  1. This thread marks the beginning of a sizeable "me" project I call "City Love." What I need: I need to get a picture of every vanilla building in SC3000 so they can be recreated in Voxels as a 3D model. This is mostly an "archival" project purely "for fun." I've been messing around with Voxels for a couple of years now and like the variability of the medium. Now that MagicaVoxel will let me display more than one model in a "scene," I can create whole buildings and city layouts in a singular file, like this one: This building started out as a LEGO My Own Creation build I sniped out of Pinterest. I never used it for anything and the post is now gone. But this was my first foray into Scale buildings for Voxels. The model is done up inside of 3 separate matrices that all get rendered in MagicaVoxel's "World Layer." I've been tinkering with this for several months now and was relegated to just bumping out buildings that were either Lego builds or Clipart buildings since those require a bit more work to flesh out at scale. Add to that the lack of interest in Voxel builds of this kind and I was stumped for what this was good for. Then it hit me: I could use this to make 3D models of all the old SimCity buildings as Models in the round. Now I feel there's a reason to put more effort into this.
  2. Well ... I uh, forgot to detail the Fan Deck. Heh ... I will get that done here in a few.
  3. Every building is made up of a number of 80X cubes like this. MagicaVoxel can handle a cube of 128X so, I use either a cube of 80: 16x5 or 60: 12x5. In the case of Wellstone Plaza, I needed 24 of these. I have the white alignment pips in here but as a flat image without anything else going on, still looks good with default shading. However ... It was fiddly work that took an hour to do, but my goodness it looks so dang nice! Next time I will increase the number of colors in my limited palette. I'm going to skip displaying all the buildings in one file and will just export them into some 3D viewer when I want them to stand next to each other. Also, I am going to try getting this printed out at Shapeways. I hope IDS2 doesn't mind me benchmarking these builds on his building.
  4. Thanks! This one is a bit of a pain. Usually, I get an image and do a little magic in Photoshop. Then, I take that Black and White image into PiskelApp and then use my limited palette to colorize what I need. Here, I needed the office stuff and the window shades to show up here. It's not perfect but it's something I will keep refining for situations like this. After all, check out how the Voxel build looks below:
  5. Using the "Mango Smoothy" Finders-colors on the left, I can pick out the portions of the original image and reduce the total number of colors present. This way, as opposed to building a base graphic for the windows and working that until it's palette is limited, is pretty dang intensive but renders roughly the same effect. Ended up with only 28 colors here ... had been shooting for 32. Oh well ...
  6. It's been a year! Well, back to messing about then ... This was created by me after seeing IDS2's gorgeous Wellstone Plaza. I have a TON of optimization to get through for this girl before I can make it into Voxels but I look forward to it. Congrats to them for their build!
  7. Well then! Work on the Lobby/1st Floor is moving ahead. I want to take my time with the rest of the furnishings here before I compile the whole she-bang. See you later Builders!
  8. Blasts! I got busy over the holiday and now it's Fair-week in town. (Lots of work at my job for this week too). Here's a little side project I worked on. I'll have more on the hotel soon enough. Certain "Black Square" buildings have a fetching level of beauty. I'm a Breton-Brut boy in my heart but sometimes, when the glass tinting is just right, these are the loveliest buildings in the city ...
  9. Who likes Bumps-and-Greebles? The Fan deck is my favorite part. Most of it is cubes and pipe-shapes that are all linked together in interesting ways. The original image was using Lego Bricks to achieve a semblance of HVAC equipment and a couple of "Penthouse" regions on the roof but I filled in with some cables and pipes of my own. I don't know if I can get the building to light at night but will look into that too. Now I can get the main floor going and delete my alignment pips. I love sharing this with you guys!
  10. Wellstone Plaza

Would you be willing to post a full turn around of this building? I might have something I need those shots to make ...
  11. Wellstone Plaza

