe get an updated x64 installer. in the mean time a few methods I've been looking into are. A 32bit kernel and drivers that exist along side the 64bit one which you select at bootup (tricky but doable, I've been experimenting with getting this working). Running Qemu to emulate 32bit support (that's my next experiment). Run a compile based OS such as Gentoo with full 32bit library support and update the installer to point to said libraries.. Running the windows versions of the games in wine (this is a last resort, but it does work, and works well.) I've also written to GOG offering to send them my physical copies if it meant updated linux support but haven't heard back. hopefully this is helpful.- 16 Replies

I recently switched to PoP! os so I'm trying to work out a good interface for gaming on my main rig now but thanks for the compliment toby. it's likely that I will tweak and tinker with this one as well, though I need to get OSS support working before I do anything else.