Holy cow. Done up in that striking black facade, this building stopped me from snooping through the omnibus. I don't even remember what I was looking for now. This is a gorgeous office building! I love the night shot you included. It's a very comely shaped building given that it's just an extruded rectangle. You managed to take the boring and make it exceptional! "I tell everyone. I smile just because I got a city love." -John Mayer, Room for Squares
  12. Oh I think I like how this is turning out!
  13. Going to have to add lights at some point. After all, Fan Deck will be solid ceiling for the building. Love looking up here!
  14. Still working on the project I started before the Condos. Here's a look at the generic floors from 2-8 in my Lego MOC Business Motel conversion. Working with a limited palette is hard so, no way through it but straight through. The yellow voxels are alignment pips that will be removed in the final model. More coming in the week.
  15. Sometimes you have to draw the box it came in. Onward!
  16. Alright, so this building full of Condos from SC3k is going to be a bigger job than I expected. Can't use Piskel.AP which is a browser based Pixel Art program I can use on any computer with internet. Trouble is, it gets angry if you try to do work bigger than 360px. So, I am starting that project in Aseprite which can handle some larger form sprite sheets. The Fan-Deck of that building will take me some time to create but getting one side done hastens all other sides. So, to have something to show for tonight, lets take a look at a project I just finished: ... again, 1px-1vox-1foot. This image has been doubled in size to help it all show up but what I have here is another LEGO MOC that I've converted into a scale building of roughly the same shape and size. I was thinking business Hotel with a lovely atrium that goes up to the 8th floor. The Fan Deck is mostly covered entities though I plan to have step paths and conduits going around. Because I could, I also wanted to divvy out the individual floors so I could take pictures out of some of the rooms I will furnish, as well as the interior. Now that this is all finished, I am putting this whole whatsit into MagicaVoxel piece by piece. Ill show that off then. Thanks!
  17. Blasts! I am only about three pages into the Omnibus so I am asking questions already answered elsewhere. Thanks for being patient with my guys. I know how much of a pain that can be.
  18. That is very helpful! I can't wait to get this project going in full! I went out and bought SC3000 again and now have it on GOG. I need to find a way to get into a mode where I can view/edit the buildings so I can get all of them done out.
  19. This solves my problem. Instead of 16 meters, which only ends up being cribbed to 80 feet for simplicity (3 x 16). That means that this starting Condominium I am using, was only 48 wide in it's footprint! Now I know that the Condo is 211 feet by 1055 at it's base. That seems more realistic and now I can crack this out more reliably. Thanks folks! At the stage I am working at, I can change all of this and it helps you guys got me going. Thank you!
  20. Oops. Running into a snag right now. I found in the forums that SC4's tiles are all 16 Meters on a side. Since that's the case, do we know for sure that SC3000's tiles are the same size?
  21. Introduce Yourself Here!

Copy that and downloaded! Thank you for reaching out. I see now I might have to buy SC3000 from GOG but I am ready for that too. I'll pop a thread later today and start work. Thanks guys!
  22. Introduce Yourself Here!

Hey Folks. I'm an old bleeder to the SimCity world and have recently ended up in a lifestyle that gives me time to work with this material again. However, I have a different bent: I make Voxel Buildings. Think Pixel art but in 3D. Turns out I have gotten proper good at this and am scumming my way through Clipart and Isometric buildings to create my stuff. My thoughts turned back to SimCity as I did this, remembering my youth and the hours I dumped into SimCity 2000, 3000 and 4. So, I got me a little project now. Basically, I want to do this: ... with every vanilla Building in SC2000 and 3000. I just want to build them as a start up to larger ambitions. I saw somewhere in here that somebody photographed the SC3000 SKUs on a grid and might have a .ZIP with all of them inside. Would you guys be able to hook me up? Might have to buy SC3000 on GOG and get them from that place instead, if I have to. Not unhappy to do that either. This little "me" project is just called "City Love." When done, I'll give the models up for free. Working at a 1VOX/1Ft. scale. Tell me what you think of that!
